Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
The Dungeon Alphabet was a test model for the DCC RPG layout, if you're familiar with that most excellent book by Michael Curtis... Big, BIG thumbs up on that. The layout of the Dungeon Alphabet is nothing short of awesome. I especially like when the art interacts with the text, as on the "O I...

Re: Zocchi Dice - Seek out our own or for sale here?
Have DCC got in touch with the new zochi dice guys to see if the will do a special DCC RPG set? Preferably with a d7? I reckon pretty much everyone who buys the game would get a set! Yes, if the set is opaque (as opposed to translucent), solid colors (as opposed to speckled or whatnot), and inked. ...

Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3rd?
The first designer's blog was posted on January 4th. Before that day, I was casually curious about DCC RPG, but I had ZERO intention of buying it. Now, over two months later, I have moved from NO WAY to a solid MAYBE. Virtually everything I've heard about the game is a plus in my estimation. I look ...

Re: questions about combat
I myself use Gary's falling damage system first mentioned in Dragon #69, as follows: If you fall 10', you take 1d6 damage (an average of 3.5 hp damage). If you fall 20', you take 3d6 damage (an average of 10.5 hp damage). If you fall 30', you take 6d6 damage (an average of 21 hp damage). If you fall...

Re: questions about combat
On the dragonsfoot and odd74 forums, they say that rule was a mistype. They say the rule was actually supposed to have the falling damage compound over and over. So 20' would be 1d6 + 2d6. And 50' would be 1d6 + 2d6 +3d6 + 4d6 + 5d6. That makes more sense to me. But I don't know how reliable those ...

Re: Magic Items and DCC
This may be just a style of play, but I'm not big on including many magic items. Even "basics" like healing potions. The more "normal" magic is, the less magical it becomes. In my home game the players have a grand total of zero magic items in their possession. That describes my...

The Sinbad movies and Jason And The Argonauts with great Harryhausen monsters. Jason And The Argonauts - Skeleton Fight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yYeZMx1Y7U Yep. These are the movies that feel the most D&Dish to me, with Jason and the Argonauts being on the top of the heap. :) The Hobbit ...

Yep. Let's keep the DCC: RPG rulebook as slim as possible. The only way to prevent having thousands of pages of rules is to be comfortable with DM fiat.

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
To avoid rulebook bloat in general, I'm leaning toward only doing one additional rulebook a year after the core book. The additional one would be called the "DCC Annual" (for 2012, 2013, etc.) and would include any new rules, errata, clarifications, and generally cool ideas that came up i...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
What do you guys think? Do people want a lot of monster books? Or, knowing that it's very simple to create new monsters, would you rather just create your own? I say a big NO to monster books. I will never buy another monster book. I agree with James Raggi (while acknowledging hyperbole) in his exc...

FWIW, I like the idea of higher-level magic-users NOT getting more control of their spells. Instead of more control, they simply get more raw power.

Re: Elric's plate armor and Gandalf's sword
If your Dex does from 12 to 11, you lose a point from AC, Reflex saves, and missile attack bonus. Lose a point from Con and you could lose 1 hitpoint per level and 1 from your Fort save. FWIW, changes to dexterity in pre-3rd edition A/D&D also can affect a character's AC and missile attack bonu...

Re: DCC RPG Playtest at DunDraCon 2011
I probably won't run the DCC RPG as a home campaign, but that's not meant to be a slight on the game itself. I'm an AD&D and OD&D player, and I personally prefer to run lighter-weight systems ... at least for long-term games. For me, the DCC RPG was a bit too character sheet-intensive. Coul...

Elric's plate armor and Gandalf's sword
The spell-casters in the Appendix N books tend to not be shy of using serious weapons (such as swords). And Elric at least didn't hesitate to wear plate armor. In fact, I can't think of a single magic-user in pre-D&D literature that basically said, "No, I can't use that weapon or wear that ...

a couple of my players are "elves or nothing" types. I'm almost a "human or nothing" type when I'm a player. I NEVER choose to play a non-human. I haven't played a non-human for probably 15 years, ever since the one-shot in which everyone had to be a dwarf or a gnome. I enjoy pl...

If you wanted to take DCC rpg's use of randomization into the area of advancement I remember Geoffrey posting on Jim Raggi's site about a method: At the conclusion of each session, each player rolls 1d20 for his character. On an adjusted roll of 20, the character gains a level. The roll is modified...

Re: Zocchi Dice - Seek out our own or for sale here?
I still don't see how this could give you anywhere near a fair distribution. The flat sides are entirely different than the rest of the die. Fair? We don't need fair results! This is the DCC RPG! We want to upset game balance. We want to upset statistical probability. We want to make your game inte...

Re: Experience
A concern I have with xp for gold is the relative paucity of treasure (Smaug's hoard excepted) in what I've read of Appendix N. If the acquisition (or the spending) of gold is a major part of xp, then the Appendix N characters would never have gotten higher than 3rd level or so.
