Re: The sales staff won't like my suggestion....

There's nothing inherently wrong with players gaining expertise in what their characters can do. Remembering that 24 on the magic missile chart is d6 missiles at 2d8+whatever does not hurt the wonder of the game. Players won't have that kind of memory until they've cast a lot of magic missiles. A wi...

Re: Cosmology & Setting

Instead of setting info, I'd like to see some charts a DM can use to create a town, a random NPC and of course random encounter tables . Um, that is setting info. Saying gryphons are randomly encountered in mountains means your setting's mountains have gryphons. Encounter tables should be customize...

Re: Rulebook efficiency: A pitch for using flowcharts

What rules are so confusing they need a flow chart? I can't believe this discussion is taking place on the forum for a game whose mantra (I thought) was KISS.

Re: Spellcraft Checks

I am not quoting the play test doc, but instead I am throwing ideas out there from my play test experience. I do not believe that a spell should randomly provide a permanent enchantment bonus to yourself or someone else. It just promotes a situation where someone just keeps casting a spell until th...

Re: Alignment & Clerics

The problem with alignment being so far removed from day-to-day player experience is you may as well not have it. It's like having a secret society of basket weavers. Who cares? I'd rather see something newish. I've seen D&D and WFRP. Maybe replace alignment with alliances/factions. A faction co...

Re: Alignment & Clerics

The problem with Moorcockian alignments is that just about everyone but 1 or 2 people in the whole campaign world are unaligned. Both Superman and Batman would be unaligned as neither would willfully fight for the lords of law or chaos. I always equate Moorcock's law with "the other side of Cth...

Re: Alignment & Clerics

For me, I like the absoluteness of good vs evil and law vs chaos. So give me the 9 alignments. It makes breaking and entering and mass murder easier to swallow. I get enough moral ambiguity in real life and don't need it in my RPGs.

Re: Clerics and the DCC

And finally, at the "test of faith" moment - like the streak you ended up on, where it was all failures and your PC was probably questioning if their deity had abandoned them - maybe there needs to be solid mechanical advice for acts to reverse that streak: * Sacrifice gold or baubles to ...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

I don't think DCCRPG is aiming at being a "draw people in the RPG world" kind of game. It's aimed at the long-time RPG player looking for something nostalgic yet still new. My attitude to DCCRPG has climbed and dropped and climbed and dropped. Some parts of it are extremely appealing and o...

Re: Counterspells ?

Re: partial action not fitting the rest of the initiative system. I think it's more about charging a reasonable cost for countermagic that doesn't penalize the caster or make it a really dumb choice. Re: Counterspells ?

I find it too fiddly. I don't accept the counterspell sticking around "forever". Second, how come countermagic is immune to countermagic? If you counter a spell and then attempt to counter a second spell, should your second counter be reduced by the amount you countered the first spell wit...

Re: Counterspells ?

@ jmucchiello: it's not exactly the same as readying an action... see my earlier posts; for DCCRPG my suggestion doesn't involve knowing the spell they are casting at all. Well, if DCCRPG uses d20 initiative, it should also use d20 Readying an Action. It doesn't matter that the "need to know t...

Re: Resurrection ?

I am for leaving it in the game. I know it is not appendix N... A single Level R caster (i.e. level 17 caster) is known in the world to be able to .... Plus... it takes a whole year to cast... So, given the three statements, why does it need to be in the book? Especially when spells in DCCRPG take ...

Re: Resurrection ?

Personally, I hope there are no rules whatsoever involving resurrection. DMs who want it can make up their own house rules to cover the EXACT methods of resurrection they want in their game without whiney players saying "but it's in the book" and DMs who don't want resurrection in the game...

Re: Appendix O?

China Mieville - 'Perdido Street Station' - weird and wonderful. This book is the only one of these I've read and I'd call it better than Lovecraft. But it is in no way Sword and Sorcery. Think of a Lord of the Rings where, after stringing you along for thousands of pages, all of the hobbits end up...

Re: Counterspells ?

...make a counterspell a direct penalty to the die roll... As for the 'backwards' chart -- I think personally I'd rather see something simpler, like, if you reduce your opponent's result down to x (zero?), then you get to control the spell, not the original caster! The power level of the spell woul...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?

So I looked at the preview at RPGNow. I think it works great in an anthology work which Dungeon Alphabet seems to be: a page of altars, a page of books, etc. But in a core game rules book? How many pages is the book going to be? If it's around 64 there's not enough room for a full RPG and 35%+ artwo...

Re: Counterspells ?

Actually, since we know spells have a chart, why not just extend the chart backward and make a counterspell a direct penalty to the die roll: Caster A's total magic bonus is +3 (however it is calculated based on level, spell level, color of his eyes, etc). Caster B's total magic bonus is +2. Caster A...

Did I mention that I love old-school art? Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG

I'm wondering in the System Shock idea would work better if it happened everywhere. See a fierce, dread-inspiring dragon, make a fear roll that could cause loss of action, panic, and/or loss of SS points. Same with demons and liches. This is so the scary creatures become scary again. This would mean...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG

I like the first post better than the most recent revision. The System Shock/Action Point concept really worked for me. What did not work was the massive damage rule. My suggestion is to go back to the original version and remove all reference to Massive Damage. That will make the System Shock/Death...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?

About the second: I think it won't be a problem to include 4 spells per page Looking at the table for Magic Missile, I'm thinking more like 2 spells per page I picked 3 spells per page and 10 spells/3 pages for a reason based on having release OGL stuff in the past. 4 is also possible but frankly I...
