Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
Faster Hit Point Recovery Post-Encounter At the end of an encounter, a character recovers one-half of the hit points lost in the encounter after a five minute rest. Example: Mordrek the Fighter goes from 32 hit points to 18 in a fight with some Orcs. After the combat is over, Mordrek's hit points j...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
Mkay. So I've been doing some research, plugging away and trying to come up with some system that will meet the criteria I've set out for myself. I think the systems I've been trying to work out have been perceived as too complex because (A) I try to write them all up at once -- making them look mas...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I understand your reasons, I just don't think it's necessary. I just think hit points do the job as well as anything else and do it with less complexity. Other methods can do the job as effectively, but always at a cost. I prefer the KISS principle. I understand your point. My hope is to work out s...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I think these add unnecessary complication to gameplay. Fair enough. I agree. It reads more complicated than I'd like. I'm working on that. Thanks for the feedback. What's wrong with dying at zero hit points? Or even at -10? It's simple and does the job. Nothing is wrong with that. It is simple and...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I'm revisiting the older threads and going back over some of the other ideas from Hamakto, dkeester, mtnjeff, bholmes, myself and others in light of this System Shock thing. System Shock isn't far off from the "Death Saves" idea that had been discussed a couple months back. I'll work on si...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I still think that it would be simpler to use stamina as life points when you get to 0 hit points, thus hit points would be more of defense points and stamina long lasting damage to keep things as usual when you get to 0hp you roll a save vs death to see if you get unconscious or not I think that's...

Death & Dying in DCC RPG
A while back Joseph had made some comments about how he was concerned about the lethality of DCC. As a result, the forums have been a petri dish of ideas on the topic. These have included but have not been limited to: A Vitality/Wound point system ala Star Wars SAGA Using attribute damage to represe...

Re: Save or die
Death has to be part of the experience in DCC RPG. I agree with that. This solution is more workable than the wounds solution above. While the wounds system is nice, it is rough on an adventuring party when one player is removed from action for the adventure. Especially for those groups that do not...

Re: Save or die
Maybe we could introduce another mechanic: Save and Survive? If you're about to die (ie: brought below -10) you can save and just be Unconscious and Bleeding (ie: the Dying condition). You have X# rounds until you simply bleed out. Maybe 3? 1/Con bonus minimum 1? I like that. It's elegant and hits ...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
And on the topic of complete randomization of spells for a starting character...how about letting them select one. All the rest are random. This way they get "something" that they can use as their primary spell. Just a thought. I think that's a great idea. Easy to houserule but it's a gre...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
On the one hand, I can't think of a game where we didn't just start at high levels, where we've gone past level 7; or needed to go there, thus my home game's preference for E6. Mine too. But I'm only of one mind. I'd prefer to build BBEG's as their own thing. I never cared for 3e's NPC creation. An...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
Just make the wording ambiguous and you can have it both ways. Something like "sacrifice x number of hit points of blood". It doesn't say whose blood or even if you have to kill someone. If you're a nice wizard, you sacrifice a chicken or cut yourself. If you're a bad guy, you have a supp...

Re: One ruleset, many settings
So, the idea: would it be feasible to produce different setting books (perhaps one for each "source" of Appendix N) in a format similar to the old Greyhawk folio? Working on one right now. Granted it's not Newhon, Hyboria or the Young Kingdoms, but I'm thinking it will be familiar to most...

Re: Warrior mechanics
I am a fan of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and like how players can attempt manoeuvres like shield bash that with a single roll of the dice pool can determine hit or miss, if the character is stunned/rattled, if damage was dealt etc. There is a variety of outcomes that are possible with every move an...

Re: Warrior mechanics
The warrior mechanics had me worried me about this game but this thread has me convinced this will be my "new D&D" game. I just ordered a set of Zocchi dice after reading this. Definitely buying this game. I am a bit confused though about what happens when you want to do something tha...

Re: Save or die
Interesting concept. But I would rather have 2 ST for SoD effect to have a lesser effect than a fail and out. I don't think I mentioned it earlier and I apologize for my negligence on the matter. But I really like the 2 Saves idea on a Save or Die. Maybe include a lasting penalty for failing the fi...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
I have a small suggestion for addition to Spellburn. Give each entity a preferred attribute for Spellburn and allow any attribute to be used. Some demons might want a point of Luck, some celestial allies might want a point of Charisma (i.e. ritual scarification, a brand, or a specific tattoo), etc....

Re: Magic Items and DCC
The only problem with only taking Appendix N as a gospel viewpoint is... They are stories that have specific events and occurrences that first the story envisioned by the author. Everything in the story is put there by the author with a specific purpose in mind. Either the provide depth for the wor...

Re: Magic Items and DCC
To get away from the how much and what should be in the list... I would like to propose a couple of quick rules for magic items. These are proposed with the KISS principle in mind (not all my ideas follow that idea). Or maybe let DCC handle it in a way that is appropriate for Joseph's exploration f...

Re: Magic Items and DCC
We really do not know how the monsters are going to be developed in DCC RPG. Will you need magic weapons to hit a monster? If so, then yes you will need more common +1 weapons out there. Or different ways to kill a monster -- specific phases of the moon, rituals, pacts with demons, silver, iron, et...

Re: Save or die
The point that I was was trying to achieve earlier was to provide a slight alternative to SoD. Bridge the gap between OD&D and 3e (hate 4e's saves). Yes, they exist. Yes you have to fear them (i.e. do not just charge in at the Banshee w/out preparing). But a single random bad roll will not kill...

Re: Save or die
I can't help but think that it is not really death unless it is permanent. The ease of healing and resurrection in 3.x and 4.x make death a non-issue. I think it also makes the successes less valuable. The "the whole party almost died" scenario means much, much more when healing potions a...

Re: Save or die
Switching them wholly or majorly to DCCRPG is probably impossible -- I think an occasional 'change of pace' one- or two-shot is the best I can expect. But maybe when I hit them with a character death that they might not expect (not that I'll be gunning for them, per se) (or will I?) and then throw ...
