The Ruins of Ramat - 0-level funnel

Post by Judge Perky »

It is mid-spring, the time when the land's rulers and their men-at-arms go to war with their neighbors. Nearly every able person is already involved in such conflicts, or helping the remaining militia protect the local village.

A little girl comes running and crying into the center of the village. When questioned, she sobs that she and her dog were playing just outside of town, by Rose Hill, when a giant, clawed creature came up out of the ground and took her dog. The girl is completely terrified and her dog, which never normally leaves her side, is nowhere to be seen.

You and your companions volunteer to investigate.

I used the plain text option, then copy/pasted. 5 pcs was the minimum. Should I pick one to leave? I quite like the Jester, so I'd like to play him and whatever others you'll allow :D

Good idea, easier to cut and paste! Let's give it a day or two to see how many others join. We should have 8-12 zeros for this adventure.

Oh, and these poor suckers need NAMES! :-)

While we're waiting for the rest of your characters and names to be posted...

You grab your meagre trade implements to use as rough weapons, and rush over to Rose Hill. This little hill is only about 30' high and around 90' in diameter. Near the top of the hill, you find an opening in the ground that is about 10' across... displaying a blackness of interminable depth.

Rawlins, gong-farmer by day but alchemist by night, hears of this tale and thinks of the opportunity for research. Jester Jenkins, dressed for work, follows him and the others, hoping for a laugh.

"This hill... seems to remind me of a mound. Look how conical it is, so unlike natural soil erosion and flow. This is, I think, a barrow, where men once placed their final excrement to rest. Unwise to venture into the dark, blind, wandering outside of the familiar; man was not meant for this, else he would not memorizzze the path to his lavatory. And so, delving once more into the pile, I shall, like the midnight-wanderer drawn to his hole, seek to bring with me... light!"

Rawlins looks to produce a flame, such as using a torch or somesuch.

"So... why'd you bring the bag of 'gong'?" Jenkins frowns, wrinkling his nose.

"Have you a light? No? Then we'll have need of one. Nightsoil is precious cargo for my research, but it has a thousand uses. You'll see... once we have a torch!"

Marvin the Taxcollector holds up his lantern. "I thought to bring a flame. You'll need more torches."

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But since wheat has been scarce, and the livestock have been fed a high concentration of soybeans this season, this batch does burn like pitch yes.

Ragged Rob, Squire Jon, La La Farfoot, Farmer Karl and Lyanna huddle together in front of the hole in the ground. At the mention of light, the group mutters amongst itself. Finally, Farmer Karl steps forward and declares, "I have a chicken!"
"Two chickens . . ." Lyanna mutters.
"Two! We have two chickens!" Farmer Karl amends.
La La Farfoot whispers something.
"Two and a half! We have two and a half chickens!" Farmer Karl says proudly.

What do you do now?

Ragged Rob approaches Rawlings.
"Perhaps we could use my crutches, combined with your night soil and Marvin's fire, as the basis for torches?" He glances around at his fellow villagers, many of whom had tossed him a coin or two on the streets. "Errr . . . my legs are feelin' much better!" He takes a deep breath. "Must be this country air!"

OOC: Hah, love that.

IC: Rawlins nods, and the tax collector hacks the crutches up to make torches. (he also smirks, the begger having evaded taxes for disability. Shock! Horror!)

"We'll still need cloth. Have we rags we can use? A cloak perhaps?"

OOC: I'm thinking my other characters can contribute the hem of a cloak or something. Smear them in highly-flamable nightsoil, and he have torches?

The hole beckons.

OOC (nudge): So are you lot going to go after that poor doggie, or is this just going to be a torch crafting expedition? ;-)

OOC: Can't it be both?

Ragged Rob hands Farmer Karl one of the makeshift torches and slaps him on the back.
"Good luck, friend!" he says cheerily.
Farmer Karl glances at Rob, then at the hole, and then shrugs.
"Reckon we should get movin'," he mutters and steps into the hole. Squire Jon follows close behind, then La La, Lyanna, and finally the newly mobile Ragged Rob.

As the first group descends into the hole, Squire Jon turns to the young halfling woman behind him and says, "So what's a beautiful chicken butcher like yourself doing in place like this?"

Honest John has a lantern. Perhaps we could mount it on Ned Starch's pitchfork and take a look into the hole?

Actually, if you look a few posts up, Farmer Karl, Squire Jon, La La, Lyanna, Ragged Rob have already started going in, using pieces of crutches with burning nightsoil as torches.

Max and fire, do your characters join them or do they stay outside?

Seems to be some confusion on how this play-by-post thing works. Here are some guidelines:

It's like an in person game, but instead you just interact by posting on the forum. As the Judge, I lay out what you see, and then you post how each player reacts, roll dice, etc. Then I come back and tell you the results. Here's how someone else described it:
POSTING EXPECTATIONS & HOW TO DO THIS

I trust you to roll your own dice.

Interact with each other all you like. Sometimes you will have to wait to interact with me.

I don't expect anyone to post more often than I do. If you get on even once every three days, that's fine.

In the case of combat, it is best if you state what you intend to do, then give rolls for Init, attack rolls, and damage. Feel free to roll crits and fumbles if you should be fortunate or less so. Then I can narrate the combat round efficiently.
