"...Eliza..."

Darren fell to the cold steel floor, holding his abdomen. He had never been shot before and the pain, the terrible pain, was immense. He tried to fight off the blackness that threatened to consume him but he failed miserably. The darkness rushed up to greet him and Darren fell away into the nothingness of the unconscious.

~~

Valiant nodded as the captain gave his orders, drawing out his twin Siam magnums. He headed to the med-lift and took it up to medical, waiting to see what lay before them.

~~

Minerva jumped at the sound of the gunshot and drew out her automatic pistol instinctively. She looked at the captain and he told her to remain here. She nodded but kept her gun out, looking at Lincoln for some sort of explaination.

"This something planned or are we supposed to be surprised?"

Jesse leap-frogged into her chair and started hitting controls. She went over the scanners, her eyes going wide. She grabbed the comm, "Cap, if you can hear me, we've got incoming, two vessels, uh, armed, they look like boarding craft."

* * *

Lincoln stood up, hearing the announcement over the comm, "Highwaymen." He said to Minerva.''

* * *

Gabe heard the announcement but didn't say anything. He descended the stairs down into the cargo bay. "Eddie?" He called out.

Attack: 12

A bullet spanged off the bulkhead above Gabe's head and he ducked low. Eddie ducked behind the cover of the crates.

"The hell are you doing, Eddie!?" Gabe asked, he put himself against the wall, hefting his big gun, "The hell's your game?!"

Eddie's response was to fire again, a single round that ricocheted off the wall Gabe was hiding behind.

"A bigger bunk for starters!" Eddie growled.

Gabe stuck his Oroburos around the wall and fired.
Attack: 16

The bullet struck the metal crates Eddie was hiding behind.

"WOAH!" Eddie cried, "Woah! Easy there, Gabe, you wanna blow out your ship's underbelly? Remember what we're carting here! You just got this ship! You stay put, you hand over the goods, and ah, Jesse, too, and we'll go on our merry."

"You have no idea the terrible things I have in store for you, you backstabbing sykin syn!" Gabe snarled.

Valiant moved quietly through the cargo bay as he came off of the med lift. He looked about and saw that the captain was firing the largest handgun he had ever seen at Eddie, who was ducking behind some crates.

MacGruder's crates.

Valiant crept along the catwalks that were overhead, trying to remain silent.

(Agility Roll: 12)

As he came just above Eddie, he lowered one of his magnums, took aim at Eddie, and fired off a single round.

Val's bullet whizzed past Eddie, who would have taken it full in the chest had he been standing. He glanced up at Val, starting to panic.

"You call off your old dog, Gabe! Call him off!" Eddie cried.
Attack: 16

Eddie fired back at Val, but the bullet imbedded itself in the steel gridwork of the catwalk.

"You give me the crates and Jesse, and no one has to die!" Eddie said.

Gabe shook his head, "No, I'm fairly certain someone, namely you, is going to die."

"You can't win, right now those ships outside are coming to dock, they're loaded with men!"

"Jesse's flyin' circles around them." Gabe said.

"Kao! These guys are flying circles around us..." Jesse said.

Valiant put one of his Siams away and looked down at the cowering Eddie. He then threw himself over the railing and tried to come down on the bastard's head, a pair of black boots leading the way.

[OOC: Val's initiative, for one, and if you're looking for an attack roll, I'd say Unarmed for dropping down on someone's arse. And a fifteen-foot fall is 1d8 damage on Val, but you gain a nice fat +5 damage bonus.]

Eddie takes both feet in the chest and its slammed hard into the deck. There's a very deep crack in his chest, and his eyes go wide. He manages to suck in enough air to keep his lungs from collapsing as Val gets off him and lies still, gasping like a fish out of water.

Gabe stepped out from behind the stairwell. "He dead? Don't kill him, if'n he isn't."

He fumbled his way to the comm controls, "Jesse, you there?" He frowned as nothing happened, "Val, did you hit the lights?"

* * *

Jesse fumbled with a few switches. "I can't get this bird swinging again..."

* * *

Boarder Move Check: 10

With Redemption crippled, the Boarder swung low underneath and easily grappled to its underside, attaching its boarding umbilicus to the belly airlock.

* * *

The raider circled, waiting for any sudden movements from their target.

* * *

Gabe frowned, "Get behind cover, Val. Company's comin'." He pushed himself back up the flight of stairs to kneel at the top, waiting.

Valiant landed in a tumble with the traitor and fell the bone give way in a sickening crunch. He pulled himself up quickly, his magnum pointed at Eddie's head. He kicked Eddie's six-gun away from him and delivered a quick punch to Eddie's face, to knock him before the raiders arrived.

