I know it doesn't technically qualify as a movie, but I feel HBO's Game of Thrones clearly fits the bill. Complex characters, some dark magic at work, loose morals, I would imagine that Mr. Gygax would happily of included George RR Martin's novels in his list.

A big +1 to these:
fantastic planet
dark crystal
solomon kane
And some others to add to the mix:

nausausica and the valley of the wind (strange things from the murky and monstrous past)

Spartacus(1960)

Omega Man starring Charlton Heston

Adventure Time(TV Show) - you just have to watch to understand.

The Sampo* aka The Day the Earth Froze - 1959 Russian/Finnish production - Most of the movie on Youtube
And check out this bad ass painting called Defense of the Sampo. This film contains some of the best names: Lemminkainen - the hero / Annikki - the damsel in distress

*This film was shown on MST3K. I'm an obsessed MST3K fan.

Watched Conan: the Destroyer last night (my birthday). It was actually quite a bit better than I remembered. Yeah the effects are a bit cheesy here and there, but it held up well. The story was good. And I liked the portrayal of Conan as kinda dumb, not a John Galt-type ubermensch, just a big beefy, superstitious thief.

"American Astronaut" by Cory McAbee is a very interesting film; set in space but very Appendix N.

Saw Heavy Metal last weekend. Highly recommended, it's a good mix of fantasy, sci-fi and gonzo.

I have both GOR and its sequal on video tape. Fell asleep watching last time I tried it years ago and I was never motivated enough to get to the sequel movie. Heck, I'm not even sure if I have a working tape player any more.

The concept of GOR (both in book and movie form) is a good one, but the reality of GOR is not so well done. I like the struggle between the Kur and Priest-Kings. I like a lot of the general action. The slavery thing is clearly overdone, and Norman's writing style leaves a lot to be desired. (I don't need page-long paragraphs telling me about some bird that Tarl happens to see along the way.) If they could ever "clean up" the series it has the potential to be a classic.

A few of my own favs:
The Raven (1963) Peter Lorre, Vincent Price and Boris Karloff!
The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (1967) Christopher Lee!
The Archer: The Fugitive from the Empire (1981) Perfect serpent men portrayed.
Hundra (1983) A female Conan.

And oddly enough, many spaghetti westerns:
Cut-Throats Nine (1972) Brutal.
Shoot the Living and Pray for the Dead (1971) Klaus Kinski!
The Five Man Army (1969) They get the party together at the beginning of the film.

Always something about gold in these films.

Maybe I missed it on the read through, so apologies if that's the case, but Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi's "Fire and Ice" was pretty good when I saw it as a teenager ... no idea if it holds up.

The Goonies.

Cavern exploring.... Traps... Treasure... Each "adventurer" brings a different skill set to the group (the girl can play the trapped organ; the inventor kid can spray "effects" to slow the bad guys...).

They are nothing but a bunch of dungeon delvers who survived the funnel...

How did Gor turn out? Now for the REAL challange. I dare you to try and get through Lucio Fulchi's Conquest. I made it on my fifth try and I watched it on every level of chemical consciousness.

I rather liked the Momoa Conan. I actually thought he was more Conan than Arnold because he was more intelligent and was a leader of men, much like the literary Conan. I mean really Arnold had mabye 20 lines in Conan the Barbarian and although the original was a better directed movie I think Khal Drogo played a much better Conan.

Also really like John Carter and a little disappointed that we will not see another movie because of poor marketing.

John Carter was fantastic. Great movie that is very underrated.

The biggest sin with the recent Conan is that it is pretty forgettable. I cant really remember it at all, except a vague recollection of liking Momoa.

Conquest Definitely Appendix N! One of my favorites.

While lacking magic, I have friends that gained inspiration from the first and second of the Blackadder series. Lots of fun those.

...searching this thread for Sunday morning movie to watch. Chose 'Equinox' - bizarre!

Thought I'd add a couple of my own.

'Fearless Vampire Killers' and 'What we do in the shadows' are cool (not necessarily appendix N) for vampire gaming inspiration! ...but the real beauty, much like 'The Goonies' but darker is 'The Gate' for their efforts in summoning and banishing demonic entities!!

Oh, and if you haven't managed to see it yet, 'Zapped' for the time travelling antics of an Englishman stuck in a medieval setting.

Ladyhawke! Dug this up from 2013 upthread, 8 years ago, almost to the day.

I recall really liking that movie, mostly because of Rutger and Michelle. I still have the VHS.

Well, if we're reviving the thread...

Excalibur (classic)
Krull (early Liam Neeson!)
Beastmaster (of course)

And why not? :)

This is essentially an evergreen topic - there are always new people rediscovering the literature.

And if you really like Grimdark:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Valley_(film)

and Rutger Hauer again:
Flesh and Blood https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_and ... 1985_film)

I'd even like to add a brand new entrant:
The Witcher https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witcher_(TV_series)
