Re: Appendix N Recommendations and Adventuring Parties

trancejeremy wrote:I just don't think adventure fiction works very well with groups.
Superhero groups are as close as you get.

And they don't map onto adventuring very well. Adventuring is pro-active: Let's go into the Tomb of Doom and find some loot. Superheroes are reactive: Doc Doom is doing what? Let's stop him.

Re: Kill the Cleric?

If you do domains in the 2e mode, you need more cleric spells to really differentiate the spell list by deity. In the KISS mode, I'd say that deity only affects the Anathema Turning ability and "might" restrict some spells (the whole fire gods don't create water, thing). Perhaps each spell...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

Sure, there are a good collection of roguish types in Appendix N but there's also a good collection of heroic fantasy where do-gooders save the day for little reward. I fail to understand how anyone could say doing heroic deeds is outside the "roots of D&D". That's the dilemma of tryi...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

What priest would take part in tomb robbing for example? One dedicated to a 'rival' god, if history is to be believed. Like recovering a relic for his church, or destroying one of the enemies. But people did worse things for their religion, than tomb robbing. And the cleric is a templar-like class,...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

What priest would take part in tomb robbing for example? IMO, the cleric and the paladin were the driving force behind pushing D&D from its roots of being a game about a band of roguish cutthroats to being a game of fantasy superheroes that spend their day rescuing villages from the Forces of E...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

In my experience, the best characters to "tut tut" the party are the barbarians: "That now we do it in Kralimoran, or Dark Steppes as you call it." Any "outsider" will do, but barbarians are always fun for that. "No, you must not take his (dead guy's) sword. He fou...

Re: Kill the Cleric?

What were the magic costs for Harold Shea and the Professor? What higher powers did they call on? None. Their magic was mathematically grounded. I'm not saying all Appendix N magic is the same. There's a trade off between the high fantasy of Appendix N and the sword & sorcery. For every Harold ...

Re: Planar Travel

Given the response here maybe I should pitch it elsewhere  What's been said can be taken a couple of ways. One is that people around here don't like planar travel in their games. Two is that nothing's come along to inspire them with the awesomeness of planar travel. I'd assume the latter. Or ...

Re: Encounter Levels and Random Encounters

Far more important for creating balanced encounters is having a good DM who knows what his players' characters can handle. And that holds true for just about all RPGs in existence. No RPG that I know of has a good "how to design an encounters" tool that works for below average game masters...

Joe, I think a lot of people are going to be very, very pleased to read this post. I know I am. :D And honestly, I think things like building keeps and facing off against patrons is perfect supplementary material... In my 30 years of playing D&D (damn, i'm getting old), I've never once played o...

I'm actually something of a fan of "your weapon does 1d6 damage" and leaving it at that. Games that feature guns, I don't care about the differences (and don't care about hearing people complain that the real world differences are not accurate/there at all). Games with pole-arms, swords, ...

I certainly hope 5-6 pages are spent on mundane equipment for this game. If the spells are illustrated, I hope the equipment page is too.

How about levels 1-7? Please. God. This. If nothing else. I suspect he can't as long as spells are one per page. Adding two levels increases the spell spaces requirements by 33% and monster space requirements by at least 28% (depending on the complexity of higher level monsters). Even if there are ...

Re: Porting Spellcasting to, say, Pathfinder?

Well, playing E6, you only have to convert cantrips to 3rd level spells so your task is already cut down to 1/3 of the spell list. Since you know what spells your players tend to memorize, just start converting those spells and some outlying spells rather than doing them all. You probably would tie ...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

I would rather see a 1-10 level range in one book if possible. I really would not be a fan of the first book having spells of levels 1-3... the second book having spell levels 4&5. Plus, what would really be in a second book? There are no feats... no skills... Joseph indicated earlier he wanted...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

And we haven't had any solid explanation for why that's so... other than "I think it will work better this way". Why? I'm guessing that the spell tables and crit tables take up a whole lot more space than they first expected and now they need to chop the game down to make it fit into the ...

Re: Rulebook efficiency: A pitch for using flowcharts

But what if viewing a flowchart makes the rules "make sense"? Even with 25+ years of computer programming I've never found flowcharts more sensible than a good outline list. YMMV. A flowchart can only handle so much detail before it gets bogged down. And a flowchart with only a couple dec...

2) Gandalf was never killed. He was cast down by the Balrog and his form was taken away. Gandalf was literally a Gawd... or demi-gawd technically. Not a PC, not a mortal, or even an immortal Elf... a gawd... one of the Maia. Gandalf's gawd status isn't really mentioned in LOTR. You to read the Silm...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3

The "recommended levels" were not originally a part of the standard cover layout. The monochrome modules, e.g., seldom mention them, and not generally as a numerical range. The monochrome G modules, e.g., all suggest "average level of 9th" (though holding the door open to charac...

There are places on the Internet where FTFY is always considered snarky, sarcastic or condescending (you idiot, I had to fix that for you). So be careful using it and don't assume it is always friendly.
