Re: How is HP supposed to increase?
Somewhere in the forum archives I asked this exact question about a week ago. The answer is that you do add Stamina modifier at each level when you roll hit points. (Also note that apparently only the modifier at the time you roll matters, so subsequent stamina changes do not change hit points). ok...

Re: 3d6, in order
I think the 3d6, as it says in the Beta, has the goal of avoiding any possible min/maxing. With a point buying system like that I could get a ch with 16 STR, dropping PER and INT to 4. And then he rolls his occupation and ends up a Halfling. Good point, but that's just 10%, let's say 20% if you cou...

How is HP supposed to increase?
:| I checked a couple of times, but I can't find anywhere in the Beta Rules a clarification for this: how many HP do you get per level, after lvl 0? It says that at lvl 0, you get 1d4+STAMINA mod. Are we supposed to get the Class HD+ STAMINA mod, after that? or just the HD? :?: I'm used to 3E, so it...

Re: Ability Score Modifier Progression
I like the modifiers as they are now. They give the idea that most people are average, but that doesn't stop them from getting rich, famous and victorious. In this game, unlike 3E, you could perfectly play a 13 INT wizard, without feeling like garbage. The warrior probably has got 14 STR, anyway :D ...

Re: Joseph, update the free rpg day module pdf please?
The pdf isn't out yet, I'm looking at the physical copy. I'm just hoping Joseph will update the pdf before putting it out for download. It's too late to change the print module but I'm hoping the PDF version will get changed before going out. I would just like to get the pdf asap, because i'd like ...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
This makes me question the need for levels of spell. Unless you just can't conceive of a 'weak' manifestation of a spell. In my opinion almost all higher level spells, from fly to fireball to polymorph to teleport could easily be given lower number results that fit. Then you can do away with spell ...

Re: 3d6, in order
Simple point buy system: Set all ability scores to 10. You can increase an ability score by 1 by decreasing a single other score by 2. Repeat as desired. What? Foul you cry? That results in a character that is by definition below average? Tough. Roll 3d6 six times in order if you don't like it. I t...

Re: Non-prof penalty
How is that simpler than a flat -2 penalty for using a non-proficient weapon regardless of your level or class? I think that could work but I'd like to see the Occupational Proficiency remain but have it fixed. You're a Herbalist, and you've got a Staff? You're proficient with staves. Period. I thi...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
ok, i don't know really about Appendix N 'cos I haven't read any of those books. I just saw in the beta that for level 3 and 5 of the wizard and cleric classes we're supposed to get some higher level spell. I'm not saying I want a 713 pages of spells :P I'm ok with fewer spells than 3E!! Thing is, d...

Re: Non-prof penalty
From what I've seen, easily a third of level 0 characters end up trying to attack with some item/weapon they didn't start with. I like encouraging this improvisation and creativity. Then eliminate all "starting" weapon proficiency and change the non-weapon proficiency penalty to -2. Then ...

Re: 3d6, in order
The thing I like best about Basic D&D's stat modifiers is that they're modeled after the bell curve of 3d6. To me, that's a big plus. I agree. That works great. Reading this topic though, i noticed that these bell-curve modifiers have the strange effect of making it easier to raise higher stats...

Re: Critical Hits and Burning Luck
the menu rolls should only allow for luck being spent before the roll to prevent cherry picking of results. +d100. Absolutely! Maybe characters just should not be able to spend luck on rolls that already have their luck modifier added in. It also creates problems about which modifier to apply: the ...

Re: Is corruption meant to be permanent?
Well, my solution to this is in another thread where I posit the removal of spell levels. Some spells just have a wider range of lost/failure results. I LOVE THIS. I mean, there's no danger of having 1st level Wizards getting gamebreaking spells. Magic is scarce and difficult to come by, so it's pe...

Re: "roll" weird die by turning pages in the DCC RPG?
in my experience with solo rpg-books (i don't know what's the name in English, in italian they translated roughly as GameBooks... sometime around the '80-'90s i think), after some time you alter the odds, because there are pages you use more than others, and there's a bigger chance that your "l...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
And i bet my buckler everyone is waiting to see level 3 Fireball/Lightning  Not me :) I think the blaster spells are too D&D but I know I'm probably in the minority judging from the spell threads. So far I like how the spells work, especially condensing all those spells into Cantrip, but ...

Re: Get rid of infravision!
I don't think that infravision has any problem to it. I wouldnt certainly let the only dwarf in the group scout the cavern while the rest awaits in the darkness. They'd get ambushed/eaten/turned into practice targets for goblin arrows. I bet they'd rather light a torch. In that case, they can just l...

Re: Beta Testing Questions from my group.
I'm going to try a houserule of "+2 bonus for ever 1 point of luck burned" if spent before the roll, "1 for 1 if you spend afterward." This might be a tad unbalancing, but I want to encourage spending before hand. Haven't had a chance to test it out in game yet. I did think of t...

Re: Beta Testing Questions from my group.
I'm making sure that every character has to roll luck for something at least once or twice an adventure. So, depleting this ability just to make rolls isn't always good policy. I completely agree with this. Luck is an ability, and as such it should get to be considered a precious thing, just like S...

Re: Initiative and Two-Handed Weapons
I wouldn't use funky dice in initiative at all, it just gets cumbersome if you don't have the proper dice and you have to go through all the strange calculations... it's fun when you do it for a spell effect or a MDoA, i think, but not if you're doing it all the time (some people suggested giving a ...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
I feel your pain. Jospeh is "the man" when it comes down to making information-release decisions and perhaps he'll agree to toss a couple more spells our way. The key at this point is that we're still in a free playtest. Making some things public and keeping other things secret is an inte...

Re: Birth Augur and Lucky Roll
I'll probably run it that your Birth Augur gives you an automatic +1 bonus in your lucky roll, unaffected by your actual luck score. (Since the luck mod already effects criticals, I don't consider this a big balance loss) Eliminating the 'sliding scale' eliminates the bookkeeping. It could also pro...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
As i suggested in another topic, I think we should get more Luck based tests. That way, luck feels more like an ability and not a pool; if you burn luck, and you're left with a negative modifier, all your next luck tests are going to be bad. Fate gives, Fate takes. Somebody argued (correctly, i would...

Re: Reflex vs Agility, Skills vs Thief Skills
4) The more esoteric thief abilities (pretty much everything that thieves can do that could not be attempted with a regular skill check (sneak, hide, climb) could justify the unique (old-school throwback) d% rolls since they don't clash with the skill system. Steve I totally agree with this. I like...

Re: 0 lvl PC weapon training
so a 0 level char is +0 with everything a, for example, 3rd level cleric is +2 with his proficient wpns, and +0 with everything else I like this. It makes more sense than having a character using a battleaxe at lvl 0, then using another weapon, then leveling to wizard and discovering that if she pi...
