How many adventures per level?

Post by uriel222 »

Roughly how many adventure modules can players expect to go through per level? That is, if I were planning a campaign from 0 to 10th level, how many adventures at each level should I prepare? The players have been through Sailors of the Sunless Sea and are now 1st level (I didn't both with XP during the funnel; 1st level just went automatically to the survivors). Will one 1st level adventure take them to 2nd, or if not, how many? Is it the same all the way up, or does it take more or less adventures to go from 9th to 10th than 1st to 2nd? None of the game stores where I live seem to regularly carry DCC RPG stuff, so I'm ordering it by mail, but with delivery times it can take up to a month to get here, so I need to plan in advance.

Thanks!

If the average encounter per adventure is 2 XP, and the average adventure has 14 encounters which the PCs engage in/get XP for, then you can assume

1 adventure (28 XP vs 10 XP needed) = level 1.
2 adventures (56 XP vs 50 XP needed) = level 2.
4 adventures (112 XP vs 110 XP needed) = level 3.
7 adventures (196 XP vs 190 XP needed) = level 4.
11 adventures (308 XP vs 290 XP needed) = level 5.
15 adventures (420 XP vs 410 XP needed) = level 6.
20 adventures (560 XP vs 550 XP needed) = level 7.
26 adventures (728 vs 710 XP needed) = level 8.
32 adventures (896 vs 890 XP needed) = level 9.
39 adventures (1092 vs 1090 XP needed) = level 10.

The foregoing assumes, though, an average rate of XP per adventure, which may not be the case, and does not take setbacks such as character death or XP-draining un-dead into account. Adjusting XP given will produce faster or slower rates of advancement. Shorter adventures may not count for a full adventure using the foregoing formula. Your Mileage May Vary.

Thanks!

So, you're saying one adventure takes you from 0th to 1st, two adventures from 1st to 2nd, four from 2nd to 3rd, etc., correct? Give or take?

The # of adventures is the total, so after the character has been in 4 adventures he is level 3, assuming he got 28 XP per adventure.

Ah! That does make more sense at the higher levels, I suppose. 39 adventures to get from 9 to 10 did seem high... :)

Well, take that information with a huge grain of salt, because not all adventures are equal.

No, I get that, but I just wanted to have a general idea. Thanks very much.

Hey Raven... That is a great breakdown.

Since there is no campaign series (that I know of) that runs from level to level, I wonder if anyone has any suggestions or would like to share what modules they have run in sequence to great effect?

Starting at a funnel and then a level one to get a campaign going is easy enough, but then, after the shared world has started to be created, it gets a little harder to shoe-horn published modules into the players world. Not impossible... just more work.

Any ideas to make this more seamless?

assuming they live. I'm running my 3rd level 0 funnel. No characters have survived long enough to reach 1st level.
1st was from the rulebook, 2nd is starless sea, #67. Now I'm running people of the pit, #68.

This is very preliminary, but I ran a few funnels for my group to get them a pool of PCs that make it to level one, then they can choose which 1-2 PCs they want to run in future adventures. This is the order I ran them:

Level 0 Funnels
Sailors on a Starless Sea
Portal Under the Stars
Perils of the Sunken City
The Imperishable Sorceress

I am just now getting ready to run a level one adventure.
I am debating between People of the Pit and Frozen in Time...both look great, and I will probably run them back to back to get people leveled up to 2. I have Bone Hoard of the Dancing Horror on deck after that, from Purple Duck games.

Unless something changes, I will then run The Emerald Enchanter, and Fate's Fell Hand after that. Beyond that, I haven't decided. But between stuff from Goodman Games, Purple Sorcerer, Purple Duck, Brave Halfling, Thick Skull and other publishers...I have plenty to choose from!