Attack: 16
Damage (non lethal): 15

Valiant moved quickly, pulling the unconscious doctor behind some of the crates, to get him away from the line of fire. He then ducked behind some of the crates himself, unslung his submachine run, and waited.

"Got some good cover, sir, and the doctor is stowed. Looks like these bastards mean business."

His ribs cracked and stunned, Eddie merely lay flat, wheezing and groaning.

"Damnit." Gabe muttered. He turned to the stairwell upstairs, "Minerva, if you can hear me, you gotta get the power back on!"

He pointed his gun at the general location of the belly airlock and waited.

A heavy clank came from below, reverberating through cargo bay. Gabe winced, hoping they wouldn't use cutters - but no, blessedly he saw the airlock lights come on. They'd attached a one-time generator and simply overrode the locks. He waited patiently, anxiously, as the airlock hatch slid open.

A trio of objects, just barely visible in the tiny lights of the airlock, tumbled into the room. Gabe didn't see what they were, but suddenly all three burst and a billowing cloud of gas began to fill the cargo bay.

* * *

"Go!" Shouted the raider.

Amidst the gas, the attackers entered the cargobay, weapons leading, gas-masks tight. They scanned the area but moved directly to the crates Eddie had apparently marked for tracking.

[OOC: New combat, I'll roll everyone's initiative]

Gabe: 14
Badguys: 2 (ouch)
Val: 6
[OOC: Sorry Chris, heh...]

Badguys: 5
Str d12
Agl d12+1
End d10
Per d12+1
Cha d10
HP 20
AC 15
Tag Small Guns +5, Big Guns +5, Unarmed +5

Important! Everyone takes a -2 to Perception rolls because of the darkness and gas. The gas has fillied the lower areas of the cargo bay - everyone down there should make a DC 10 Endurance check or start coughing uncontrollably and lose -2 to their Agility rolls. Every round you can make another check, but if you succeed you don't have to make another for the rest of combat.

Eddie's Endure Gas roll: 2

Due to his injuries, Eddie can't fight off the choking effects of the gas and he starts coughing uncontrollably, wracking his body with intense pain AND taking 5 points of non-lethal damage. He faints from the pain.

* * *

Gabe aimed over the railing and fired down at the men stepping out of the airlock. He counted 5, and aimed for the biggest target, the one who had stepped first out of the airlock.
Attack: 16
Damage: 15

The bullet catches the big man in the midsection, slamming him against the crates. Blood seeps from his light armor.

Valiant's Endurance Check: 11

Valiant coughed slightly on the gas and had to wince through the darkness to track down a target to put a bullet in. He found one, just slightly off to his right.

He brought up his submachine gun and let loose into the nearest raider with a burst.

Valiant's Attack: 17
Valiant's Damage: 20

The raider's body was riddled with holes, blood splattering the back wall in a myriad of almost artistic design. He fell to the ground, his eyes dead before he hit the steel deck. Valiant grinned grimly and readied himself against the crates for the first firefight of his career as the Redemption's ship security.

~~

Minerva watched as the power died away and the emergency lights kicked on, bathing her pale face in a shade of red. She wouldn't have needed the light to be redfaced through for her ship had just been messed with: rage, frustration, and anger boiled its way to the surface and she cursed under her breath.

She stood up and looked over at Lincoln and hesistated.

"Look, I'm going to need you in the engine room with me. Keep your gorramn hands to yourself while we are down there and just help me. If we don't get power back, we're dead. You got that?"

Minerva didn't wait for an answer and headed down to the engine room.

She grabbed her tools from the nearby shelf and peeled a few of the plastic shell panels off of the engine. She then dove into her work, trying to get the engine and main power on again.

Lincoln shook his head, "My hands go where they're needed." He said, walking around to the other side of the engine, "We can't just adjust some bolts and hope the power comes back, you know that. You reinitialize the engine, and I'll give it the paddles."

He dug into Minerva's bag and pulled out a pair of electronic devices that he stuck against the engine.

"Okay, ready?" He asked her, "One, two, three, clear!"

Team Repair Check: 44

Lincoln zapped the engines as Minerva restarted them, and Redemption's lights came to life. The engine started to spin healthily.

"It's alive! Ah-li-hi-hi-hive!" Lincoln laughed.

* * *

"sh*t, power's back!" One of the raiders (Badguy 3) shouted, "Get the goods, I'll cover!"

He aimed his shotgun in Val's direction and pulled the trigger.

Attack: 17

The shotgun boomed but Val was already behind cover, the pellets plinked off the wall behind him.

