Re: In the rules?? "What is a RPG?"
This can even be expanded out to spells. Instead of wasting one page per spell in the book, you use smaller print to get more in the book and have a downloadable link for spells off the website. Smaller print makes rulebooks harder to consult in play ( Swords & Wizardry Complete anyone ?). I do...

Re: Cosmology & Setting
Pathfinder? The Core book doesn't have a specific setting info any more than the 3.x core books. What I meant was that after the Core book - there was the wave of 'one setting that does a bit of everything' - Golarian uber alles ! I would rather have lots of smaller settings for the characters to a...

Re: Cosmology & Setting
I think there should be NO setting information in the main rulebook. Totally agree with Geoffrey. Don't create a canon setting by sticking it in the rulebook. I think that would totally go against the breadth covered by Appendix N. I think setting should be left to DMs, as well as implied through t...

Re: Alignment & Clerics
Lawful, Chaotic, Good, Evil, and Unaligned (I like the suggestion to change Neutral to Unaligned) Each character has a Primary alignment that is the most important alignment to them and their outlook on life. Secondary alignment is something that can change over time or by situation. Example: For s...

Resurrection ?
How is this doing to be handled, is it a ritual or a spell (maybe with reincarnation and undeath as possible spell failures), is it even included in the rules or something more complex like the journey back in Jack of Shadows ?

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
How has everyone else's attitudes towards the game changed since Jan. 3rd? I liked the initial rundown of ideas but it was the follow-up posts and playtest reports that led me to pre-order it. Also, the buzz on the forum reminds me of the early days of Swords & Wizardry , loads of ideas bouncin...

No relation to Appendix N bar the word 'Conan' but y'know in the film Conan the Destroyer - in the tomb when the two wizards match magics against each other - I'd like the ability to do similar in DCC rpg.

Re: Counterspells ?
Because if you roll is too low, you lose the spell. If you start to do countering rolls, you can easily strip a caster of their memorized spells (i.e. 4-6 spells memorized). But the countercaster is also penalizing his following spell rolls, making himself equally vulnerable to spell failure, makin...

Re: Counterspells ?
What if to counterspell, you as the counterer chose a die size to reduce your opponent's spell check by, and you yourself took that same die size as a penalty on your next casting? Counterspelled multiple spells before your turn? Your next spell is not going to go well, is it? I like that a lot. I'...

Counterspells ?
Is there going to be the ability to counterspell in DCC (or just Dispel Magic) ? And if it goes haywire, what would be the consequences: - adding 'fuel to the fire' - increasing the effect/duration/range of the spell to be countered - mutating the spell -adding some weird effect to it - creating a t...

Re: questions about combat
I use 10' roll 1d10, 20' roll 2d10 etc, over 50' = dead but I allow the pious who call on their god or demon patron a Level x 10% chance of divine intervention to save them. Mind, I haven't ever told the players about that.

Re: Professions and Races
From what's been said on previous threads I think both professions and races are covered by background. An Elf in a playtest was able to see 60' in the dark and wasn't affected by sleep and charm. I believe barbarian is more of a background than a class, and such things as nomad, or noble are easily...

Re: Appendix O?
Another question, and in a way a stupid one ... with the books mentioned in this thread, how much do they resemble "Appendix N" books and how much are they "just darned good fantasy" books? I picked these novels because most of them reminded me of the spirit/tone/creativity of s...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
Why not? Something like: Natural 1: Spell takes effect on random creature or area. 1-11: Lost. Failure. 12-13: Spell Does minimum possible damage. 14-17: Spell has standard effect. 18-19: Increase damage dice by one step. 20-23: Increase aoe or targets affected by 50% 24-27: Increase range by 50%. ...

*applause* YES !Hamel™ wrote:To avoid an extra roll, you could always look at the damage dice itself: with an even result the shield works, with an odd it works not.
That's your 50%, simple and clear.

30-31: These missiles have limited ability to defy magic shield and other protections; compare this spell check against the spell check used to create the magic shield. If the magic missile check is higher, the magic shield has only a 50% chance of absorbing the missiles (roll individually for each...

Re: Magic Items and DCC
I think that the characters need not start out as heroic in terms of stats/skills/equipment etc - it's how the player plays them and what fate (the dice) decides that brings out the heroism. At higher levels, yes, magic items may come into play more but that's because they are damn costly (and I don...

Re: Save or die
The only thing I would add to a Save or Die situation is that if your character does die, you get a Last Gasp maneuver... A chance to do something with the death that could aid your party. Giant tentacle dragging you down into a vast crevasse, never to be heard from again? There's a chance you coul...

Re: Save or die
'It plays like a 1970s OD&D session.' Therefore Save or Die is de rigeur, an absolute must. I sometimes leave some clues but not always, sometimes a player has to instinctively know that putting their head into the stone demon's maw on an ill-starred night is a bad idea. Otherwise it's bring on ...

Re: Warrior mechanics
Another thought: maybe space would be better served with more magic items and monsters than rules. Also spells (hoping that wizards can still collect spells on the fly, like in 3e, and add them to their books). My concern is that I would rather have tables for generating magic items than a shopping...

Re: Alignment and Religion
The way I look at alignment in DCC RPG, it's less about the character's personality and more about what supernatural forces the character serves. This is how I see Alignment. A Neutral is just someone who hasn't had (or chosen) to take sides yet, but it's only a matter of time. This way there is no...

Re: Class/Alignment combo mechanics?
As for clerics, their alignment determines weapon choice and what they can turn. Clerics can turn unholy creatures, not just un-dead, and the definition of "unholy" is defined by, of course, what their deity considers holy. Yes, your lawful cleric can turn a basilisk... Can elves and faer...
