Excellent review -- I think I'll be showing this to my group, to bolster their interest.


Just to nitpick for a moment, this...

...sort of sounds like the spell fails. Clearly (to me) it's that only a few opponents (out of many) are NOT burned to a crisp, but someone with no familiarity of these rules might be confused...

Great review.

I especially agree with your last paragraph on how the randomness of the game actually encourages player's creative choices. I believe that some of the more negative feedback has been dismissive of the randomness, rather than appreciating the opportunities that the randomness can bring for strategy, creativity, and storytelling flavor.
