Artifact checks

Post by daddystabz »

When making an artifact check it basically states in the rulebook that you have to make the check 3 times...takes 3 rounds.....or is it saying you make it once to use it one time and again over the course of the next 2 rounds to understand it? I am a bit confused.

How does this work in detail, please?

Also, it talks about fumbling an artifact check roll. If you do so, which fumble table do you have to roll on?

Lastly, I see that Tech Levels exist in the game. Is there a chart anywhere that explains what each Tech Level represents?

The artifact check roll is actually 3 turns(30 minutes). You take 3 turns then make a artifact check roll. The roll is D20+INT modifier+ any class bonus+ a +1 for anyone assisting the roller up to a max of +4(note: only characters with a INT of 13+ can assist and they only give a +1 so only 4 characters total can help) then you subtract the complexity modifier(CM). You can burn luck to help on roll too. Then you look at the artifact check table 7-1(Page 168 or on the GM screen too) and see what happens. If you roll a natural 1 (call it a fumble if you want) then there is no modifiers nor can you burn luck. You then use the roll of 1 on the artifact check table which can be really bad. There is a combat artifact check as well. If you are in combat and want to try and make a artifact check roll then you must take 1 round. You then must burn 1 point of luck. After that you make a artifact check roll with no modifiers at all except luck can be burned with this roll. Good luck.

The tech level (TL) and complexity modifier (CM) can be found on some of the artifact of the ancient ones list. On the table 1-1: ability score modifiers you will find the Max Tech Levels. So a character with a 10 INT is limited to artifact check rolls on TL 3 or lower.

So lets say a level 1 Sentinel finds a gauzer pistol. He has a 13 INT so can try a check on artifacts of TL 4 or lower and he has a +1 to roll. The sentinel then takes 3 turns then rolls a D20+1 (INT), a +(D3+2 for class), then a +1 for his buddy helping him who has a INT of 13, then subtracts CM of 3 for the pistol. Lets say he rolls a 9+1(INT)+(D3 gets a 2 then a +2 as well for a total of 4)+1 (assist from buddy)-3 CM for a total of 12. You cross reference on artifact check table and get: Artifact activates for one use; but operation still not understood. You could burn 2 luck to get to next reference or 5 to get to a roll that he can understand artifact with no check and use it at will. Hope this helps.
