Welcome to Roadworthy! This is a chance to show off a Road Crew Judge and allow them to share their experience and wisdom. We provide these profiles to help provide insight into their personality and style, and maybe give up-and-coming Judges some advice on improving their game. This week we chat with Goodie Award winning Lord of the Ziggurat, Chase Reinhart, about incorporating awesome props into your games of DCC and how to create a sense of discovery and awe in your games. Chase Reinhart is a Road Crew Judge from Portland, Oregon with a knack for building unique terrain. Perhaps his most notable and magnificent creation is a playable Ziggurat built for the Pits of Lost Agharta, used by writer Harley Stroh to showcase the adventure at Gen Con 2021. Yet Chase’s creative efforts don’t stop there, and he has continued to add engaging game elements and props to his growing repertoire of adventures. Chase initially encountered Dungeons & Dragons through video games like the original “Baldur’s Gate.” Video games introduced systems of gaming that he didn’t initially understand, but which posed an interesting challenge to try and figure out. He didn’t get the opportunity to play a live RPG until college, when he found a group that introduced him to D&D 3E and ultimately became lifelong friends. Chase was first introduced to Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) in 2013, when a friend brought the core book to their table. He was drawn to the book’s art, but didn’t go into “turbo mode” with his involvement in the community until 2020, when the pandemic expanded his options for ways to play and host games online for an entirely new group of players. “[Playing online] really inspired me to kind of show up to the online conventions, and just start hosting games,” Chase said. “I think getting over the initial fear of hosting games for total strangers was quickly accomplished just by running into the Goodman Games community, which is generally full of very positive and fun-seeking people.” Chase runs games with a variety of high-prep and low-prep techniques.
