Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
Jingles, Nurzual, Snooth, Qort, and Brandybland: 4. (As an aside, I just scrolled back over my characters and realized for the first time that out of my whole crew, I rolled only 3 stats with positive modifiers ... 2 of the 3 on Jingles, a halfling whose class won't really use them! Meanwhile, I rol...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
Nurzual says: Let's bring the length of chain in case we find a use for it. You there, with the backpack ... help me gather it up and we'll put it in there for you to carry. Snooth agrees and, taking care not to crush his sheaf of parchment, tries to fit the loose chain in his backpack. By my count...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
I'm just happy to be playing, so I'll go with consensus on whether to skip people or wait. I do hesitate to wait more than one day, though, if there's a prolonged absence. It might get easy to lose momentum that way. I'm fine fast-forwarding to everyone being unlocked, but Nurzual would suggest some...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
If Brandybland has been able to reach the axe or a spear, she will slide the haft through the weakened ring holding the chain to the wall and loop her chain around the top of the weapon per Jingles' suggestion. Brandybland (to Snooth and Sunny Jim): Here, guys, grab hold of the chain right here and ...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
Nurzual: As it seems that collaboration strains our patience so intolerably, I recommend we try using one of these weapons as a lever in our attempt to break loose from the wall. Qort: Right -- screw collarboning and let's use the axes to chop ourselves loose! Nurzual: No, I mean ... Being familiar...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
(In-character dialogue will be green) Jingles immediately checks to see if her coin purse is still on her. Snooth blinks and looks around. Brandybland reaches out to see if she can reach the key. Nurzual: Kind fellows, it looks as though we're all attached to the same chain. Perhaps if we can each m...

Re: Purple Planet Funnel, Possible Campaign
It's great if you don't read the funnel just yet! Since we'll be using it to start the adventure, it'd take some of the surprise out of things if you did. Feel free to create 4-5 PCs for the funnel. Things are moving along quickly! We'll close admission after GnomeBoy and Bilgewriggler make their c...

Re: Attempting to cast spells untrained is an automatic fail
On the same kind of topic, another kind of silly question about how that works. It does have Wizard's apprentice as a level 0 character occupation. Would a character that rolled that as a level 0 be able to go on to make this roll as a trained roll, since such a thing would be in his background? Sc...

Re: Leveling up from 0 to Wizard level 1
Pretty cool! Simpler than my idea and more likely to produce the intended spell effect, but with a greater chance of misfire and its attendant chaos ...Raven_Crowking wrote:I use this: http://ravencrowking.blogspot.ca/2012/0 ... ls-on.html

Re: Leveling up from 0 to Wizard level 1
I'd probably also rule that any successfully cast spell (as in the third example above) would become one of the wizard's known spells with the associated Mercurial Magic effect. Once out of the funnel, of course, wizards could be assumed to use downtime to acquire their full slate of level-one spells.

Leveling up from 0 to Wizard level 1
I happened across an old thread expressing doubt about the plausibility of a 0-level character hitting 10 XP and suddenly having full access to a full spread of wizard spells without any period of study, scribing into a grimoire, etc. I agree with the sentiment, but I can't justify depriving the cha...

Re: Frozen in Time ... estimated session length?
I did Frozen in Time as a single four-hour session. Remember that the machinery of the place is under your control, based on the time limit you set. When you are about an hour away from when you want to ramp up, start introducing hints that there is a real time limit. That's a great point! And than...

Frozen in Time ... estimated session length?
I'm looking at running "Frozen in Time" on Free RPG Day as a funnel. Anybody have an estimate on how long the session would likely take?

Re: What does a helmet actually do?
Some ideas: They could sell it or trade it for something more useful. Since they're 0 level, you could just give them a +1 to armor class out of pity. If an opponent has a choice of who to target, decide based on whether the circumstances make a helmeted character seem more or less attractive as a t...

Re: Spellburn for 20
So you play it as 20 + 20 in your games? I've run few games where someone played a Wizard or Elf, and never had in come up in those where those Classes have been played... ...but yeah, it'd be 20+20. 20 points of spellburn is a HUGE sacrifice and I think it seems fine. I would have a lot of fun in ...

Re: Spellburn for 20
...the rules would just say that it equates to the top result, since that's the effective outcome.... Except that you could have some circumstance in a given case where some other effect was suppressing the result, so even with the big boost, you might not reach the top result. Saying the top resul...

Re: Spellburn for 20
Yeah, it's an easy enough dynamic to account for if players start abusing it ... it's just an extremely different dynamic if you get the +20 than if you don't. And it seems like if you got the +20, the rules would just say that it equates to the top result, since that's the effective outcome. Treati...

Re: Spellburn for 20
As far as I can tell you do get the 20 additional points. In most cases this is the only way to get some of these top results. I would likely roll a 1 when doing something this devastating to a character so it's a tactic I'd only use on a one shot or Con game. It seems like a real boss-killer. Ther...

Spellburn for 20
I imagine this has been asked before, so apologies if it's redundant to one or more longago threads ... So there's the option to spellburn a whole 20 points to get a natural 20 for your spell-check roll. But do you also get the +20 for the points you burn? That would pretty much guarantee a maxed-ou...

Re: Trying to get back into the game - a question and some i
Well, then bend the game in whatever way you need to, to satisfy the players. It sounds like your campaign is more "series of adventures" than sandbox-y... It's not a campaign at all yet. I'll be running modules to start with because the available ones are awesome, and because I'm too cre...

Re: Trying to get back into the game - a question and some i
My group came from four years of 4th edition D&D and they loved that iteration of the game. They are tactical players and that game was in their wheelhouse. They had powerful characters that they were attached to. DCC has been a harder sell on my end, and I have to home-brew some mechanics for ...
