Re: Homebrew Spells and Conversions
At any rate, here are a few more spells I've converted from Pathfinder, which can be found on my resources page: DCC Resources Page Burning Hands (wizard 1) Phandaal's Mantle of Stealth (Invisibility) (wizard 2) Fireball (wizard 3) Interesting - good stuff, my version of Invisibility is a lot less ...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
I see no reason why the cascading effect and the 'pick one stat to try to roll over on 3d6 after level up' can't work together.smathis wrote:Haven't we learned anything from what happened to D&D?

Re: Dumb idea: Two types of arcane magic
I'd rather DCC reins in the skipping fireballs: - good guys make the most out of less-flashy spells like cantrip and mend. - bad guys go for powerful spells that require dark patrons, corruption, sacrifices. The sacrifice the good wizard makes is renouncing the temption of all that power, in return ...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Just throwing ideas out there, but wizards could be kickass ranged fighters topped off with the ability to cast magic. Why not play an elf then? With wizards as xbow wielding dart throwing ranger types they're be no need for warriors except in melee. I don't see this type of wizard in Appendix N. M...

Re: what game is most like the DCC RPG?
At '0'-Level I'd say the game that feels the nearest is High Quality Role Playing or playing 'Thralls' as outlined in Knockspell magazine issue 1.what game is most like the DCC RPG?

Re: Alignment and Spell Choice
Perhaps there should be chaotic, neutral, and lawful spells. If you share their alignment, you get a d3 bonus to spell fumbles, if not, a d3 penalty. I'm probably going to try a houserule like this because I see some Appendix N wizards as specialists such as Necromancers, Seers, Summoners rather th...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
What if wizards gained some abilities with class levels out side of the spells? If these abilities automatically work and ever ready to use I would find them too unbalancing. The wizard/elf has enough power as it is. I'm hoping the rest of the high-level spells are not as videogamey as Bouncy Fireb...

Re: Homebrew Spells and Conversions
Comprehend Languages affects the caster, but I assume your Obscure Languages affects another person/other people instead ? Else it would be a bit useless. Same with Butter Fingers and Pilfer Voice. Cloud of Pure Air - maybe this could be Bubble of Air instead so you could use it as a Water Breathin...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
I think that would be a thematic and interesting system. Yes, I agree. As I said in the other spell thread I have no problem with there being no spell levels as long as we use corruption and the scalable range of the spell to limit it being comfortable for lower level casters to pull off extreme hi...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
One game element that I dislike, which is well highlighted by Luck, is the cascading effect of having a stat go down in value. Actually I like this cascading effect, I think dropping the stat but keeping the modifier the same would be even harder to explain to players 'yeh he has Str 18 and +3 mod,...

Re: Options for non-mages
Yeah, no. It's unfortunate that Wizards (and Elves) only have access to 716 spells. Aren't 716 enough ? The more spells - the more get unused - I see this with feats in 3.5/Pathfinder - players rely on the same old tactics, their optimized chain of feats, otherwise it slows the game to a crawl as t...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
With the skipping fireball - can the 3rd target be the same as the 1st target, to allow for the 'pinball richochet in a small enclosed area ' effect ?
1st target : Evil Bob
2nd target: Wall
3rd target: Evil Bob
4th target: Ceiling
etc
Or can each target only be struck once by the fireball ?

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
you don't get to pick spells at level 1 (you randomly pick them) I actually think that the 'pick 1/2 your spells if the initial 4 are useless' guidance in the picking and rolling section on page 100 will come into play quite a lot - as players will argue their way into getting the spells they want.

Re: Halflings & 2 weapons
I'm curious as to why halflings are masters of 2-handed fighting. Is Belkar from Order of the Stick the new halfling archetype? Is the dual-wielding halfling from TSR's Monster Cards more influential than I suspect? What's the going on here? It's from that passage in The Hobbit where Bilbo goes buc...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
The 1-15 Lost, failure at the top confirms a lot of details about what spell level does and how redundant it is. No, spell level still regulates which spells the wizard has access to - so he's only able to cast Fireball at 5th Level - even though with a bit of spellburn and a lucky halfling, he cou...

Thanks Finarvyn :) that's really going to be useful. Now we have two example for offensive spells, like Magic Missile & Fireball. Creating something stronger or in between the two won't be that hard. You have Scorching Ray too, from the playtests: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xJgFS0Mxruc...

Re: "Limiting" Corruption
I think that any other person in the realm will hunt him down as a minion of evil (yes, in a fantasy medieval cliché i expect people to associate ugly with evil!) and eventually put an end to his corrupted existence. And this is why wizards prize spells like Charm Person and Polymorph, they can def...

Re: From Zero to Gonzo in 10 Levels
Also, there is no Save against Magic Missile. I cannot decide whether I love the sheer gonzo of this spell (especially the Dambuster style skipping effect and the singularity manifestation) or whether it confirms my fears for the caster as one-man-army, and whether that matters :? That line makes at...

Bards, Warlords and Burning Personality.
I was trying out some funky dice mass combat ideas and thought about Morale and leadership, then it struck me, how about a General/King/Chieftain being able to burn Personality to inspire his men, effecting a decisive roll. .....and Bards - working their audience, maybe they get to burn Personality ...

Re: Luck
I totally disagree - you'd lose the flavour completely and make the thief ordinary. I want Luck to be changeable and risky to rely on. I want players to use it to attempt the audacious, (especially thieves) and don't want it nailed down as a constant stat. That would suck. Other games do that.

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Marv, I think Fireball and Fly would be good choices to have a look at - even though I'd rather they weren't in the core rules. Fireball because we can then see how it scales as a combat spell in comparison to Magic Missile. How wide is the area of effect at higher rolls ? Fly is one of the module-b...

Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?
It seems the majority of playtesting has involved one-shot sessions and module play whicch allows players to use spellburning, burn luck etc to the max without fear of long-term consequences. With a longer time scale the game may take on a different tone e.g. with the rules for Corruption, playing a...
