Re: Question on leveling and hit points...
A level-0 character has 1d4 Hit Points, so their maximum at that level is whatever was initially rolled, modified by any Stamina bonuses/penalties. The minimum is 1, however. Example: Pug Mucker has Stamina 8 (-1 modifier). The Player determines Pugmucker's hit points by rolling 1d4-1. He gets a 3, ...

Re: What'z your favorite Dwarf look?
As much as I loved the LotR trilogy (with a few irritations), I'm not going to see The Hobbit. The dwarf designs killed it for me (what with Mssrs "We're Short Elves Really" Fili and Kili, Mr "I've-Got-An-Axe-In-Me-'ead!" Bifur, Mr "Check-My-Freaky-Hairdo!" Nori, Mr &qu...

It's not that Elven Clerics were a mistake, but that Clerics and Paladins were a mistake regardless of race.

I got it direct from GG; so, it was actually sent to me a week or so before it arrived in the mail, winging its way over The Pond.

Re: How do you define min/max?
Your second paragraph is interesting, but I have to disagree. I don't think whether you are min-maxing depends on your group. If you play in a group of people who all mechanically optimize to a high degree, I think it would be accurate to call them all min-maxers. I don't think it makes a differenc...

Re: Tolkein's Elves and pointed ears
First link from a Google search of " tolkien elves ears pointed " gives you all the information you could ever want on the subject, including quotes from JRRT's letters. There's real debate on the issue, but most of it stems from: "I am afraid, if you will need drawings of hobbits in ...

Re: How do you define min/max?
There's an obvious difference between someone playing a character in-game according to how said character might actually develop (including the obvious fact that a character would want to win/not die), and someone who goes to pains to take only the most optimum choices/plays the numbers to maximize ...

Re: How do you define min/max?
...a paladin who wanted to fight with a pike so he could fight from the second rank in melees... That doesn't sound bad at all to me. Just have to make sure not all the fights are toe-to-toe slugfests. Throw in plenty of 'long-armed' creatures and things with ranged attacks, attacks from above (fly...

Re: How do you define min/max?
True, but in DCC, by the rules as written, Players *can* pick their character's Occupation.Raven_Crowking wrote:If each player was allowed to pick an occupation, there are some which obviously reinforce certain character classes (wizard's apprentice) and some few would pick (gong farmer).

Re: How do you define min/max?
I like the DCCRPG concept that you don't get to pick your background. Not true. Note that a character’s occupation need not be determined randomly. If a player has a strong sense of the character’s background, he should feel free to use it. Starting trained weapon and trade goods can be determined ...

Re: How do you define min/max?
We're not talking about "rolling a character" per se, we're talking about min-maxing in the general sense (not specifically as it relates to DCC), and random determination (by rolling) is something that tends to alleviate the problem to a notable degree. Also, something like a system-provi...

Re: How do you define min/max?
With all respect, Colin, I don't think that the desire to win at all costs is min/max-ing at all. Winning is being competitive (sometimes obsessively so) and can happen in any game system. I think perhaps I wasn't clear. In summation, my point is: 1) Some folks have an desire to win at all costs/av...

Re: How do you define min/max?
I remember arguing the point with a min-maxing player a few years ago. it went something like this: Me: Min-Maxing is the insecure need to *win* (or avoid losing, which is nearly the same thing), blah. Player: No, I min-max to ensure my character is very effective at their specific role and works we...

Re: How do you define min/max?
I define min/max as follows: the insecurities of a Player who thinks they have to *win* at roleplaying by ensuring their character is less likely to *lose*, typically by playing the numbers to ensure they have no weaknesses at all or pumping the character up in a key area to the serious detriment of...

Ditto. I'd be onboard for a belt buckle, definitely; not keen on geek tees (or tees featuring imagery at all, for that matter), but a belt buckle is just understated enough to appeal.Crimsontree wrote:E & H.

Re: Disappointed with the FLGS in regards to DCC RPG.
If someone has a truly FLGS, then that's absolutely fantastic, and I'm seriously jealous. But over the years, I've either experienced or come across so many tales of LGS woes, that the idea that they must be saved in blanket terms like some mythic Holy Grail, simply doesn't hold much water. If your ...
