Goodman Games 5E Open Call Submission Guidelines

Goodman Games, your source for adventures, is looking to expand its 5E product line in 2021 and beyond. But for that, we need reliable, professional, 5E-savvy contributors. Familiarity with old school (original edition, B/X, 1E) RPGs is highly desirable, as that style fits the theme of our 5E product line. Be sure you are familiar with our existing 5E product lines, Fifth Edition Fantasy (FEF) and Original Adventures Reincarnated (OAR). We are looking for:

  • 5E playtesting groups
  • 5E content editors
  • 5E content writers

Welcome to the 2020 Goodman Games 5E Open Call! The Goodman Games 5E Design Team looks forward to reviewing your submissions. Please read the guidelines below for the role you are responding to, and put that role in the subject line when you email the submission. All submissions must be sent to info@goodman-games.com by 12:00 midnight EST on November 8, 2020. We will not consider any submissions after that deadline. Please only send one submission per role. All submission must be in MS Word (.doc or .docx).

5E Playtesting Groups

Submit a one-page (500 words maximum) letter describing your experience as a Game Master. How long have you been playing and gamemastering D&D, and specifically how much experience do you have with 5E. Tell us about the experience of your players and how frequently you meet to play. How much time can you dedicate to playtesting 5E material for Goodman Games (1/month, for example). Previous playtesting credit is not required, but preferred. Be sure to include your full name and contact information (address, email, and phone number) in your letter.

Selected 5E playtesting groups will be expected to complete playtesting duties by an agreed-on date and fill out standardized forms summarizing the playtest session(s). Communication between the playtest group and the Goodman Games 5E design team is crucial for this role.

Be sure to include 5E Open Call Playtesting Group in the subject line of your email submission.

5E Content Editors

Submit a one-page letter/bibliography (500 words maximum). Please include your full contact information (home address, email, phone number) in your letter. This is your chance to sell us on your experience, and passion for all things 5E related, plus discuss your background playing RPGs.

Submit a one to two-page sample (750 words maximum) of 5E content that you have edited. The type of content (a monster, or NPC stat box, or an encounter) and the format isn’t important. We just want to get a feel for your editing experience and knowledge of the 5E ruleset.

Be sure to include 5E Open Call Editor in the subject line of your email submission.

5E Content Writers

Submit a one-page letter/bibliography (500 words maximum). Please include your full contact information (home address, email, phone number) in your letter. This is your chance to sell us on your experience as a 5E writer, and passion for all things 5E related, especially if your published writing credits are minimal. This is also a good place to discuss your background playing RPGs.

Submit a one to two-page sample (750 words maximum) of 5E writing. The type of content (a monster, or NPC stat box, or an encounter) and the format isn’t important. We just want to get a feel for your writing experience and knowledge of the 5E ruleset. Creativity for this section is a plus, but the goal of this sample is to relay your 5E aptitude to the design team.

Please do not send us an entire book or a longer document! We anticipate an active response to this open call, and do not have the bandwidth to review longer samples. If we are interested in your samples, we will reach out to you for a larger sample (if required), and instructions on the next phase of the open call.

Be sure to include 5E Open Call Writer in the subject line of your email submission.

Thank you for your time. We look forward to reviewing your submission. We anticipate selecting several individuals for the roles of editor and writer to move onto the next stage of this open call. That stage will include the a very short 5E design or editing assignment with specific Goodman Games formatting and a specific deadline.

Good luck to all those who decide to send in a submission.
