Non Thieves being sneaky and determining surprise..

I'm new to the game and am wondering how the more experienced Judges handle these things. If a warrior (or any non thief character) wants to sneak by a guard or hide to get the extra attack from a surprise round ect, how do you resolve this? I'm thinking an untrained skill check? d10 plus agility mod? Would you set a difficulty or contest it with the guard some how?

Thanks in advance!

I would use an untrained skill check (d10) unless the Occupation feeds into that (Hunter, for example, and you're in a woods or wherever the Hunter hunted when the Hunter hunted), in which case a d20. to go further, if the Hunter is not in their usual hunting environment, I'd still consider them good at sneaking, and may still give them a d20 for the check, or may step that down the Chain, if the environment and situation suggested that was appropriate (maybe a d16 or d14).

I'd set a DC, based on the standard guidance in the book.

Same here. It's a simple and sensible rule.
