Staff (weapon) stats

One of my players pointed out the incongruity of the "staff" in the Weapons table. I presume "staff" is a typical "bo" or "quarterstaff" which are at least 6' long. The table does not indicate this is a two-handed weapon, but in my experience most staffs are only effective (as a weapon, not as a leaning stick) when used two-handed. In that case, the damage (1d4) doesn't really fit: it's the same as a club which is typically a one-handed weapon. Most weapons seem more-or-less consistent with D&D except the staff seems to have been downgraded. Does anyone else see this as inconsistent? Or is the staff just a wizard's version of a club and really intended for walking? :D

I always assumed it was a walking staff.

Heh, yeah, I never really considered that. Must be overthinking it.
