Mission Accomplished

Post by That DM Guy »

I have been wanting to run DCC RPG for years. When the game first came out, I bought three books, one being the black/gold foil cover. I love this game and I am so excited to run a Lankhmar game.

My group, alas, is mostly made up of guys who only play 3.5 or Pathfinder. Half of them have no interest in playing anything but 3.X. It took a year of running Forgotten Realms, which I ran because they're my friends, if a bit whiny at times. I looked them in the eye and said, I am not running 3.5 again. I am not a fan of this system and I have made this very clear for years. They let someone else run and we still had fun, but finally they wanted one my games again (probably says something about my DMing, but that's not my point).

The first game I got out of their comfort zone was the new Star Wars game: Edge of the Empire. The love Star Wars and the art was enough to really pull them out of it. A while late, we want to go back to medieval fantasy. 3.5 hits the table and everyone makes characters.

I smile at them and told them to put those books away and put the DCC RPG on the table.

"This game, again? I don't want to make characters just for them to die."

"Then don't be stupid."

A bit harsh, but it got a laugh from the group. The host of our game my best bud basically saying "If you don't like what he's running, there's the door. He's prepared a game, so that's what we're playing."

The group came out with six or seven level 1 characters, everyone laughing and just loving this game.

I come back the next week and everyone looking at me, with hope in their voices: "Can we play DCC RPG again?"

This is a group that still talks about R.A. Salvatore Forgotten Realms novels and Drizzt to this day (mind you, the biggest fan is all about Bruenor and Many Arrows). Only two have picked up any novels that are inspirations to the system.

I'm looking forward to further games and more magical mishaps.

Awesome.

I need to take another stab at making this same thing happen with my friends/group. 8)
