Re: Mystery Map Adventure Design Competition

If you can afford the printing (and the extra payment to the writer/designers) for the Free RPG, it would be cool to put the alternate maps, as is (rough as they may be) with the outlines on the back in an appendix. I'm thinking you only need 2 or 3 of the alternatives to show the range of what was ...

Re: D5 kind of sucks.

One thing I've found is that dropping it rather than throwing it with any sort of horizontal force seems to make the results more equitable. (I stress the word seems because it is a purely anecdotal observation) Also, to gain confidence in it's fairness, you could always test it using this method: ...

Re: Hit points: What are they?

If victorious, the HP loss indicates how tough of a fight it was on him, and how many days of "natural" recovery he'll need to be back to his very best: fresh and ready. This loses me when you have over 20 hp. I can't imagine it taking weeks to get back to you very best after a single fig...

Here's a chit sheet for the "funny dice disinclined" http://www.mediafire.com/?lt6b1p4t23y4q6l For those of you too young to recall the 20th century, here's how it works: 1. Download it. 2. Print it on card stock 3. Cut out the numbers you need 4. Put the chits in a "cup" (A cup ...

Re: Hit points: What are they?

I've thought about assuming the the upper half of the hit point total equates to being fatigued while the lower half of the hit point represents actual physical damage. As such, characters only slightly (less than 50% wounded) might heal with just a few minutes rest, but anyone more than 50% would ...

Re: Level Cap

10th Level = win the game, establish a Hold and "retire" to NPC status. It has always been that way for me, and will continue to be that, no matter what supplements to it are provided. Started playing in '83. Never had any fun (as judge or player) above 10. Way more fun to see my "old...

Re: 0-Level Character Generator

The only drawback to this is its awesomeness. Seriously, I can't tell you how tempted I am to generate multiple pages of this...initially just to see what it comes up with...slowly tempting me to start "picking" sets that would be "balanced" or "suitable" for funnelling...

Re: Dice...

The sticky is great: I might add that you can go old school seat of the pants, and put 14 chits in a cup. Some of the old chit-based games, as well as "funny" dice games, when they ran short of stock, threw in a cardboard panel of numbered chits for random number generation. This is very e...

Re: Armor

Some of the most fun I ever had playing an RPG is when I had a vulnerable character going "above" his level, and devising ways to survive. As we have no clue how the XP system works, we have no way of knowing if those 0-level character can ever catch up. If xp requires "significant&q...

Re: 0 lvl to lvl 1 Transition/Options - Thoughts?

Luke went from level - 0 farmhand to level - 1 cleric after a little adventure on something called Escape the Death Star. "Suddenly" all the little things he hadn't noticed while toiling on the moisture farm - his dreams of piloting, odd family stories, disturbing thoughts of his father's ...

Re: Level 10+

I don't envision any pcs surviving to level 10 very often. If they do, I think it would be time for the pc and player to separate, allowing the player to become a renowned NPC in the area, probably holding a keep, castle or tower. At that level, you have the power to send someone else into the dunge...

Re: Un-dead vs. Undead nitpick

It amuses me that RPG characters in quasi-medieval settings refer so frequently to the "undead" as unholy, decrepit monsters when the term, in an actual late medieval setting, would have merely been reference to a lively neighbor! Well, it's only a quasi -medieval setting. Also most of us...

Re: Un-dead vs. Undead nitpick

Just for interest, I believe that the term "undead" and its definition was coined by Bram Stoker. The Dead Un-Dead and The Un-Dead were two of the titles he considered for a little book that eventually saw publication as Dracula . Well, technically, the word "undead" has been aro...

Re: Armor

Changing the dwarf xp chart is a via solution, too. :) This is probably where I'd go with this. And I agree about the funnel. Not every character is going to go through it. If you've got a group at 4th or 5th level and one of them dies, I doubt it's going to be standard operating procedure for a pl...

Re: Armor

Okay, I'm slow. I don't understand why someone would want to play this particular game without the funnel. That's kind of like playing Space Hulk without using overwatch rules - it would rob the rule set of one of its most basic (and delightful) functions. Don't know the reference. Sometimes, you w...

Elf twins for the win - correct me if I'm reading it wrong, but did they survive this because they avoided a lot of danger? I'd be curious to see their XP relative to the other survivors. Elves scored some kills and avoided different hits thanks to a bite and flee strategy while battling with gobli...

Re: Is corruption meant to be permanent?

Just a random observation: the new Camelot series features two sorcerers, Merlin and Morgan Pendragon, both at differing levels (Morgan is probably level 2 or 3, mostly uses magic for shapeshifting and doppleganging peoples lives to shards. Merlin is much, much higher than that - can shapeshift and ...

I was going to work on one (I own the savage worlds customizable screen as well), but after reading harley's tips & tricks post, I think I'm going to play without a screen. There is an adversarial aspect to the DM screen that I've long wanted to try to do away with, and I think now is my chance...

But it might be in a "variant rules" section. NOOOooo. Variant rules in the core book is a bad idea - let people houserule it themselves if they want but maintain the core as definitive. I think this rule is the only one that doesn't boost the dwarf over the warrior or involve more calcul...

Esoteric observation: This is the first ruleset that I have read that seems as if it would be equally suited for playing in a Tumithak -style setting and, say, The Abominations of Yondo ... To understate it horribly, that's a very neat trick. Another thing: What is shocking to me is how many "s...

Re: Warrior titles.

In practice, achieving such a feat of renown such as killing 1000 orcs would translate directly to being made chieftain. Most of those 1000 orcs were killed in the Great Tomb of Molydbu. Is anyone going to know YOU killed 1000 orcs? But every 5th level neutral warrior is a chieftain? How many chief...
