First PBP Funnel of 2020: The Gig at the Wizard's Tower

Slowly the patchwork group of poor villagers and peasants file down the narrow stone corridor into the massive lecture hall. They marvel at the size of the room--the largest they have ever been in--and some shrink at the echoing sound of scuffling feet. They have traveled from scattered towns, hamlets, and farmsteads across the county to this, the Tower of the Manticore; the most infamous (and yet mysterious) school of the arcane and occult arts in the word... or at least, the only one anyone has ever heard of 'round here. Some came for promises of wealth, others from wanderlust and boredom, but all came in response to an open call to all toshers, sewer hunters, rat-catchers, and otherwise healthy and willing folk promising bright gold to those who would help to exterminate the arcane horrors that crawl the catacombs beneath the cyclopean structure. Suddenly, a hush falls over the group, as two robed figures, one tall and one squat, make their way to a podium at the front of the hall, and begin to speak.
Abandon heroics all ye who enter here- this be a 0-level funnel PBP. We are starting 2020 with an excellent and detailed free funnel adventure bwhich can be had for free in the 1st volume of the 2019 Gongfarmer's Almanac:

Original Post:
Crawlers-

Greetings! I see you all lurking around here waiting for somebody to post something interesting. Well, I would be happy to liven things up by providing you a grisly death! Who wants to participate in the first PBP of 2020 on the GG forums?

I'm willing to judge a quick crawl through one of the free Gongfarmers' funnels, or another free funnel someone suggests (I don't want to spoil someone's IP that is for sale). I run the game basically from the book for funnels without any house rules.

If you're interested post here. I think I can handle up to 6 players. If we get 3+ I'll reach out to y'all separately and we'll make the actual thread.

I'm up for that. I've been wanting to do one, but have felt I can't commit right now to running one, so this is perfect.

Ok, two volunteers so far. If I get 3 we can play. Anyone?

I'd be interested if I had the time to commit! What are you thinking of for timing? Specific date & time or expected frequency?

As judge I'd commit myself to an update at least once a day and I'd attempt to actively resolve any moves put in between about 5pm and 10pm EST. For players I'm flexible because there are zero more exciting games out there.

If neither of you has read the GFA19 funnel "The Gig at the Wizard's Tower" I was thinking of running that one because it allows some flexibility in timing. If you have, I could find another GFA one, or roll up a random Metal Gods funnel.

I've barely cracked the covers of my GFA 2019s, so that would be a great choice, IMO.

Also, yeah, I think most play-by-posts aim for 1 post per day, and maybe one across a weekend.

I'll be running my GMG booth at a Con next weekend, so I may not be able to post between Thursday and Monday...

I've also enabled "quick reply" for this topic, so you don't have to leave the page to make a new post (easier to reference what's going on when you're composing a post).

And I will throw it out there that you can click on the wrench icon toward the top of the page and subscribe to this topic, getting an e-mail to your account e-mail address whenever there's a new post on this topic. Makes another way to know if there's an update already, or not, without visiting the site.

I can likely do one post per day. No promises though. :)

Hello! I'm new here, but I figure this is a hell of a way to start. Keen to play if you're still looking for someone! :)

I'm in NZ (NZT / GMT+13) but I figure that shouldn't be too much of an issue with PBP?

Thanks guys. I threw a post up on reddit advertising as well and got a few more interested crawlers so I'll wait until everyone is set up on the GG forums, then PM everybody who's playing. GnomeBoy and Vort, y'all can go ahead and roll up four zeros apeice if you want. For zeros I make declaring alignment and gender optional, and everything else is standard rolling. You can post em here now if you want to or wait til we're ready to start.

Hah, true! I've only run funnels, this will be my first as a player. :) But you're right; when the damage is 3d6, 4hp just isn't that many...

Don't worry, your weakest characters will be the ones that make it, it seems to be the way of DCC!

Quick question, are we rolling for equipment as well? Or only stats?

Re: Players wanted: High time for a new PBP

by GnomeBoy
I used Purple Sorcerer, but the pencil-and-paper, by-the-book method is fine, too. If by 'rolling for equipment' you mean a random roll on the equipment chart, that's standard, so I'm going to say do it. You can then spend your randomly determined cp on more equipment, as is standard.

Judge Y: "For zeros I make declaring alignment and gender optional, and everything else is standard rolling."

Yep, please roll for your equipment per the rules, or using purple sorcerer. You can add them in by editing your post, and keep that post as your running char sheet if you want. I'll try and edit the first post and title of this thread tonight to reflect that we're starting and give y'all your intro. The adventure is called "the gig at the wizard's tower."

My sorry sack of adventurers.

Updated sheet -- I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with a herding dog, but I guess we'll find out. Maybe it will outlive everyone!

Maybe Darryl just got his heavies to do the work for him in the past-- or that spider bite has done its work on him!

Ok, with four players we're ready to start! I will put flavor text/story in quote blocks and any visible rolls/adjudication in bold.
The taller one begins in a surprisingly high pitched voice:

"Welcome, mighty heroes, to the Tower of the Manticore! By official order of the Conclave of Seven-and-One, we have gathered your eminences, the boldest of the bold, to protect this peaceful place against the lurking horrors of--"

The shorter one cuts in-

"Oh, cut the crap Zser! You know these aren't heroes, they're just the slum trash and bumpkins we hired to clean out the basement. The sooner we get this done the sooner I can get back to work on my---"

"Ahem! Well then, on with it, I suppose. I am Zser-Zerad the Somewhat Knowledgeable, and along with my esteemed colleague Biliac the Impatient here, we will be supervising your work today. We have several minor infestations of vermin in the catacombs below the tower that we have contracted you all to deal with for us. Payment will be rendered upon completion, at a rate of one gold per kilogram of heads of dead vermin, as weighed by us. Er, kilogram- that's a standard measurement we use here, equivalent roughly to the weight of a bottle of wine.

At any rate, as is our custom, we are willing to take a few brief questions before we swear you in, on our most holy artifact, the Sword of Æder-Kadai-"
-he gestures to a massive two-handed claymore hanging above him-
"-and then lower you into the sub-basement to begin your work."

"Questions, Zser, really? These hicks couldn't even form a coherent sentence if their lives depended on it. What a waste of time..."
Any questions before you go in? I'll allow two per player, which I will answer in my next post and then send you in. You can also take a closer look at the mages or anything in the room if you like, in the meantime.

Benedict Beatletongue - "What makes this abomination of a holy relic so important to the likes of you? It pales in comparison to the relics in our house of worship!"

Wiola Copperpence - "I'll be damned if I go into some stinking rat-infested hole without a plan for getting out! ...how're we supposed to get back out?"

General - Are there any specific markings on the mages wardrobe or faces that we would be unfamiliar with?

(I'm super excited to get started!)

Sally Longshanks (flicking a flea off her sleeve): "What can ye tell us about the nature of the beasties down below?"

Beezel Scribbler: "Yes, yes, good thinking my friend. If we can identify which of said creatures weighs the most--specifically, which heads are of weighty volume--then we should target those first." (To the robed figures) "I assume a copy of our employment conditions will be made available? I wish to send a copy to my employer, Plumbum and Plumbum, should anything untoward happen to myself or my party. Furthermore, I assume if we leave the relevant details with you, our families will be notified of any unfortunate demise?"
