Except for illustrative elements within my map, I really don't do much illustration. Here's an example I'm using for an extended project of the previous map "Orc Raids of 692". Its part "tongue and cheek" Children's Book, which will become the prequel of a 1st level Pathfinder adventure I'm doing based on the poem's storyline.

Anyway, here's a proposed cover design. Note the text on this actually focuses on its use as part of the December Challenge at the Cartographers' Guild. I plan to change the wording specifically for the adventure soon. For now, this is what it looks like...

Working on a set of maps or an upcoming publication for D&D 4e with Johnn Four or Roleplaying Tips Newsletter, a Rogues Resource that will focus on three (plus one) maps of mine for varying levels of rogues in 4e gameplay - low level with a Beggar's Guild, mid-level with a Thieves Guild, and high level with my Assassin's Lair (posted above).

Here's one of the maps for my Thieves Guild, actually this map is for the street level buildings above the guild area itself. I'm trying a new-ish style with a light touch of the pen and softer color palatte then much of my stuff.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Fathead - praise is always welcome!

Here's a commission map, one of seven for Dog House Rulez and their D20 Old West Game, Sidewinder - Recoiled. This is for an adventure that will be published in February, 2010.

This is a regional map of a real life location - Zion Canyon, Utah. Enjoy!

Working on my entry for this year's One Page Dungeon Contest - the Necromancer's Lair. Since I'm only about half done, I thought I'd post one area of dungeon map, I call, the Boneyard. This was an idea I thought about before, but shot down because of the amount of work involved. Oh well, I decided to go for out and spent the better part of four hours hand-drawing, then scanned, imported to Xara Xtreme Pro 4.0 applying color, bevels, and drop shadows. It was a huge amount of work, but I'm satisfied with the results. I'll post the finished map here, probably in another day or two. (You'll enjoy the final, as the Bone Chapel is a sight to behold!)

Enjoy!

Here is my March Challenge Entry at the Cartographers' Guild. This contest is sponsered by Wolfgang Baur's Open Design Project. The winning map will be published in the Red Eye of Azathoth patron project, which will be available as a PDF product for public distribution. (Most ODP Patron projects are private and not made available to the public)

Apparently the Red Eye of Azathoth - is a Cthullu like adventure using Pathfinder RPG rules, the PCs are reincarnating investigators who are attempting to stop some greater dark power's influence over the Earth, by appearing at various dates throughout history - starting in 887 BC and every 200 years (?) until 1887. This Iwaizumi map is for 1287 in Japan. The Red Eye of Azathoth is supposed to be a red flaming comet and each passing of the Earth it deposits bad karma and must be prevented from destroying the world.

Finally, who ever wins this challenge will most likely be recruited as a staff mapper for Open Design Project - so its a big deal to win this challenge.

In the contest rules, no matter who wins the popular vote, the publisher reserves the right to select their own winner, should the popular winning entry, not match the desires of Wolfgang Baur. Even though I am currently winning by two votes, Wolfgang voted for my map yesterday (challenge voting is open, you can see who voted for you...) so it seems to be a done deal - more than likely my map will be the one published, no matter who really wins, though like I said, I am currently winning.

It would be great to join the staff at Open Design Project!

Been a while since I've posted, no maps to show, working on bunches, but they're protected by non-disclosure agreements, however, there's one new commission of note.

The president/owner of RPGNet contacted me today to create a series of maps for use in a grand experiment. They want to see what could be done using maps in Apple's new IPAD - so I get to be part of the cutting edge of cartographic development. That's kind of cool.

They plan on using it like a Virtual Tabletop app moving digital minis on an encounter scale tavern in four pieces sliced to 1024 x 768 pieces, then a larger map of the city itself of 8 slices, where the tavern is located within, then a regional map showing the city.

I've never even been to RPGNet, so its interesting that without knocking on their doors, they found me online and contacted me directly.

If anything comes of it, beyond a simple commission, I'll post an update!

99% of my maps are fantasy in one genre or another. That last 1% might consist of Sci-Fi maps and this the first one in a long time. This month's challenge at the Cartographers' Guild started late, so they asked for a minimal design, create a single room or space with no windows and doors, and some means of egress whether through a teleportation portal, or transporter unit. Can be any genre, fantasy, sci-fi...

