Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
I am going to take what may be an extreme position on this one. I think that a separate DR mechanic should not be added to DCC RPG. I also think it should be removed from 3.x/PFRPG. It is completely redundant. I see Armor Class as being a combined, catch-all sort of stat. It is a way to take the al...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?
We're definitely aiming for a pre- 3.x D&D swords and sorcery game. One of the things that really stood out in the playtests at Gegnhis was how " un-3.x D&Dish " the players were behaving. We had one group flat out flee a couple encounters that bugged them out (not trusting to &qu...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?
DCC RPG strikes me as having no concept of the "level appropriate encounter" just like the original game. Exactly! I really dislike the complex balancing of encounters. Too much balance creates a boring game. The ethos of the new modules will indeed differ from the old DCCs. But, as Harle...

Re: Warrior mechanics
High level pc's who achieve immortal status is definitely a D&D thing, but is it an Appendix N thing? How tough was Conan really in D&D terms? He certainly wasn't killing Set. Elric? - pretty lame without his artifact level sword. Anybody in LotR? Yeah, Gandalf beat a Balrog but he started ...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
I like the fact that, unlike many other versions of D&D, this game leans more toward an experience of "oh wow that was an awesome experience, with fantastic & bloody consequences that none of us could have anticipated!" and less toward the experience of "we've steadily rose t...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
I agree with Fullerton, it's not about 'career' dungeoneers, more about the unpredictable, so I have no problem with high stakes spell use - after all, you could roll a Critical Success and save the day for the party. Just don't rely on using your favourite spell all the time (which is what spoils ...

Re: Warrior mechanics
And btw, I'm sure my experience w/ AD&D is way out of the norm, but we got our characters up to 15th level. No lie. Same characters from 7th grade through 12th. And then in university we bumped them to 18th for an "Epic Fest", where we traveled to hell in order to rescue a prisoner he...

Re: Experience
My biggest objection about XP for gold is that they can buy swords and armor and other stuff to make them better, plus they get the XP which makes them better. If you force them to "waste" their gold at least we limit that part of it! The DM could make shopping an advancement experience. ...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
Agreed. I wouldn't want to see a party devolve into infighting because the mage had too many mishaps. One of the worst thing I could imagine is the caster causing the death of a party member due to a spell misfiring on a bad roll. C'mon, party infighting makes for the most memorable sessions. :wink...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
I really like it that magic is dangerous and deadly. It is the perfect counter to the "caster dominance" problem from 3.x and Pathfinder. That, however, is only a beneficial side effect. I find the magic system to be really fun. You could make quite an adventure out of spell research. Thi...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?
It was that blurb, I read it and my interest waned. I expect a bit of ambition from published products rather than what it seemed to be about, going through the paces, obvious locations, dungeon punk etc. Upon reading a couple, I was glad to be proved wrong and what Harley has written in this threa...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
As the mage who took out his party with color spray, I agree. The suggestion I had is to allow you to choose lesser effects within a range of your roll equal to your caster level minus the spell level. Taking color spray as an example, if the spell(level 1) has 8 ranks of magnitude and as a level 3...

Off topic, but those worthless giants couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I kept waiting for that fateful 20 so I could pull out the giant crit table. But instead you guys played smart, were quick on your feet and weren't leaving anyone behind. It felt like everyone earned their survival that ga...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?
From the description of the RPG: Glory & Gold Won by Sorcery & Sword You’re no hero. You’re a reaver, a cutpurse, a heathen-slayer, a tight-lipped warlock guarding long-dead secrets. You seek gold and glory, winning it with sword and spell, caked in the blood and filth of the weak, the dark,...

DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011
I just finished the second session of DCC at Genghis. Again, I had a great time. I laughed and talked so much my throat is scratchy. Thank you, Harley for running!! I am totally stoked after playing for two four-hour sessions today. I won't give any spoilers for "Blades Against Death" or &...

Organized Play for DCCRPG????
Have Joseph or Harley given any thought to a "Living Aereth" organized play society? WoTC has the RPGA and "Living Forgotten Realms" and Paizo has the Pathfinder Society. This seems to be a good way to introduce players to a new game and increase visibility at Cons. Just a thought.

That may be true. However, I know several gamers that like to have digital character sheets rather than paper. It is not only about number crunching.joela wrote:If what Joseph says is true, it takes five, maybe ten minutes, tops to create a PC in the DCC RPG by hand.

Hero Lab is a rather cool character generation software. Is there any possibility of working with Lone Wolf to get support of DCCRPG added?

Re: Thoughts on a simplified SRD game.
Yes...if one does that. :) In my mind, the single most important defining difference between game design in 1974 and game design now is the concept of "balance." In 1974, there was really no effort at making the game balanced. Characters died regularly, careless PCs ended up fighting drag...
