"Bessie's bonnet!" The shadowy silhoutte snorts. "Lost in the woods, where the big devil musta found it. Go home, I says! There be demons prowling round these parts at nights."

"We got us a problem, Jeb?" Another figure comes out of the forest to the right. It appears to be a wildly unkempt man with a bushy full beard, dressed in ragged tatters and carrying a club.

"No siree," says the first figure casually. "Just splaining to these beetles and folks why they gonna go back home now."

Does Robin, the outlaw, recognize them, or possibly know about bandits inthe area?

Milo calls out "Guys, we have some tomatoes, if you're hungry. Just let us go on, and we'll be out of your hair in a minute." He walks over to the tomato cart and holds one up in the torchlight.

Bill, the halfling, will start moving away from the men, back up the road. His goal is to get far enough from the torches to be able to use his infravision to see if there are more men in the darkness. While looking like he's complying.

Randow Lammerson is about to object to Milo (a ditch digger!) offering up his tomatoes to these unruly fellows but thinks better of it. Instead, he checks to make sure the club he stashed alongside his tomatoes is still there and easily in reach.

Abram Cove casually reaches over and takes a rock from the pushcart of rocks. Just in case things turn nasty.

Rogett Lammerson is about to object to Abram (a beggar!) snatching up one of his prized rocks but thinks better of it. Instead, he checks to make sure the club he stashed alongside his rocks is still there and easily in reach.

Badr Balik strides boldly forward. "I am afraid we cannot be delayed. There may be trouble at the Curwen farm and if we must brave demons of the night then we must. Plus, I am an astrologer and accustomed to traveling the night to witness the movement of the constellations. The night holds no terrors for me."

Travelers disappear from time to time, of course, but Robin doesn't know about any bandits per se. Nor does he recognize these men...perhaps because they stick to the shadows, but their voices are not familiar either.
Bill, the halfling, will start moving away from the men, back up the road. His goal is to get far enough from the torches to be able to use his infravision to see if there are more men in the darkness. While looking like he's complying.
Another stands quietly on the other side of the trail. From the heat signatures, they are probably human...at least, they seem to be alive.

"No terrors, says he. No terrors!" The ragged man steps forward (and now Robin is certain that he's never seen the man before), holding a club threateningly. "Night should hold terrors for ye, my little man. Oh, really it should...."

Actions and initiative please. Be aware that only Bill knows about the third opponent at this time.

Reminder for first-time DCCers: Roll 1d20 for initiative, adding the highest init mod of your group; all of your four characters act at the same time

Badr Balik is shocked by the mockery and malice of the man and stops dead in his tracks (hopefully not literally). The only thing he can think to do is hold the torch between them like a shield.

Abram Cove wonders what place fosters such naivety in such a world as this and is worried that these men aren't put off by the crowd facing them. "Lammerson, take this." He hands his torch off to Rogett Lammerson who accepts it and glances again at his stashed club. Abram pulls his sling from where is was secreted inside his shirt and casually loads his rock into it. Just in case things turn nasty and he's fairly sure that they will.

Randow Lammerson plucks his club from amongst his tomatoes and points it at one of the two men. "We're warning you! Take your scrubby self back to whatever hole you crawled out of and get out of our way!"

None of the men plan on attacking first but if fighting breaks out then they will act in their defense.

OOC: I've added a bunch of rolls but I don't know how you want to handle rolling attacks and such.
Rolls:
Initiative (1d20=6)
Badr torch (1d20=8) (probably a miss)
Abram sling (1d20-1=15), Dmg (1d4+2=5)
Randow club (1d20=14), Dmg (1d4=4)

I tend to use Rolz.org for online games because it is convenient and can do any type of die. But you do whatever you like. The honour system is in force here - cheating just hurts the cheater.

Init: 1+2=3

Bill tries to circle around outside the torchlight, keeping low, trying to get behind the man hidden in darkness. If fighting breaks out, he'll shout a warning. And attack the hidden man. Hand axe: 1d20=5, 1d6+1=5

Milo puts a hand on his sword, prepared to fight the man with the club if things turn violent. Short sword 1d20=17, 1d6+2=4

Milo realizes "Wait! What do you mean, Bessie's bonnet was lost in the woods? Where's Bessie??" If fighting breaks out, shovel 1d20=2, 1d4=4

Godwin is out of his element, and weak. He will fend off attackers, if needed, with his staff: 1d20-1=4-1=3, 1d4-1=3-1=2.

