Re: Save or die
I do think SOD situations should be somewhat rare. However, I also think that the presence of instant death makes the countless hours put into the 14th level character that much more awesome. It is more of an accomplishment that your character survived that long. It will all really depend on how the...

Re: Just houserule it
The above items are the minimum on what is necessary to keep the basic disagreements out of a game. Anything beyond that helps fill out a game in depth. But a good set of rules that cover 95% of the characters (realistic) actions, will make the game run smoother and faster. Because everyone is on t...

Re: Just houserule it
I agree in principle. But I think this kinda conflates the purpose of the Grappling thread altogether. Here's my most recent post there. Reposted here because I feel it's relevant. ... So, yes, in principle I agree with the thread. But specifically, I disagree on the two facets of unarmed combat I'...

Appendix N and D&D related movies
I also recently watched the 1963 film "The Raven" (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057449/ ) which is a hokey sorcerer film that is very clearly the origin of several D&D spells. I've heard it said that Gygax was a fan of this movie, and you can see its application to D&D once yo...

Re: Zocchi Dice - Seek out our own or for sale here?
Yay! My Zocchi Dice arrived in the mail today! I am ready for more playtesting.
My only complaint so far is that I couldn't get color matching d7s.

Re: Save or die
Back in 1999 a friend of mine ran a group of our friends and I through the I6 (Ravenloft) module on Halloween using the 1e rules. It was too much fun! :) I went through two characters that night. My first one died in character creation. The DM rolled up some random starting items for us. One of my i...

Re: Just houserule it
Perhaps there could be a specific forum here for houserules with the coolest or most useful ones finding their way into the DCC Annuals.
I think that would be full of win.

Just houserule it
The discussions on grappling rules and DR over the past several days have left me thinking about OSR games and the nature of simpler rules systems. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the DCC RPG rules perhaps should include neither specific grappling rules nor a DR system. These areas shoul...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
Whether or not to do monster books hung me up for a bit, until I thought about Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu book. (I am rereading it because I haven't run it in years and recently came up with a good idea for it.) The CoC book contains a fairly short section on the main Mythos monsters and other asso...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
Don't worry guys, subsequent reprints of the core rulebook will include any sort of errata or corrections. I'd like to say the first printing will be perfect but I've been in this business long enough to know that something will need to be corrected in the second printing. :) What I do anticipate a...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
To help DCC become more popular, GG will need to publish at least a monster manual or an online list of 'standard' monsters already converted to DCC. Orc, Ogre, Giant, Goblin, Sprite, Zombie, etc... I think it's been covered that some 'standard' monsters will be in the rulebook. Correct me if I'm w...

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
If it were part of the core rules, it would be a part I'd house rule out -- for a simpler more traditional AC system. It perhaps goes without saying that I would do the same thing. The traditional AC system plus good narration from the GM works well for me. I like simple math and simple mechanics a...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?
I like the way that Pathfinder RPG handles this. It still uses the 3.x multiclassing rules, but de-emphasizes them in favor of creating multiple classes with lots of flavor (see the PFRPG Advanced Player's Guide and the upcoming Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat). I think Elric would be the Magus c...

Re: Grappling in DCC?
I like the Free Whack then opposed STR check to grapple. Then subsequent STR checks to escape. There is one small problem, however. It does not take into account evasion. So, maybe make it Free Whack, then opposed DEX check to get into range, then opposed STR check to make the grapple. Keep it simpl...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
I've probably mentioned this elsewhere, but I can't remember for sure, so here is a brief commentary on monsters. One of the refreshing elements of reading Appendix N books is that they have a knack for presenting creatures in a fresh manner. Most of the Appendix N books were published before the g...

Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC RPG?
I was just looking over the listings of DCC modules for 3e and 4e and noticed the listing for "Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens". I recall that there was a version of the book for 3e as well as the 4e version. I was wondering if any thought has been given to producing a DCC RPG version of thi...

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
So where does this leave me? I like the concept of DR, but it does not seem like there is much support for adding it to DCC RPG. Don't get me wrong. I like the concept of DR also. As you have described it I think it doesn't fit with the design goals of DCC RPG. (I am just a playtester, however, so ...

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
One more thing to note here. I seem to remember a post saying that AC were going to be much more restrictive than their 3e and 4e counterparts. They will have to be because the bonuses are going to be more simplified. There are no longer going to be: 1. absurdly high ability scores 2. feat bonuses ...

Re: Grappling in DCC?
I remember reading on this forum that Joesph wanted to try and keep the rulebook down to around 64 pages if possible. So, assuming this minimalistic approach is still one of the goals, I am left with a question. Do we really need specific rules for grapples, overruns, etc. or is the "Mighty Dee...

Re: Grappling in DCC?
I was giving it some thought and considered that maybe there could be some sort of "Cry Uncle" mechanic. Something along the lines of a chart with a column for Fisticuffs, Wrestling and Running Away. So when a combat gets to the point that one side or the other is ready to break it off, t...

Re: Grappling in DCC?
I think Grappling sub-systems have been overly complicated, yet what existed prior to them wasn't great either. I've tried all kinds and found them either way too complicated (3e) or simplistic to the point of hardly being a mechanic (roll under stat, make up the rest). Check out the CMB/CMD (Comba...

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
I think that a separate DR mechanic should not be added to DCC RPG. I also think it should be removed from 3.x/PFRPG. It is completely redundant. I don't know if this is a pitch to get DR into the DCC RPG, at this point, or just an exploration of DR as a mechanic. Just from the level of complicatio...

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG
I think Occam's Razor applies here. If you have a monster that only gets hit by Silver or Cold Iron... POOF! The monster can only be hit and damaged by Silver or Cold Iron. No need for any DR or AC stuff. If you want a less cut-and-dry version... Monsters that "can only be hit" by Silver ...
