Goodman Games

So, I was down at Black and Read here in Denver the other day. (They have a large selection of OOP D&D books.) I found a copy of the Mentzer Basic books, no box, just the books. I just had to pick them up. $20 well spent, I think.

So, now I am here enjoying the Elmore and Easley artwork. It has me jonesing for the Free RPG Day goodness and more playtesting.

I never played Mentzer Basic "in the day" but I have copies of it now and I agree that it's a very well written edition. Not only does the artwork look great but the text is pretty tight overall and not too wordy. A great example of how a good RPG should be written to introduce a gamer to the hobby!

Black & Read is a great store to get lost in. I can't go there without spending at least 3-4 hours scouring the rpg and fantasy book sections.

Ah good! Still my favoured version of D&D, and favoured tool to introduce newbies to rgps.
$20 seems a bit high as a price, though. I have seen a lot running from $3 to $5. (and I bought a set including the box here in the UK for £1.)

I agree...wonderful stuff.

We've actually started up a B/X campaign to fill in the gap before the DCC RPG is released. We haven't had to much time to play unfortunately, but those few sessions that we HAVE run have been loads of fun.

It's my favorite edition of D&D. (Well...AD&D is a very close second)

I'm also a big fan of Black and Read as well. And I'm stoked to hear that you can still find those books out in the wild on occasion.

As one of the players in that B/X adventure let me chime in to say it definitely has been fun so far. We're about to spend our first night out in the wilderness this Sunday though, we'll see if any of our redshirted henchmen don't make it through the night.

Funny thing is, I'm using my old beat up copies of the Mentzer books but am jealous of mntjeff's Moldvay/Cook B/X books that contain a bunch of Erol Otus and others artwork.

I do need to check out the Black and Read, I've heard good things about it but haven't stopped by yet.