Thulan, pointing toward the shadowy figures in the gloomy twilight, "these guys are either nuts or hiding something evil."

"Yep, I agree with you", Pratel says while while tapping his crude club against the side of his leg.

Zorathus, eats a piece of his home made cheese and watches the event come to play.

"I do not like this fellows one bit." Balin backs away a bit and readies himself should things get ugly.

All four stand their ground and wait. For if these shadowy fools are going to charge them they will be ready to counter attack.

Int Roll...7+1=8

The three roll a 16 +0 = 16 for initiative. They target those who have been spokesmen so far: Randow, Badr, and Balin are the unfortunate targets.

Or fortunate! Against Randow a 4 (+0), cleanly missing.
Against Badr a 9. A near miss!
Against Balin a 15. Less fortunate. 1d4 damage: a mere 1 point of damage! Very lucky.

At 8....hmmm.....no rolls, no specific actions.
At 6.....Abraham takes one out with a sling. Randow takes out another with his club.
At 3......Is Milo using a sword or a club? Either way, the last ragged man falls.

Save for the sound of the whippoorwills, the wood seems silent again.

Oops, sorry... the "Milo" with a sword was supposed to be Robin with his short sword. He searches the body of his guy.

Apart from some ragged items of clothing, and stout wooden clubs, these fellows had nothing on them. They do seem a bit long in the face, and a bit pale, but none of you recognize any of them, not even up close with the torches nearly singeing their flea-ridden beards.

They do not become any more dead, nor do they produce anything other than what has been described.

Everyone may have 1 XP.

Badr Balik's mouth opens and closes soundlessly giving him an appearance much like a fish. The violence that surged around him and then was as quickly finished leaves him stunned as the others try to identify the men and search the bodies. Finally he recovers. "Onward, men."

Abram Cove isn't disappointed in his desire for booty. Oh, certainly, it is just a stout club but it is a club that he didn't have before. Now if something rushes up on him he has a bit more than just a strip of leather and a rock to defend himself. He smiles as he tucks a club into his belt. He waits for the Lammerson's then follows after Badr.

"You opened yer big mouth and called down misfortune on yerself," hisses Rogett Lammerson. "You was just lucky you weren't brained."

Randow Lammerson opens his mouth to object then snaps it closed, glares at his brother, then pushes his cart on after Badr.

Taking more time than the others in the group, mostly because of the herbalist stopping to check on herbs along the path.

"I'm certain I saw... what was it again? I think I've forgotten..."

The armsman sighs when hw sees the bodies on the ground. "I take it we missed the fun? How far to this Curwin girl's farmstead? And who were these unfortunates?"

Milo shakes his head "I wouldn't call that fun... Those men could have killed somebody! Let's get to the farm before we meet someone else."

Godwin, Milo and Robin fall in with the others, ready to press on. Bill looks around the area to see if he can tell where the men might have come from... Is there any sign of a camp nearby, or a path they might have takenfrom their house or anything like that?

Seeing that the vile men have been 'stopped', Pratel, Zorathus, Thulan and Balin will continue toward the Curwen's place. "Come on guys", Balin pipes up, "these men here, pointing at the three corpses on the ground, "are a sign that the Curwens are in harms way or might be up to no good themselves. Whatever the truth be we need to find it now and standing around here will not do it for us."

When you finally reach the yard before the house, you can hear pigs squealing somewhere in the dark to your left. Closer to you, you can see two smaller buildings – an abattoir and a smokehouse, most likely. Directly before you is a well with a heavy winch; beyond it the Curwen Homestead – a large house shaped like an L, heavily shuttered and mostly dark, although you can see candlelight through the seams of a few shuttered windows on the upper floor.

Before heading over to the Curwen home Pratel, Zorathus, Thulan and Balin will inspect the smoke house. Looking over their shoulders at the other villagers, Pratel whispers to them. "We are headed over there", pointing at the smoke house,"and I suggest a few of you look down that well and some of you head over to that other small building. We should be on high alert and make sure all the surrounding structures are safe before venturing to the farm house."
