Standard check?

Okay from what i get so far if the GM asks for a standard check to .. let's say resist some torture the player would roll his dice rank for endurance plus his dice for a specialty in pain plus his rank for the torture mastery.

This could be anything between a d4 and something like 3d12 (or even higher?)
So how is the difficulty for such a task set? What would be an average difficulty?

If the torture were inflicted by some sort of machine, then the victim would roll Endurance against the "static" opposition difficultly guidelines. The levels of static opposition are as follows:

Easy 1D4
Moderate 2D4
Difficult 2D6
Demanding 2D8
Formidable 2D10
Extreme 2D12

The GM may determine that the difficulty is such that target numbers are in order, but could in so doing make success impossible to some or all characters. Target numbers could go in order of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.

If the torture is inflicted by another sentient being, then it may involve an ability-dice-chain such as

Coercion (basic) > Interrogation (specialization) > Torture (mastery)

opposed by a roll of Endurance > Pain > torture

If the GM wishes to make it more than an opposed roll, more of a race against time, he can call for a temporary hitpoint pool that the opponent must knock down. For example,

The one with Endurance > Pain > Torture may have an Ability-Dice Chain of D6 (basic) > D8 (specialization) > D6 (mastery), creating a hitpoint pool of 20 (the max value of each die-rank).

Now each roll of the enemy's Coercion (basic) > Interrogation (specialization) > Torture (mastery) becomes a Potential-Harm attempt. Say, the torturer has coercion D12 > Interrogation D6 > Torture D4, and he rolls all three dice, getting a total of 14. He would then subtract 14 points from his victims temporary endurance pool, and once exceeding that score, gets all the info he needs.

Or the GM may just use the victims Resiliance Defense Pool instead.

There are many ways to approach it. ;-)
