Re: Kill the Cleric?
indeed the "cleric" should feel a little different than a monotheistic magician in armor.... I like the idea of having the various gods bestow gifts to cultist and favored ones... in particular a Wizard could be bestowed a spell a Warrior a special attack and a Thief a special ability... o...

Re: Clerics and the DCC
Some possible solution to the problems above 1) infinite healing then person healed must save with no effect on a failure (unless some sort of sacrifice to the god is done?) and if a 1 is rolled the god is offended and put a geas/quest on the character If one want to get really obsessive on this the...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I think the solution to making 1st level characters more survivable is to give them more hit points out of the gate, not a one-time bonus that increases their hit points across the board. Something along the lines of characters starting out with Stamina and then just getting a flat bonus each level...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I see that you changed the massive wound (I was going to point out the problem of low level characters :)), back to it, the big problem of wound/vitality is that it changes the game the point is: if I give stamina points to characters how should (if I should) treat monsters? should I give them a boo...

Re: Death & Dying in DCC RPG
I still think that it would be simpler to use stamina as life points when you get to 0 hit points, thus hit points would be more of defense points and stamina long lasting damage
to keep things as usual when you get to 0hp you roll a save vs death to see if you get unconscious or not

GREAT STUFF
ps: I would not use Harold Shea as an example, his problems come from trying to use decimal numbers instead of "sets" he was trying to think the number 1 instead of the set of 1, when he get this trick down he have no more problems

Re: Handling skill check
thanks all for the feedback, to clarify I dream of a skill system similar to the old Saving Throw table (that kept bonus crawl in check well enough, event my 15th level mage/fighter kept fearing ST with all the bonus he could muster) I subscribe to all of you that say that the number must be kept in...

Re: The DCC RPG and Spellslinging
Fabio, these are great ideas and along the same ideas as what I've been playing with. snip Where I'm going with the action die right now is exactly that: it's a second action, as dictated by class, that starts at a lower die (with the same bonus) and progressively goes higher with levels. So a wiza...

Re: Handling skill check
on skills one thing I have in mind since the old days is if my combat skill is tied to my level/class combination why not skills? obviously there should be 3-5 very broad skills (say Forester, Knowledge, Social) that are differently tied to the level/class of characters to put it into 3e terms Range...

Re: The DCC RPG and Spellslinging
A few more though on the matter 1) Spellsinging failure consequences: Forgetting the spell OR lowering the die for that spell ? reading of the spellburn mechanic I get that in fact you never really forget a spell (since you can use spellburn to try spellslinging it), so why don't take a different ro...

Re: Ability Scores
On life/hit points a simpler approach could be humanoid get 20 life points (monster get more based on size/level/whatever) hit points are normal (and are more adrenaline/fatigue/training) when you get to 0 hp you start losing life points (you can also lose 1+bp when you are hit by a critical) bp 16-...

Re: Ability Scores
if stat don't go up (and don't need to go up) we can live also with 3e progression
items: absolutely fixed bonus (Girdle of Fire Giant Strenght!)
races: get some special ability and bonus but not stat increase (it's much more interesting)

Re: Challenging the stereotype
Just a guess but maybe this differentiation is acheived through allocating different dice to different classes/levels for STs ? could be, but still... since there are some overlapping areas in the 5 ST you can make more differentiations e.g. PPD vs PP, RSW vs Spell or vs BW? probably you are going ...

Re: Challenging the stereotype
When I first saw the 3E 3-save system I hated it becasue it wasn't like the one I had been using, but as time has passed I like it more and more. Now I use it in my OD&D games. 1. Instead of giving specific categories, the 3-save system is more general and this seems more useful. Sometimes I'd ...

Re: Challenging the stereotype
I believe that they've already confirmed that iterative attacks and the 3 saving throws will be in the game. I remembered 3 ST and was not sure on iterative attacks (I read on the mule abides of the use d20/d16 to use iterative attacks instead fo different rolls), but it seemed a good place to put ...

Re: Challenging the stereotype
maybe it would be clearer to say that it's based on d20 btw there are indeed a few things of 3ed that should be kept out of the DCC 1) iterative attacks 2) dual*multi-classing like there is no tomorrow 3) only 3 saving throws (this sound deeply wrong on so many levels....) 4) feats 5) skill points 6...

Re: The DCC RPG and Spellslinging
My favorite conception of a fantasy game world is exactly this. If a wizard were to walk into town -- and people discovered he was a wizard -- he might be run out of town (or worse) by afeared and angry villagers, or they might all keep their eyes on him, suspicious, wary, afraid they might do the ...
