Why the boost to D8 for the War Hammer

Post by Weisenwolf »

I assume the DCC War Hammer has morphed from the oversized claw hammer of the D&D world to an oversized Lump Hammer hence the change to D8 but does anyone know the reason for that decision?

Because it's awesome? Now the warhammer is popular again. All the dwarves are throwing away their longswords, as they should, and even the Lawful clerics can do 1d8 damage now (considering that Chaotic clerics get all the bad-ass weaponry, the d8 warhammer balances it out a little).

I get the effect on the game but that would have to be one big hammer!

My more pressing question is, "Why does a Warhammer have the same gold cost as a Mace?"

Outside of concepts such as availability, there doesn't seem to be much of a crunchy reason to use the latter.

Well, there could be cultural differences from place to place, for example, that means some regions have maces but not hammers, and vice versa. If you're into such things.

If you assume that the "equipment list" is what's available in every town, everywhere, you give up a chance for some world-building in exchange for convenience.

Either is correct if it is what fits the game you want to play.

Indeed, for the fluffy aspect, this is a complete non-issue.

It would be silly to imagine those items are available everywhere at any time.

And also to presume the costs are uniformly stable across the setting strains credibility.

Still, if we're bothering to have prices listed at all, then we should simply use them as a guideline... a starting point. Which caused me to scratch my head a bit at the "crunchy" (rather than "fluffy") intent.

Simple enough to modify and move on, I suppose. :)
