"...a few quite fresh...."
My players may have an opportunity to encounter corpses accumulated over hundreds of years. The time it takes to search they could have random encounters. Any suggestions for tools or products to generate what it is they find, loot-wise?

If your campaign has an above average economy (or had in the past when most of the bodies found their way to the location) then a quick multiplier for the average money. Weapons and armor will likely be ruined by the passage of time and the rust/rot resulting for the bodily fluids of the victims.
Enchanted items and inlaid gem stones are the most likely source of value in a pile of dead adventurers. This would make portability easier but they'd have to dig through the bodies to find it all (2-3 minutes per body on the pile) and depending on the state of decomposition you get the option of giving them some sort of cooties

Random encounters
Disease
Vermin bursting forth from the bloated corpse they were searching
Negative reactions from anyone they meet after from the gawdzawful stench that clings to their clothes and equipment.

Carrion crawlers, ghouls, and other scavengers compete with looters, as well as natural scavengers such as bears, wolves, etc. Add rot grubs to taste. Forget not the restless dead themselves who may be tied to their former possessions

If we're talking mostly bones, I made a creature that was called "sleeping skeletons" which were animated skeletons that had gotten so old the bones no longer held together, but were still animated...kleefaj wrote:... opportunity to encounter corpses accumulated over hundreds of years...
