Re: One or Two Page Character Sheet
I can't imagine an OD&D or B/X character sheet being more than half a page really. Especially if spells don't count. A 1e sheet could easily be a full page with NWPs and other UA artifacts.

Re: What is a "level"?
So take a tip from 4e and name the "5" levels. Instead of calling the levels, call them tiers. And then have levels between tiers: 1: Novice 2: Journeyman 3: Hero 4: Paragon 5: Master 6: Epic (and beyond...) At each tier you gain hit points, attack bonus, etc. And maybe break up each tier ...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Didn't I say this somewhere? Oh yes: [url=http://www.goodman-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=9507&p=33503#p33503]I did. I don't think the whole "just 5 levels" thing has been really figured out yet. Yes, you mentioned it first. I'd given it some thought and have come to agre...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Well, let's say I have two spells. One is Magic Missile. I need to roll over a 1 to cast it. And the results will allow me to reasonably (as in rolling a 10 or above) do up to 64 points of damage to up to 4 different targets. But I also have Scorching Ray. Which will allow me to do (with roughly th...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Take the Fighter. What do we know about him? Well, he gets an Action Die that goes up "each level". So 1st level is d3. 2nd level is d4. 3rd level d5. 4th level d6. 5th level d8. 6th level d10. That MDA thing is good right until 4th level with that progression. But it really gets whacky o...

Now, everyone needs to bug Zocchi and ask when he'll come out with a d0.goodmangames wrote:Argh!! I set myself up for this!!
But it shall be noted that the diceless mechanics require Zocchi non-dice.

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
And if the goal of Appendix N is to emulate the fiction of Appendix N, there needs to be a pulp dial. Something that allows characters to do something besides die and die some more. We've had lots of discussions about hit points, VP/WP, etc. But truth be told, there ain't a single Appendix N book I...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I think you are not taking one thing into account. Levels in 1e AD&D will not map directly to levels in DCC. 1e AD&D had 20-30 levels. DCC will have only 10. This basically means that every 1 level in DCC is worth 2-3 levels in AD&D, so you would have to adjust the levels down. A level ...

Re: Wizards versus Warriors. Can Balance be found in Appendi
I find the basis of the argument spurious. Heck, the books in Appendix N are made up. The author has total control of how powerful warriors are in comparison to the wizards and he doesn't have the fragile egos of players to placate when he makes one or the other stronger or weaker in comparison. Bes...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I think the real issue here is that 5th level is lower than the average level of the classic dungeons. G1-3, D1-3, S1-4, etc, most of those modules start at 8th level. So, this makes Hill Giants in DCC Epic. You can't have G1's steading sitting in your campaign world because each Giant (out of like ...

Re: Warriors and MDoA's
The target # is 3 or higher. So it get progressively easier for a Warrior to achieve a MDoA. 1. d3 - 33% chance 2. d4 - 50% chance etc... Too frequent for me. 3 on a d8 is 75%. That's only 6th level. Starts out too good and gets better real fast. I could be wrong though. Will have to see it in acti...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I'm now leaning toward keeping the core rulebook focused on levels 1-5, and saving levels 6-10 for one of the annuals. Please don't. Let us have "complete" rules for the core classes. I don't know how often you plan to release annuals, but it can be annoying if you have a party that can p...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Are you doing individual experience point progressions for the classes? And are you using 1e/2e style multiclassing or 3e style (or no style)? One thing I have missed in 3e is 1e/2e multiclassing.

Re: The forgotten class...
unless an adventure contains challenges in which a thief can shine, the thief doesn't feel very special. Especially compared to a wizard and warrior and cleric, all of whom have fun new mechanics! So it's exactly like old school D&D where the thief just sucked. Short of turning them into ninja,...

Re: Warriors and MDoA's
So does MDoA refer to the stunt or to the die? I'd have called the die: BAD. In 3e, you have a Base Attack Bonus, so the die would be your Base Attack Die. I'm not understanding the stunt system. If a 1st level fighter rolls a d3, what does he need to pull off a stunt? A 3 I suppose? That's 33%. So ...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I wonder if Joseph might consider a second volume, an Advanced DCC RPG in order to tackle that second market. This thought has crossed my mind several times. I also sometimes wonder why he didn't take the B/X or BECMI approach and split it up into increasing levels of power. Because he wants to sel...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
There is a lot of fun to be had from being able to drop a timestop and knock off a couple more 8th and 9th level spells (with metamagic) in epic level 3e. Getting to use Bigby's Crushing Hand or Meteor Swarm. They sat there in the Player's Handbook unused through most of 1e and 2e AD&D. Scry, Bu...

Re: In the rules?? "What is a RPG?"
'What is a RPG?' is a great example of what I feel can be expanded in more detail via a web presence. A short explanation would be a must (in my opinion) in the core book, but a more lengthly description with tons of examples could be online. I'd prefer an RPG were I occasionally read page 1 and fi...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
This strikes me as a very "Gygaxian" view. EGG wrote something along those lines in the 1e AD&D PHB. Balance does not come from a set of rules. Balance comes from a game that is DMed in a fair and even manner. Where do you think I stole it from? But I take it further by saying that ev...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
This is totally my opinion on this from reading the forums, etc... In 3e, the game plays really well until you hit level 12 or level 13. At that point, there are so many things that start to get out of whack that the game starts to get more unbalanced. Instead of trying to re-balance the entire gam...

In the rules?? "What is a RPG?"
From another thread we are wondering what there is room for in the rulebook so I'm curious with the DCC RPG waste space "What is a RPG?" "How to use dice?" "What does the DM do?" "What is a 'Dungeon'?" We all know this stuff. And DCC RPG is not really going to...

Re: Cosmology & Setting
The playtest file is around 300 pages in length and has no campaign information at all in it. Having not seen the playtest file I can only assume it's a Word file with a single 6"-6.5" column and 12 point fonts throughout. 3 or so of those pages can easily fit onto a normal RPG page. Of c...

Re: Rulebook efficiency: A pitch for using flowcharts
What rules are so confusing they need a flow chart? I can't believe this discussion is taking place on the forum for a game whose mantra (I thought) was KISS. Some people learn better (or faster) with visual aids. For those people something like this can be made available as a separate download. I ...