The two other Raiders (Badguys 4 and 5) grabbed the first crate they could and dragged it for the airlock, disappearing into it with the crate.

* * *

Jesse saw the power come on. "Minerva you lovely-" She grabbed the controls and punched them, going for full burn. The ship started to shake as the boarding craft fought with them.

Redemption Move Check: 18 [OOC:Woo-hoo!]

Redemption dove and darted left and right, shaking the boarder.

* * *

Boarder Move Check: 10

Whoever was flying the boarding craft kicked on his engines, and suddenly the two thrusters were throwing both ships into a dangerous spin.

* * *

Raider Move Check: 5

Wary about firing and hitting the boarding craft, the Raider gave uncertain pursuit, keeping its distance from the spinning ships.

* * *

Gabe saw the lights come on and he grinned fiercly, "Atta girl." He said, and fired at the first badguy who was pushing to his feet.
Attack: 20
Damage: 8

The bullet caught the raider in the throat, and put him down. He slumped over and fell into the airlock, tumbling into the umbilicus with the two other badguys who had stolen the crate.

Minerva watched Lincoln with appreciation as the engine fired to life and she joined in his cry of triumph.

"It lives! It liiiiiiiiiiiveeeessssss!"

She threw her arms around Lincoln and kissed his ruddy cheek.

"Nice work, Studly."

~~

Valiant pulled his head low as the shotgun went off and the pellets sprayed the wall above him. Flakes of metal showered down on the ex-soldier as he brought his submachine gun up and fired into the last departing raider with a burst of gunfire.

Lincoln took the kiss and his eyes went wide. He blinked dumbly.

* * *

The raider took the burst in the back as he was ducking into the airlock, and slumped in, another corpse falling into the umbilicus.

* * *

"Close it!" Gabe shouted, leaping from the stairwell. He grabbed the control panel and slapped the safety controls, sealing the airlock even as the Boarding craft disengaged its umbilicus and air began to seep through the cracks. The airlock closed without so much as a gasp leaving the ship.

* * *

The boarder hit its thrusters and broke away from Redemption, spiralling backward.

Jesse watched, grimly, as the Raider swooped it, its EMP guns ready for another blast. Then it and the Boarder both broke away, going for full burn. Their engines glowing brightly as an explosion of propulsion launched them into the void.

A shadow fell over Redemption, and Jesse glanced up at it, even as the comm board began blinking.

* * *

The gas dispersed into the air recyclers. Gabe sighed as the airlock closed. "How's the doc, Val?"

Valiant watched Gabriel move into action and seal the airlock. The captain moved like an old warrior, graceful and calculating all at the same time. He reminded Valiant of many of the officers in the Alliance his age, who had grown disillusioned with the way the 'Verse was being run by those they had been fighting for.

Yet, Gabriel had fought for the Independance. He was no veteran who had once been a loyal Alliance soldier.

No, he was the enemy...or he had been.

A dark shadow fell over Valiant's eyes as he nodded to the captain and began to look over the doctor.

Valiant had seen enough bullet wounds in his days and he knew that the doctor would survive to gripe another day.

He put some pressure on the wound and tore off the young doctor's suit sleeve. He tied it tightly around Darren's abdomen and this helped to stop the flow of blood.

Darren opened his eyes weakly and saw Valiant hovering over him. "...You going to shoot me too? It seems to be one of those days were everyone wants to get a swing in on anyone who even looked respectable..." His voice trailed off as he fell back into unconsciousness.

Valiant only chuckled as he lifted the doctor up and began to carry him towards the medical bay.

"He'll be okay, sir. Best get him up to medical. I'll met you on the bridge." Valiant clammered into the med-lift and rode it up to the medical bay.

~~
Minerva only gave Lincoln another look of "Don't expect that to happen again!" and went about her work, to get the Redemption back into tip-top shape.

Gabe watched Val wander off then cracked open the cylinder of his handgun and let the empty shells fall to the ground. He poked fresh rounds into the chambers methodically, watching the single dead raider lying dead on his deck, Eddie unconscious on the floor, and a missing crate of MacGruder's goods.

"Cap?" Jesse called from the comm.

Gabe walked to the comm beside the airlock controls and took the radio. "Yeah, Jess. We're clear. Where did the ships go?"

"Gabe, we've got another ship coming in." Jesse said, her voice was uncertain, nervous. "It... It's Alliance, sir. Deep range cruiser Magellan."

Gabe felt the chill in his spine.

* * *

Dwarfing Redemption the way a trio of buildings dwarf a car, the Magellan floated ominously towards the small freighter, the Alliance craft was lined with weapons and green light, swallowing Redemption in its massive shadow...
