Re: Percentage Thief Skills

This is what I want: NO to skills, and skill checks, skill systems--it's so 3x/4e. OK to Ability Checks--but only as last resort to role-playing things out as per beta Skills chapter. YES to unique system for Thief Class Abilities--but for thieves ONLY. RATHER have % based checks than d20 based chec...

Re: No seafaring occupations

In an attempt to give our upcoming DCCRPG game more of a pulp fantasy feel, I replaced the demihuman occupations with the following, which include some nautical occupations: Dwarven blacksmith => Barbarian (Spear, Hide Armor) Dwarven herder => Horse Nomad (Shortbow, Pony) Dwarven miner => Northman ...

Re: Party composition & different roles

Check page 56 of Beta doc, you'll find a table for starting cash for levels 1-3 It depends on class, like 5d12 for a warrior, 4d20 for a cleric, or 3d10 for a thief. Anyway, a lot less than you thought ;) Oh! I knew I saw it somewhere, couldn't find it, and just figured that I mixed it up with one ...

Re: A couple of observations upon reading the beta...

It was not until the rise of modern Feminism in the education system back in the '70s and '80s that the concept of "man" and male pronouns was bullied into the category of discriminatory. When you use the term bullied, you make it sound like it's a bad thing. That's like saying, before it...

True, on Middle Earth. But it "bothered" at least one of us, so it might not be as widely adopted as you would like to believe.

However, didn't I see someplace on these forums that Mr G. Stated that replacement 1st levels or above would NOT get the added d4 hp from their 0 level experience? Not much but still (if I am recalling correctly) that is a reasonable incentive to go back and try and make a L0 live thru a pilot adve...

Re: again about MDoA ...

@Tortog : I think that the aim in DCC is to tell a story, survive and overcome terrible odds. The aim in 3E has always been the aquisition of power, whether through magical items - which are quite easy to obtain, and the game clearly states how much wealth you're supposed to have at each level (ok,...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?

I've never been a fan of multiclassing. It makes things messy, and kind-of promotes character optimizing, which in turn leads to power-gaming, which leads to Evil. Want a Sword Mage? Copy the Elf. Want a Fighter-thief? Re-skin the Halfling. ACK has some neat ideas for new classes (in their attempt t...

Re: again about MDoA ...

I think people are taking the MDoA that are listed way too literal. They're just guidelines and examples. When I played a 4-level Warrior, Joela played a 4-level Dwarf, we attempted a "Mighty Deed" every chance we could. We couldn't every time, because it wasn't realistic to do so every at...

Re: A couple of observations upon reading the beta...

Actually, most women I talk to appreciate it when you include some sort of gender reference. Of course some don't care, but those that do appreciate the little things like including a few hers and shes once in a while. It really shouldn't be a big deal for anyone. It has less to do with PC (f*ck pol...

Re: "Wizard's apprentice" and spells (Quick Question)

Agreed completely. Maybe playing with no dice rolling, no sheets can be ok for a casual 2 hour game, if you and your players just want to rp a bit. But for a longer game, the DM's whims are too much of an issue, because even the best DM with the best intentions will have a bad day sooner or later, ...

Re: again about MDoA ...

that's why i wanted to houserule that MDoA doesn't get the bonus damage. If you declare you want to attack the ogre leg to trip him, instead of just going for the head, and you deal 1d10+d5+1 damage, that's 9.5 average damage... with a maximum of 16, which could be enough to just kill the ogre........

Did he run it that you got the bonus die damage or a MDoA, or both? How did he do cleave? Extra attack if you rolled a 3+ on the attack die? It's hard to say because I didn't see the stats on the monster, I just described what I wanted to do and Joe adjudicated it the results. It might not have bee...

Re: again about MDoA ...

Speaking of MDoAs, have you guys been playing that you only roll the attack die once each round and apply it to every attack (even the dwarf shield attack)? I don't like that since all of the MDoA will succeed or all fail. To me it would make more sense to reroll the attack die with every attack. I...

Re: Alternate physical levels

I'm coming from a different perspective. I'm concerned that the amount of ability attrition is greater than the amounts (re)gained from level bonuses alone. As I'm mentioned before, 5 levels isn't enough to really see long term effects, but evidence (admittedly anecdotal) has shown that the attritio...

Re: Alternate physical levels

The power levels in 3x/4e are ridiculous, and that's something we both agree that DCC is trying to avoid. In no way am I saying the Ability increases should be absolute, or a total reflection of power gained. Just a little bit of both power gained and a bit of power-loss recovery. I'm talking about ...

Re: Alternate physical levels

The XP wouldn't have to change, if you only did the attribute "level" once, you would reach 10th level at whatever 11th level XP might be for a given class. Nope, it's still a "level" in something that's not your class. It'd just be simpler to wrap ability increases into class l...

So is it considered off-topic when no one even mentions what the original poster had to say? I think an alternate level is pretty elegant, can be taken in lieu of a regular level for those who choose to do so, and when they need to do so, and otherwise does little to impede progress. Alternative le...

Re: Alternate physical levels

A good question here isn't the whole stronger and smarter get taken care of in the level increases already? I'm not convinced. Ability loss will likely be greater per level than the increases from class level gains. But I haven't played enough to really see it, so I don't really know. I like the co...

Re: Alternate physical levels

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. There aren't enough levels in the Beta to really see the long-term effects of Ability Score attrition, also not enough levels to test some sort of stat Increase. I do want to see the characters get stronger & smarter as they gain levels, and I'm not s...

Re: Halflings & 2 weapons

So you "can" have some fantastic Drizzt kind of guy killing two enemies at once. Maybe the off-hand can be used defensively in that it absorbs damage, either a flat rate or variable depending on the weapon. For example, you can use a dagger to absorb (or eliminate) up to 1d4+str+level in ...
