CW drew from quite an array of products. Check out the OGL legal text on the last page of the fourth book (I believe that's where it is); if you scan through the fine print in the last column you'll see quite a few entries for products drawn from.

It's hard to have much sympathy for the player. Before he went down to the kennel I TOLD him that he heard the sound of multiple dogs, AND he knew the orc went down there. And he's played plenty of D&D in the past, so he should know better. He does tend to get fatalistic when the adventure gets ...

I think only one of the kills can really be blamed to dice rolls. Most of them were due to the group being too spread out, not thinking tactically, or not retreating when they should have. Also, the two temporary fighter types were played with little thought to keeping them alive. What I may do is c...

Session Three, 12/08/2007 - The Brutality Continues

Last session, the group escaped from captivity and cleared the surface level of Castle Whiterock. A number of them had also made it to level two. One of my players couldn't make it this time, so that PC sat out and one of my other players brought in a temporary character, a fighter named Ingrid, to ...

1. It's BIG. It can take PCs from 1st to 15th level. However, you don't have to run it top to bottom. For 5th level PCs starting out, you might have the entire surface above the lake crumbled and impassible, and require them to enter through the flooded level (level 5) within the lake itself. How ma...

Unless you have specific plans for it, I'd be inclined to remove Felder village and have Cillamar remain the closest community to Castle Whiterock. The description of Cillamar hints at xenophobic tribes or cults living on the moors to the south of town, which to my mind would rule out the presence o...

For what it's worth, I haven't had any trouble so far with any of the book bindings. My group surveyed the site from the far side of the lake for a while, then both times more or less approached area 1 on the path. Though they did use Climb to scale the hill above area 1, toward the tower, to bypass...

Level 2 Recommendation

One recommendation for DMs running level 2: In the prison area (area 3), there is a walkway running in a U shape around the sunken area with the cells where prisoners are kept. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND placing a wall along the section of walkway between the two portcullises. As it stands now, it is easy...

I think the players overall are having a good time. At the end of the first session there was some discussion about abandoning the characters and just creating a new party, but I think they're overall happy they didn't. They seem resigned to some degree to character turnover (one player in particula...

Session Two, 11/10/2007 - Escape from the Slave Pits

Last session ended with the capture of all PCs by the slavers and the orcs. One of my players (the one running Sir Torsten Trueblade) decided he didn't like the paladin, and gave him up to play the half-orc Sheliak instead. Thus Torsten, now an NPC, ended up bleeding to death in the pit he was tosse...

CW Kill Count

I'll be happy to make use of the skully too!

Do you have another one for PCs taken prisoner (a "shackly")? In my first session I only out and out killed one PC, but was able to capture another five.

CW

I've run one session of CW so far, but I've still read less than half of it! I've read through the first 4 levels pretty thoroughly, and skimmed the rest of the first book. I've also read some of the appendices (notably the Inn) and the last levels in the 4th book. I have yet to read books 2 and 3 a...

DCC #51 - Castle Whiterock - game report [spoilers]

I just finished running my first session of Castle Whiterock today! Our group, with many players I have not DMed before, intends to meet once a month for a good 8-hour or so game. There are a total of five players; I gave each the option of running one of the pregens or creating a new character with...

missing towns

That leaves Fallen, Goatshead, Leavendale, and Terro's Rest with no information... I did end up writing my own details for these communities. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to post them. I'm just about through with my Player's Packet for my game--a combination of photocopied sections and stu...

Gazetteer Questions

Here's something else I've noticed, when going through the Gazetteer: Not all the towns on the map are detailed! Specifically, Fallen, Goatshead, Kitchmon, Leavendale, Terro's Rest, Ul-Yahzmotk, and Zan Tarkham are left undescribed. I finally got my hands on the Gazzetter of the Known Realms, and lo...

I much prefer hardcopy when it comes to adventures, such as DCCs. However, I'd probably make an exception for Castle Whiterock. It would be very useful to have at least the Gazetteer, Map book and Player Handout book as PDFs, so I can print out individual sheets as needed. The Gazetteer in particula...

Errata

Here's a bit of errata I've spotted:

The maps of CW indicate north in a different direction than in the text; north in the text would be east on the maps' compass rose. At least for levels 1 and 2.

DCC #51 - Castle Whiterock - DM Questions [poss. spoilers]

I thought I'd start a new Whiterock thread for DMs to post questions and seek help, with suitable warning for players to stay away! I'll start things off with this: CW has two separate historical sections. The first covers the history of Morrain, and is in the Gazetteer. It mentions a few dates: 267...

While they're at it, a player's map of Morrain would be great, but for that I can just give them a copy of the back of the gazetteer, or maybe abstract one from it somehow.

I'm not sure if I should start a new thread for this or not, but... I'm planning on running Castle Whiterock soon. I do not have the Gazetteer boxed set, and for the most part don't need it. However, one thing I have noticed is CW repeatedly references various DCC-specific deities that appear in the...

dealing with the slime

WRT the alchemost (ooze critter), our initial plan was to lure it out into the entry chamber, then circle around and get past it, locking it behind us. However, we ended up just luring it out of its lair, then hitting it from both sides; I think it did hit us once or twice before we dropped it. In r...

tourney results

Wow! We came in 1st in round one. I didn't expect that. (I'm one of the Bastard Sons of Lee Van Cleef). Like Blood Kings, we called the game rather than suffer a TPK in round 1. When we called it we had one PC stable at -6, one at 0 hp, one at 3 hp, and my character (Rootli) still full at 11. After ...

Now that I think on it, I have a question about something I've been wondering since the tournament, with regard to scoring. I understand that you get points if you disarm a trap, and lose points if you trigger a trap. But what if you trigger a trap in such a way as to avoid the consequences or negat...

My take

Hey there! I played in the group Bastard Sons of Lee Van Cleef ; we made it to the 2nd round and were the first alternate for round three. Sadly but unsurprisingly, all three teams showed for the final round. I was running Rootli; our band also had the aristocrat/monk, the dwarf rogue, and the adept...

Oh! Sooooo tempting! But I already have a ticket to 1777, so I'll leave it to a pair of people who might otherwise not have a chance of playing. (Tempting because I had originally wanted to play with a friend of mine, but couldn't get two tickets to my game.) You still planning on playing in the tou...
