Patrons are powerful beings with arcane power and knowledge who enter into bargains with wizards and sorcerers in order to further their agenda. Gods , demons, elementals, archmages, necromancer kings any powerful being can do it provided they know the currect arcane secrets.

Gods also empower their faithfull worshippers but instead of some type of bargain, they demand total devotion and submission.

In my mythic Northumbrian campaign, the only supernatural entities that are just gods are the saints and angels of mythical Church. Every other big supernatural entity is either dual purpose -- both a god and a patron -- or, if it's a lesser entity, then it's just a patron. So St Oswald is just a "god." Hyperion, the Atlantean god of civilization; Coax, the god of storms and frogs; Morriga, the immortal eater-of-the-dead; and the Jötunn, the frost giants, are all both gods and patrons. Marcus Tertius, the ghost of a long dead Roman lawyer, is just a patron.

One of the players recently started a new character and decided to be a cleric follower of Freya. I think Freya might also act as a patron if any of the players wants to seek out that opportunity.

Gods are like super-patrons.

Patrons are like under-gods.

Well, some Patrons are like Gods but without the normal accompanying low self esteem and need to be worshiped by lesser beings.

The difference is in the eye of the worshiper.
