The Shroomdog! A new DCC Monster I want to share!

Shroomdogs

The most loyal companions of the Gnomes, Shroomen and Psishroomers, these curious and loyal beasts are a boon in the Underworld.

They are highly intelligent and easy to train. Their Psionic potential is very poor, but they are sprouted for one single use. To help hunt the enemies of the Gnomes and their allies.

The Shroomdog though small in stature packs quite a punch. It has no mouth but it can Psibite targets as hard as any flesh and blood beast, it is quite fast and once it Psibites its psychic “jaws” instantly lock down any attempt to either cast spells or use Psionics.

Shroomen, Gnomes , Psishroomers and the Cities of the Underworld sprout these little affectionate beasts both as pets and protection.

They were a gift of Alco-Trapiome (A great Fungi God) to one of the Elder Gnomes of the Underworld and after that they have begun to breed true, though the secrets of how to do so are known to a few. They are rarely sold. They have an average lifespan of 20 years and only need water and rotten organic matter to sleep on, feed and heal, they produce almost no waste and sprout spores when happy or excited. They can only be heard by their handlers or those they have psibitten during combat, being utterly quiet and silent for all other purposes.

Since they were bred to hunt Psionic Monsters they alert psychically their owners if they detect them nearby with their keen sense of Psismell, also if anyone is approaching using Teleportation or similar Teleportive Psionic Abilities into the vicinity.

Init +3; Atk Psibite +2 melee (1d4+Psychic Lockdown); AC 12; HD 1d6 (4hps); MV 30’ ; Act 1d20; SP Psychic Lockdown ,Rage, Psismell ; SV Fort 3, Ref +2, Will +2; AL N.

Psismell: Shroomdogs can “Psismell” casters (magical and divine) , psionicists or psychically active creatures and target them always over others unless directed by their Handler to do differently.

They are extremely efficient at hunting down other beings as well due to this ability, they are naturally blind , having no eyes, but can sense all living beings. Undead are practically invisible to them and attack them at the standard penalty, in short: for non casters they are treated as simple critters doing 1d4 points of damage with their Psibite.

Psychic Lockdown: Its single special psychic ability is their Psibite generating a Psychic Lockdown and honestly it does not need anything more. Once a target has been “bitten” the only way to remove the Shroomdog from any arm, leg or appendage it has clamped down is to kill it.

As long as the attack connects the Shroomdog literally merges its own Psychic field with that of its target, completely nullifying and locking down the target as the little thing shivers, quakes, yips and barks psychically, disrupting the connection to the flow of magic and mental energies, generating automatically every round 1d4 damage until they are killed or the target dies.

This special mechanic only works on beings capable of using Psionics or Magic as the Shroomdog is literally attached to the Aura of any living being capable of conducting any kind of Magic or Psionic Power.

This does not work on beings unable to cast spells, psionics or that are not alive (unless it has psychic potential).

On anyone not having these characteristics this ability will never trigger.

If the affected creature is too big, calculate this in the most simple way: To Lock Down any beings with more than 2hd or Levels, it needs to have 1 Shroomdog on it for every 2hd of the Monster or 1 class level whichever is better- Ex: To lock down a Level 1 wizard it only needs to have one Shroomdog on it, to lock down a Very young Dragon of 10HD it would need to have 5 Shroomdogs on it, a Spell Using Monster with 20HD would need to have 10 Shroomdogs on it to actually Lock it Down and bar it from using magic.

Rage: One of their key traits is a deep affection for their handlers, and if the handler is killed or downed in combat the Shroomdogs go into a special rage mode, attacking to the death and on any damage they do their d4 damage dice explodes! (meaning that for every result of 4 points of damage on the d4 dice, they get to roll a second, and if that one rolls also a 4 they add another d4 until the dice no longer shows a 4).
