The Jerry Stefek Memorial Crawl for the Cure 2019 (Inaugural)

Friday, November 1, 2019 – 9 AM – 7 PM CDT
Gamehole Con 7, Alliant Energy Convention Center, Madison, WI

Would you like to have fun in a great Dungeon Crawl Classics event, and help support the American Cancer Society at the same time? A DCC funnel tournament is being held on Friday, Nov. 1, at Gamehole Con, and you are invited to join! Named after a wonderful gamer whose life was claimed by cancer, the Jerry Stefek Memorial Crawl for the Cure runs all day on Friday, Nov. 1. It’s a DCC funnel tournament that costs only $4 to join, and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Read on to find out how to play and how you can contribute!

In December 2018, the gaming community tragically lost Jerry Stefek to cancer. Jerry was an avid old-school gamer, history buff, friend, loving husband, and father. His home was the nexus of friendship for decades. Both Jerry and his dearly departed wife MaryAnn were kind and generous to a fault; they not only hosted countless gatherings, but they also supported a number of those in their circle during difficult times.

A gamer with a heart of gold, Jerry’s buddies of many years have fond memories of his playstyle. A good friend paid his dues the first-night meeting Jerry; the player rolled up a 3rd Ed D&D character. The new thief scouted ahead and, without a die roll to be had, found himself in the clutches of zombies. In a matter-of-fact way, Jerry said, “You have been executed,” which then became a comedic phrase throughout their gaming lifetime. His judging style was an extension of his hilarious creativity and his friends loved playing in his games and alongside Jerry’s infamous villainous characters.

In a packed hall at his memorial service in January 2019, all of Jerry’s worlds converged to celebrate, tell stories of all his good works and pay respects to someone who gave so much to the people he loved. His friends found a loving, unparalleled generosity in this unassuming man who was in truth a hero of incredible proportions.

Jerry’s kindness inspired us to run the Jerry Stefek Memorial Crawl for the Cure at Gamehole Con in Madison, WI on Friday, November 1st from 9 AM to 7 PM CDT. We will run David Baity’s awesome Carnival of the Damned by Purple Sorcerer Games as a 0-level funnel tournament.  All proceeds collected from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society, in Jerry’s honor.

Game entry:

In this unticketed event, with your $4 donation, you will receive an awesome entry token featuring original Doug Kovacs artwork!  Use this token to play at the table whenever there is a space available throughout the day; in true funnel fashion, the GM will be working hard to make the players earn their victories! The more encounters your characters survive, the more stamps you’ll get on your current 0-level character card.

Prizes:

  • 1st prize – The character with the most survived encounters will be crowned King or Queen of the Carnival and take home a DCC RPG Foil Egyptian Lich Cover Rulebook! (Along with some royal swag to march around Gamehole signifying your rule!)
  • 2nd prize –  a signed copy of The Carnival of the Damned and an original piece of artwork from The Carnival of the Damned!
  • 3rd Prize – a signed copy of the Sunken City Omnibus!
  • Runners up: 2 signed copies of Carnival of the Damned, an awesome Dark Trails t-shirt with the Sanjulian cover artwork!

See the Crawl for the Cure website for more information. Prizes will be awarded after the event.

How will you turn the tables?

That is some chin-drooling loot! How do I enhance my chances to get these awesome items, you ask?  The gods of Charity have favors to bestow on their faithful! We will post levels of donation-altering destiny at the gaming table–and beyond–for your coin to influence effects in the game.

Need a boon to save your bacon? Waiting in line impatiently and need to get your peasant into the battle?

What better way to get a few seats at the table than pooling some money in line to cause a Clown Apocalypse? Barter with the Judge with your American Cancer Society donation dollars to slick the rails for your character or slide somebody off the table seat – the choice is yours! (See Crawl for the Cure for suggested donation levels)

Add chaos from afar, then sit back and watch! Bwahahahaha…

Can’t be at Gamehole Con and want to make a difference at home? We’ll be live streaming the entire event on the DCC Mayhem Twitch channel and giving away two PDF adventures hourly – one from Goodman Games and one from Purple Sorcerer Games – to online donors through the American Cancer Society supported Memorial Crowdrise page! Join the fun and make a difference in cancer patients’ lives with your invaluable support!

The American Cancer Society will use the money we raise from this event to further its mission to make the world a place free of cancer.  Your donations go towards funding research, prevention, and providing patients support. You’ll always have a successful MIGHTY DEED when you help us support ACS! We hope to see you there, crawlers!

A very special thanks to all the generous folks making this a possibility: Goodman Games, David Baity (adventure author and proprietor of Stiff Whiskers Press), Jon Marr and Purple Sorcerer Games, and Doug Kovacs for his awesome donated original artwork for the entry token! Very special thanks to Edwin Nagy, Sean Murphy, and David Clarkson – we stand on the shoulders of demi-gods! Their pioneering in the science of RPG charity gaming for Extra Life is the reason this exists! Find more info about their work on the Crawl for the Cure website!