Couple nights ago, I saw Avatar (the movie) for the first time, at a friends house in HD Blu-ray - awesome flick! Anyway, that inspired me to create a modern version of my Assassin's Lair map concept, I did last summer. This is using Avatar neural link technology for a Tri Star Federation, Bureau of Naval Intelligence black operative - assassination, spying, sabotage, suicide bombing (as the agent is not killed if the linked human/alien form is destroyed). Surrounding the uplink bed, outside a glass wall, is a section containing 5 alien lifeforms in cyrogenic pods along the wall.

Topside of map contains an armory and decontamination cell on the left, the transporter unit at center and the agent's stateroom to the right. This section is hidden within the Communications Array atop cruiser class, or bulk merchantmen starships, often included as a hidden deck on Diplomatic Corps ships in hostile starlanes.

In a sci-fi RPG, this could be a solo adventurer, as a member of the crew of a cruiser class ship with top secret status for transporter access to the Communications array, or this could be an NPC whose activities the PC party must stop - or even a party member could be the operative's selected assassination target... lots of story ideas in this map!

Actually its been many years (25?) since I've played Space Opera and Traveler, doing this map brought old memories with the inspirations of new movies.

Something cool!

The Cartographers' Guild (website dedicated to all things of fantasy mapping) is getting an Art Gallery showing in NYC in July.

July 16 - 29, at Soho Gallery of Digital Art, NYC is hosting an Art Show of fantasy maps.

For the month of July, the CG is sponsoring a mapping challenge (contest) create a fantasy map in your own style using New York City as inspiration. The top thirty entries will be available as its own Art Show for the first two weeks of September at the Soho Gallery of Digital Art.

So the Guild is getting two art shows this summer. I have 3 - 5 pieces in the first show, and shooting for the winning map for the second shows.

Don't see that everyday!

Working on a PF compatable Iron Age Celtic setting intended for publication next year. Using a Western Europe analog, as a comparative timeline to real world history, this is roughly 600 BC to 100 BC, mostly pre-Roman setting with Mycenaean/Etruscan, as well as Dane/Saxon analog cultures. Made all kinds of small modifications, restricted several classes, and created one new class, though all classes will get flavor differences, or minor alternate spellcasting abilities, etc. I've alos restricted most races to fey type, and a few other monsters with only humans and half-fey blooded humans for PC races.

Anyway, I didn't need a map, yet, but I was doing to see one for some inspiration. Although I plan to include analog Celtiberians, Gauls, Britons, Picts and Gaels, this map is for my Ireland (Hibernia) analog, I call the Isle of Hybreni. The Celtic names on the map are mostly Celtic sounding, rather than true Gaelic, though some are real Celtic words or word parts.

I'm still early in development, but moving right along. Although my current publication works-in-progress are either imprints under another publisher, and a 3 way partnership setup. I think I'm might try to develop this Celtic setting solo!

Enjoy!

Haven't made a map since July, as I've been busy developing a couple of publication projects, but I managed to squeeze in time to do this month's mapping challenge at the Cartographers' Guild - map a Castle was the subject. Rather than doing a floor by floor plan of a complicated castle I decided to continue with my illustration style overview map for this. This is a fantasy castle that was the birthplace of one of my PCs in the last 3.5 Epic game that ended earlier this year...

Like the others, I created a 3D model of the castle and used as a reference for hand-drawing, scanned, and colored in Xara Xtreme Pro.

Enjoy!

OK, this one is not my artwork, rather Alex Tooth, a UK illustrator that I commissioned for a Fey Portal piece.

Development on this a slowed while I get ready for greenlight of the second Kaidan publication, my Japanese Ghost Story setting - its a patronage project and there's 4 days before the budget has to be acquired. As far as I know its not there yet, so I'm in anxiety over that. Once Kaidan gets greenlighted, I'll be busy doing final redevelopment for release early next year.

After which I'll focus on the Iron Age Celtic setting (though got the starters for another...)

Enjoy!

Until midnight on Monday, Bronze Patronages are on sale, regularly $24.99, but for the next few days is only $19.99 - if you ever wanted to participate in the development of a setting and mini-adventure arc for professional release this is your opportunity.

Kaidan is a dark fantasy realm inspired by feudal Japanese history, culture, relgion, mythology and ghost stories. It is the first RPG intended for a new Asian Horror genre. Please join us and help make this possible.

