Re: Designer’s Blog #4: Adventuring in DCC RPG

May have already been mentioned but does anyone remember Dragon Mountain for 2e? There was some great advice / setup for keeping kobolds relevant at higher levels than usual. Ah yes, that was a killer dungeon. I had different groups run through it, and every time it ended in a TPK at the claws of k...

Wasn't that more a "simple" dinosaur than a dragon?
Definitely. A not very intelligent, dinosaur-like beast, which Conan kills by using the poison of the Apple of Derketo, not feats of arms!

Good, I am glad there will be at least some monsters, if for no other reason than to calibrate the difficulty of challenges.

Very nice!
So, there won't be a bestiary in the book? Or as a separate book?

Re: Adventure! What kind will you run for DCC?

Hyborian Age all the way! A pretty good choice as well! :D I know that there are a whole bunch of Appendix N books out there, but Conan and Lankhmar always had the right "feel" for the literature. (Tolkien does as well, but it's a totally different feel.) I'd love a blend of the savage as...

Re: Welcome New DCC RPG Fans

This is true of most games, which is probably why Joesph was so interested in making the DCC RPG a self-contained and complete product from the onset. That's why I am following it. I don't really need another D&D clone, but a fantasy game with new elements and based on a familiar system is defi...

Re: Welcome New DCC RPG Fans

And recently Mike Mearls stated that having "everything core for 4e was a bad idea." It's difficult to learn from the past, it seems. Good thing they fixed that. Now everything is just Essential.  true. Speaking of which...if you buy the two "Heroes of " books, more t...

Brilliant! Just having a steady flow of modules ready makes me want to buy the DCC RPG! It will be nice to have a good rpg, in print, for which new material is available!

Re: Welcome New DCC RPG Fans

Then they wanted to try something different and more complex, so I introduced them to D&D 3e (3.0) and with only the core books (does this make me an A-hole?), we still had a very nice experience. Many players forget (or don't read) what's also written in the 3.0 DMG: the DM decides what goes i...

Re: Welcome New DCC RPG Fans

I started playing D&D in the mid 80s with the Mentzer red box. The rest of my group started with 3.0. A few attempts have been made to get them to play something less rules intensive. We had a campaign using Basic Fantasy which went well, but after 10-11 sessions they wanted to go back to Pathf...

Ah good! Still my favoured version of D&D, and favoured tool to introduce newbies to rgps.
$20 seems a bit high as a price, though. I have seen a lot running from $3 to $5. (and I bought a set including the box here in the UK for £1.)

...or giant piles of treasures which are cursed, like in Howard's Queen of the Black Coast. Or the treasure of Smaug in Tolkien's The Hobbit, which induces dragon-sickness.
Speaking of which, are there rules for madness/sanity/corruption? These seem to be a staple of almost all Appendix N authors.

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

If the target demographics of DCCrpg is the people who have read/heard of the stuff in Appendix N, there is another factor which would impact on the level spread: the density of playing sessions, which for people of ~40 years or more tends to be quite low. There is no way I am interested in a 30 lev...

Re: Resurrection ?

Resurrection "not very Appendix N"? Hour of the Dragon, Xaltotun? :) Good catch, I forgot about that one. I do seem to recall that the priest of Asura says that he was really still dead with only the illusion of being alive. So I guess that would have made him like a lich. Yes. It was onl...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG

There are some very simple rules in the old Judges Guild ref. sheets, which I combined and extrapolated with some AD&D 1e rules for some interesting results. In a nutshell: - Immediately after each fight, a character can recover 1d4 hit points if he rests for 10 minutes. NO OTHER ACTIONS ALLOWE...

One ruleset, many settings

It seems this game will work mostly as a toolbox, given the plethora of sources it's based upon. Which is a plus IMO, I don't like games which have an implied setting (unless said setting is based on some literary source.) So, the idea: would it be feasible to produce different setting books (perhap...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

Joseph, you might want to have a look at the unarmed combat rules in Unearthed Arcana (System I, and snippets of System II.) They are essentially a normal attack, with some "special effect" tackled on. They are very fast and easy to use, and provide effects which weapons don't, so they are...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?

We're definitely aiming for a pre- 3.x D&D swords and sorcery game. One of the things that really stood out in the playtests at Gegnhis was how " un-3.x D&Dish " the players were behaving. We had one group flat out flee a couple encounters that bugged them out (not trusting to &qu...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

AD&D 1e Unearthed Arcana had pretty fast and simple grappling rules (System I.)
Some interesting rules also appeared in the old I1 module, which later "evolved" into the AD&D 2e system (which also was quite nice.)

Healing and clerics

I have been thinking about the ideas for the cleric class, and how it won't be a heal-bot but more of an exorcist; which is excellent news, BUT this brings the question: how is this shift in perspective going to affect healing? I have never liked the fact that clerics become healing wagons, so a mec...

Re: Difference between C&C and DCC?

Ouch. I take it you're not a C&C guy, eh Mike? I really wanted to like C&C. I was a playtester, bought the white box, and bought the first two printings. Even when my group laughed at how horribly edited the game was, I still wanted to run it. But after BFRPG came out and showed that...
