Re: Why is Cthulhu Neutral?

Sorry praying for your god to come back when the stars are right and destroy civilization is chaotic! He's just very powerful chaos but still chaos. Yeah, but those prayers and desires are what's Chaotic. Real life example: Christianity. I don't think that god would be Chaotic, but fundamentalist o...

Re: Crawl! New Class Challenge! Draft Picks! (Pick the best!

Bards are incredible. People just expect them to cast, thieve, and fight better than the more focused classes. What makes them special is that they can do all three well. In 5-person party, they support all of the other roles; in a 3-4 person party they fill gaps; in a 1-2 person party, they're a a ...

Re: Why is Cthulhu Neutral?

Chaotic does not mean evil, at least not to me, in this game. Civilization and attempts to order the universe are Lawful, attempts to undermine that order is Chaotic. Cthulhu is Neutral due to his indifference to these struggling forces.

Re: Why is Cthulhu Neutral?

Maybe the reason you think he is Chaotic is all of the atrocities that have been carried out in his name.

Maybe he's not such a bad guy, y'know?

Re: Why is Cthulhu Neutral?

I think the idea is that Cthulu existed prior to the constructions of Lawful and Neutral and is outside of the struggle of order vs. entropy.

At least, that's how I explain it to my players when they ask this question.

Re: Mighty Deed of Arms: Volley of Arrows

Exactly, you get a better bell curve, but only a 1/9 to score the minimum or maximum damage. It also boosts your minimum damage if you aim against a single target. The real benefit comes at higher levels. For example, assuming a +0 Str modifier, a 1st level Warrior can dish out 5-9 damage on a roll ...

Mighty Deed of Arms: Volley of Arrows

A Warrior using a shortbow or longbow can attempt to fire a volley of arrows as their mighty deed. A Warrior may fire one additional arrow per attack per action die. The success of whether both arrows hit or not is determined with a single attack roll. A skilled Marksman may even try to split their ...

Re: Spell results: taking lower result possible?

No houserules on my end for this. There is a mercurial affect that allows the spellcaster to take any lower results. Maybe offer that to one spell of the players choice?

Re: How is everyones stamina holding up? (includes session l

I roll for their physical stats randomly (1d3, 1 = Str, 2 = Agi, 3 = Sta) when they hit 0 HP.

In my current campaign, I think we had like 6 deaths in three sessions, though none have permanently died.

Re: Do Wizards require a patron to be able to cast spells?

They do not. A player receives Invoke Patron after casting Patron Bond. Depending on how well they succeed at their bond determines whether or not they get access to the Patron Spells at all.

Re: Do Wizards require a patron to be able to cast spells?

They do not require a Patron as they don't receive it automatically (Elves, however, do). When you roll a natural 1, it asks you to roll another die to determine if you suffer taint, corruption, or misfire. Usually the entry says, "Patron taint or corruption). It's specific to each spell, unles...

Re: XP for Dreamquests?

If it doesn't have consequences, your players will probably be annoyed at it. Why not just give them a printed dream to read beforehand? I personally would run it exactly as a regular session, though, XP and everything. Maybe low XP rewards, but allow them to spellburn/luck burn, etc, and recover s...

XP for Dreamquests?

The next session I am running opens with a short adventure that takes place in a dream the characters are sharing. There will be combat, some puzzles--basically everything you would find in an adventure in the "real" world. The question I haven't found an answer for is: do they get XP for ...

Re: Gygax pre-"Appendix N"

Lovecraft is not a good writer. I mean this purely on an aesthetic level. His ideas are good, he knows how to set a mood, but his characters are flat and he can't write dialogue. Lovecraft writes in a mode that's half Gothic and half Icelandic Saga... sort of 18c. newspaper style. Some of the longe...

Re: Please take a look at my Half-orc class

I actually started with something similar when designing my Orc class, getting bonuses for taking damage. The details were different, but the concept the same. The reason I scrapped it was because the very thing it's predicated on (taking damage) is very inconsistent. Those end of the adventure enco...

Re: Guidelines for spell creation

The DC for most spells is equal to the result of the spellcheck. The levels of the effects should be broken down according to the spreads in the rule book. For example, a level 1 spell would be: 1 2-11 12-13 14-17 18-19 20-23 24-27 28-29 30-31 32+ Do not design with spellburn in mind. There is no wa...

Re: Multi-Classing

I would change their hit dice to be an average of the two. Examples:

Cleric + Thief = d7
Cleric + Warrior = d10
Cleric + Wizard = d6

Thief + Warrior = d9 (roll 1d10, ignoring results above 9)
Thief + Wizard = d5

Warrior + Wizard = d8