I've got three more maps to create for my first adventure of Kaidan: The Gift - Curse of the Golden Spear (renamed first adventure).

I'm working on one right now called the Pool of Dead Children, but named the Pool Campsite on the map, so GM's can show the map to players without spoiling what the encounter is about, which is udsing the new Haunt mechanic from the Pathfinder Game Mastery Guide.

The map below, I did last night for an encounter between the PC party with their entourage of merchant carts, carriers and the merchant they are escorting to Kaidan versus the Hebi-no-onna (snake armed woman yokai). They have to cross a small river across a wooden bridge that's 40' across. The center span (between the posts) of 20' is set to collapse once 300 pounds is sitting on it. This will force the party to collect lost items, save anyone fallen into the river below, and finding some other way to cross - even fix the bridge as a possibility. To add to the excitement, a lost salt-water crocodile has found a home in the river below awaiting for meat to fall to its dining table.

As always, this is my preferred hand-drawn style, digitally scanned, detailed, colored and composited in Xara Xtreme Pro...

Note: though this is all rights reserved, you can still look!

Enjoy!

Here's the final map for my first adventure for Kaidan. This is the assault on the Town of Agoya. The PC party will be resting here following a harrowing journey through a dangerous mountain pass, having been inundated by ambushes organized by a Hebi-no-onna (snake armed oni woman). She has arranged for a large attacking force of 0 level bandits (nobushi) led by a bandit at an equal level to the PCs. While the town militia will be fighting as well, the PCs will have to lead the counterstrike to win the day.

The following is a view of the entire town, showing the GM the strategy being taken by the attacking bandit force. Note: label numbers correspond to the adventure, thus there is no legend to show what they are in this map.

As always, hand-drawn linework onto 18" x 24" paper, digitally scanned and finished in Xara Xtreme.

Enjoy!

The mini-arc is finally complete, I'm finishing the layout for Adventure 2, and will do Adventure 3 page layout this week. The three Kaidan adventures: The Gift: Curse of the Golden Spear 1, Dim Spirit: Curse of the Golden Spear 2, and Dark Path: Curse of the Golden Spear 3 will be released as a print/PDF by Cubicle Seven. Release dates are June 9th for The Gift, July 9th for Dim Spirit and August 9th for Dark Path. Each adventure contains many, many maps, the adventure, new monsters, monster templates, feats, classes, archetypes, the reincarnation rules, honor rules, 4 pre-gen characters and enough setting information to whet your appetite and to run the adventures.

Each adventure is a full color printed book slightly under 60 pages, with adventure and appendixes. Cover art by Jan Pospisil (for adventures 1 and 2), Jason Rainville is cover artist for Dark Path, monster illustrations by Mark Hyzer, all other illustrations are mine, as well as the maps. Jonathan McAnulty of Kobold Quarterly is author/lead designer, Dave Paul is editor, Steve Russell of Rite Publisher is publisher (as an imprint). I am concept creator, layout artist, developer, cartographer, illustrator and art director.

Pre-orders are available at:
Cubicle Seven | Amazon.com

You can also order them through your local bookstore or LGS, as it is in Alliance database with ISBN. Its also available at Barnes&Nobles, and major bookstores in AU and UK.

There is a PDF booklet, In the Company of Kappa, that is a complete PC monster race for this turtle-like goblin of Japanese folklore: IC intro, a full 20 level racial paragon class, 3 racial base class archetypes, feats, weapons and magic items. We plan to offer a similar book for Hengeyokai and Tengu. Following this we are creating class/faction books in a similar vein: Yakuza, Samurai, Shinobi, Shogunate, as well as 30 Ancestral Relics (something like Weapons of Legacy for Kaidan) and possible a monster book later in the year.

Jonathan McAnulty will be running two different one-shot convention games for Kaidan at Origins. The Frozen Wind and the Tolling of Tears are the names of the adventures.

I'm really excited this is finally in realization! I can't wait to hold the adventures in my hands. In the beginning I figured this would be a PDF download only - to see it on Amazon.com or ordered through my game store is way beyond expectations!

Well it seems my work on Kaidan has got me noticed. I am working on a map and the gazetteer for the last adventure of the Jade Regent AP for Paizo Publishing! I will be including at least one ghostly (Kaidan-like) encounter in that gazetteer.
