Re: Reading Appendix N
From this list, I just read The Face in the Frost by John Bellairs. D&D might have gotten some of its flavor for wizards from this as they were fairly eccentric characters. It was a short read, but even so I don't recommend it. It was an odd combination of whimsy and creepy that never felt quite...

I certainly hope this happens before Gencon this year. I'd love to get into some games of this there.goodmangames wrote:Don't worry, everybody will get to playtest the game in mid-2011! Pre-order or no.

Maybe you should change the name of Stamina to something else like Endurance? That way each stat begins with a different letter which would make it a bit easier to write out a stat block. (of course, changing back to constitution would work too as charisma is no longer around)

Re: Designer's Blog #1: What It Is, And What It Isn't
I'm guessing that the stats that did get renamed (dexterity - agility, constitution - stamina, charisma - personality) were done just because the new names are easier for complete beginners to understand. Seriously, who outside of D&D players use words like dexterity, constitution, or charisma?

Re: Designer's Blog #1: What It Is, And What It Isn't
Especially the renamed stats. If you are going to copy the six, why not use the same names? It seems like change just for the sake of change, not actual improvement. Well, Wisdom isn't just renamed to Luck- it's a whole new stat and mechanic from what I've read. Also the combat and spellcasting mec...

Re: Challenging the stereotype
maybe it would be clearer to say that it's based on d20 btw there are indeed a few things of 3ed that should be kept out of the DCC 1) iterative attacks 2) dual*multi-classing like there is no tomorrow 3) only 3 saving throws (this sound deeply wrong on so many levels....) 4) feats 5) skill points ...

Re: what game is most like the DCC RPG?
Sorry, I can't keep the positions of twenty plus combatants straight in my head without the use of a map and markers of some kind. That's a good tip about using the character sheets as a kind of marker though. As for character sheets, I found this one which worked great for this concept. They allow ...

Agreed on Kothar! Interesting on Wagner. I am not familiar with him but I'll add him to my list... Wagner is on some D&D edition's reading list- maybe one of the basic sets. Although I started reading them purely because of the kick ass Frazetta covers. :) http://photo.goodreads.com/books/12815...

Heh, the gong farmer has to be the funniest one on the list. I just took several lists of medieval jobs I found around the internet and mashed them into a table. What exactly is a "gong farmer"? :? The terminology isn't familar to me. Surprisingly, wikipedia has a good article about it- h...

Re: what game is most like the DCC RPG?
Another question about using the large group of pc's - how do you keep track of where everyone is and what they are doing? 18-20 pc's is a lot bigger group than what I'm used to running. Even if you use minis, it would seem to be tough to keep who is who straight. I'm thinking I might have to resort...

Re: Reading Appendix N
Gardner Fox IS in Appendix N. I have his complete Kothar and Kyrik series sitting here beside me. They're hackneyed sword-and-sorcery, in my personal opinion, but they did make the list. As much as I dislike the books themselves, I love the cover art, especially how the Kothar series uses a differe...

Re: Another Contest Idea for DCC RPG: Monsters!
The basic concept of "spell research" has evolved from "trial and error, lots of experimentation, and years of questing" to "go find a magic scroll and copy down a spell." No! Spell research should mean things blow up! Expensive materials are lost! Distant continents m...

Re: Another Contest Idea for DCC RPG: Monsters!
Joseph said Orc (et al) stats will be in rules, but there's no need for a slew of purely Tolkienian modules - there's 30+ years of that. I can agree with that. Personally I'd like to see adventures that aren't so geared towards altruistic pc's. Conan was robbing tombs and breaking into temples, not...

Re: Another Contest Idea for DCC RPG: Monsters!
Different strokes, I suppose :) . I didn't think the game was about doing another D&D, I thought it was taking D20 to Appendix N. True, but lets be realistic. Even if they are mainly focusing on making a totally new fantasy game based solely on the Appendix N books, the 800lb gorilla on that li...

Ooh... I just discovered that since several of these titles are pretty old and out of copyright, they can be found on the project gutenberg site. For example, here is The Moon Pool -

Re: Another Contest Idea for DCC RPG: Monsters!
I'll respect what you are saying, yet I would urge a middle ground. While Conan may have feared the supernatural at all times, he often faced the usual assortment of foes; humans in Conan's world. I do enjoy having the "run of the mill" orcs and goblins. In fact, I would argue by having o...
