Max spell level

Post by Dagonazrael »

What does the max spell level on p.18 mean and how does it interact with wizard and elf class max spell levels. Are the levels on p. 18 the maximum level cap on spells that the wizard can learn ever, or are they the maximum level of the additional spells known at level one?

In any case, if I have Int 18, when can I learn a levl 6 spell, given that the wizard table only goes up to level 5?

Max spell level refers to the highest level of spell that the character is capable of casting - meaning that if your Intellience or Personality lists a max spell level of 3rd, then your Wizard will only ever be able to cast spells of up to 3rd level even if he makes it to 7th and higher levels where he would normally have higher level spells.

Your class level also limits what level of spells you are able to use (1st & 2nd level wizards only get 1st level spells, 3rd & 4th level wizards get 1st & 2nd level spells, and so on).

As for when someone with an 18 in their spellcasting ability score can learn a 6th level spell... best guess is 11th level, as that continues the established pattern of a spell levels beyond 1st being accessible at a character level of (spell level x2)-1
