Well, I guess there's always the Luck roll to see who gets hit...

Let's go up. Moving about one step a second, listening for any sound, looking upward, obviously.

Thorin and Fosco likewise head up the stairs. Also looking and listening for any creatures that might try to attack the party.

ooc... they follow after Chendriss & Darrow. So more in the middle of party.

The party shuffles up the steps slowly. At the top of the stone steps, the people in front find themselves in a small hallway that stretches to the easy and west. Directly in front, to the north, is a metal door, with the same strange panel to the side of the handle. To the left (west), the hallway ends after about ten feet, and there's a door on the south wall, just like the one in front of you. To the right, the hallway goes about ten feet, and there's two doors, one on the east wall, one on the south, and the hallway hooks to the north. You think you hear some noises from behind the doors to the east. All of the doors here are the same: metal, with the strange metal "button" / panel to the side of the handle.

Part of the party should head to the north of the two east doors, and the rest take position to the west of those doors -- that way, if something jumps out, we maximize our ability to whack it back into it's room, and use the doorway to our advantage.

Flavia and Chendriss will move to just around the north bend.

Darrow will prepare to listen at the door and get ready to fall back and/or open it (depending on what's heard) and fall back. "Falling back" means letting frontliners move in front of him...

Hector sticks with Orastes.

Let's wait for as many responders as possible...

"Sounds good to me." Thorin says with a darken tone. "Fosco and I will guard the rear of the party and face the door to the west."

Jack and Sexton Abraham will also go to the eastern door, unless others direct them elsewhere.

Cathbad hangs back.

Darrow listens to the door with the noise. If they both have noise (or it's not clear which the noise came from), he listens to both, south door first.

[beer, if you want a roll of something, his stats are in my sig and I don't mind you rolling for me.]

Darrow hears some strange noises coming from behind the doors: the sound of movement, swooshing, skittering, heavy bellows-like sounds, and weird clucking and chirping and clicking.

Then there's a pulse, a strange, powerful surge in the air, and the hiss of steam, and all the doors open at once.

To the south, Darrow sees a large room filled with what look like nest boxes for chickens, except much larger, and these contain egg-like things, like were in the room below. Two (!) of the giant insect creatures are inside, and were apparently throwing blankets or old tapestries on top of the nest boxes.

To the east, you see a large room that's been obviously repaired and refurbished. Inside stands a the man from before, grim faced and holding a coppery rod that is glowing brightly at first but quickly fading.

To the north, you see a room filled with shelves, and various objects, scrolls, books, papers, glassware, scales, and all sorts of furniture and stuff.

The door to the west (which goes south, where Thorin/Fosco are), opens onto a bare room, with an open window. Outside, the first light of dawn is beginning to lighten the sky from the east.

You may roll initiative.

Bad guys are on 18, so if you beat that, describe what you're doing... otherwise y'all can wait to react. :-)

After the doors open, the unknown man gestures with a flourish and speaks: "Pay with your lives now, you fools." He smirks and seems to expect something to happen, but when it doesn't, his expression changes somewhat... (Rolled a 3; Lost. Failure.)

The bear-bugs are not so ineffective. The first attacks Darrow while he's listening at the door. With one arm it slashes (20) out at his leg (3 on Crit table M), knocking him to the stone floor, for 5 damage. With the other it stabs downward (13), hard, for 6 damage, then pulls his lifeless body inside the egg chamber. (Sorry Darrow; you were going to get +4 on your saving throw v. that spell, but there's no rolls for you to make this round against being attacked. !)

The second bear-bug moves out into the hallway and screams in their weird, shrill voice: "Help! Help! Help!" It attacks Jack, striking out with one claw (19) and hitting, for 3 damage. After he falls, it strikes out at Sexton Abraham, but misses (1) and somehow loses its balance a bit, before quickly recovering (-2 to next attack).

In the hallway, Abraham, Bypeld, Chendris, and Flavia are adjacent to the bear-bug that now stands over the body of Jack Nimble. The others are behind Bypeld and Abraham, in the direction of the stairs or, in the case of Thorin / Fosco, by the door to the other room.

Your moves?

Well, seeing that they are kind of blocked in and will have a difficult time advancing forward they take a fast peek through the open west door?

The room is kind of long and narrow, and there's an open window on the far (south) side. It's completely bare, so far as you can tell from here (without going inside and looking around the corner, it's not square, it has a sort of hallway part on this side, to account for the stairs that you just came up).

Thorin will lite up his last burning flask of oil and he will toss it into the room and at the human figure. If not able to do this than he toss it into the room with those funky eggs :)

Fosco will just stand and wait till he can replace any fallen party members.
