Re: Grappling in DCC?

What I am saying is that any reference to MDoA and grappling needs to be removed from this thread. Or are we willing to say only Warriors can grapple? I do not think that people would want to go that far. I would honestly say that a Thief has more reason to grapple than a fighter if he is trying to...

Re: Reading Appendix N

I lay a challenge for you all: can you give me a top 3 books to give the Appendix N feel. To cut a long story short whilst I was serving Her Majesty in foreign climes my collection of books (rulebooks, gamebooks and novels etc) were deemed surplus to requirements... thus were donated to the charity...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?

Quoting myself  on using backgrounds instead of builds. Aragorn - a human fighter with the background 'woodsman' or 'scout'. So we know Aragorn is experienced at tracking, foraging etc and he can get a bonus or roll a better dice type when he draws on his background. Conan - he's a fighter who...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

He does punch the crap out of people all the time though, which is something that D&D rules (in all editions) have a real hard time simulating past first level or so due to ever escalating hit points. And it's here where I think MDA and an unarmed crits table would help out as you level up. I w...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?

Except for the influence of backgrounds, alignment and more importantly -the way the player plays the character - I would prefer to stick to the archetypes. Rather than have a totally balanced do-it-all character, I think a balanced party is a better ideal to aim for. If you want to play another cla...

No, I think you roll 3+ but the dice type changes as you level up: 3 on 1d3, 3-4 on 1d4 etc

Re: Reading Appendix N

Here are my latest few Appendix N reads. Merritt is always a treat to read: his style is very antiquated but the content is so strongly penetrated by subtle terror and dark longings. Yes, I agree. I've read Dwellers in the Mirage , a mix of lost world and cosmic horror. I particularly like the 3ft-...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC

So, that's a roundabout way of saying that I'm not sure how many monster books I'll publish. What do you guys think? Do people want a lot of monster books? Or, knowing that it's very simple to create new monsters, would you rather just create your own? I would rather have no generic monster books f...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?

Interesting, but I'll stick with my opinion over on the Races as Classes thread, why not use backgrounds instead of builds. Otherwise it's just layering on more crunch.

Re: Damage Reduction in DCC RPG

The additional damage reduction would almost guarantee that he wins the combat. Which would be appropriate for someone with far superior equipment. Even if he got lucky in combat, it would be a tough fight to win the battle. Those extra HP's from DR would be key in winning a fight. Just like in cla...

Re: Healing and clerics

If a character has a leg in a cast, surely the penalty from that crit would be rolling on a lesser dice type in subsequent combat until healed. No need for extra modifiers, this is not D&D, you could just use the dice.

Re: Grappling in DCC?

To be honest, will the MDoA just be a point of contention between the DM and players. What is the limit of actions? In my opinion, contention is a feature not a bug of an involved gaming group engaged in the moment. As long as the rulebook has a few examples, I think it's totally workable. The limi...

Re: Alignment and Religion

I recently read The Fallible Fiend , an Appendix N satire that uses the travels of a logical, courteous, philosophical demon called Zdim amongst fantasy human society to poke fun at modern governance. It's interesting to try to apply alignments to the characters and societies, such as the moralistic...

Re: Grappling in DCC?

And of course Conan, presumably being a fighter, might be able to do something similar and/or counter that technique simply by virtue of the freeform stunt capability afforded to him by his additional attack die. (I didn't run a fighter in the playtest, so I don't remember what this ability is call...

Re: Warrior mechanics

As I pointed out in an earlier thread, you start to skew the game if you do what you are talking about. I could be wrong but I think he's meaning to skew it so classes with improved two-weapon fighting ability have a better chance of a crit, whereas fighters with 17 or less Agility have to roll the...

Re: Reading Appendix N

From Appendix N, I've just read The Face In The Frost by John Bellairs - a delightfully odd mix of whimsy and lurking menace. What struck me is that the DCC approach to spellslinging is a great way to emulate the unpredictability, power and mystery of magic in the book. Even though Prospero is an ex...

Re: Warrior mechanics

My two-weapon mechanic makes use of funky dice. It's contingent on Agility score but, in short, the two-weapon warrior will generally be rolling d16+d14, or perhaps d20+d16, rather than two d20's. Of course they apply the same attack modifier to it, instead of a -4 to the first / -6 to the second l...

Re: DCCRPG Playtest at GenghisCon 2011

I agree with Fullerton, it's not about 'career' dungeoneers, more about the unpredictable, so I have no problem with high stakes spell use - after all, you could roll a Critical Success and save the day for the party. Just don't rely on using your favourite spell all the time (which is what spoils l...

Re: Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?

So, I am guessing that the ethos of the game is going to be much the same as the modules. What about the ethos of the modules put you off of it in the past? It was that blurb, I read it and my interest waned. I expect a bit of ambition from published products rather than what it seemed to be about,...

Will the ethos of new modules differ from old DCCs?

Remember the good old days, when adventures were underground, NPCs were there to be killed, and the finale of every dungeon was the dragon on the 20th level? Those days are back. Dungeon Crawl Classics don't waste your time with long-winded speeches, weird campaign settings, or NPCs who aren't mean...

Why not base XP on actual play rather than the results?... XP could be measured in "adventures" or "quests" rather than points. This is how Forward To Adventure ! deals with advancement, it works better for modules and scenarios compared to sandboxes. The upside is the lack of b...
