Dungeon Crawl Classics, The Cold Lake Campaign, began at The Yellow King, in Colorado Springs, this Sunday 5/19/19.
In probably the worst funnel ever written all the characters survived. The Festival of Butterflies is held every Summer during the strawberry harvest in the town of Marksburg. Marksburg sits on the edge of Cold Lake and at the foot of the Lowly Mountains. Our oddball cast had all made their way into town during the Festival to take part in the Fair and the feast held at the town center.
Nestor the farmer had a very good week wining first prize in the Fair with his prize hen with which he had won 3 gold pieces. Petal the halfling trader had done very well for herself during the fair making a number of good trades. Diggy the Dwarven miner had come to town simply to get drunk and forget about the mine for a while. Baldrick the indentured servant was at the festival waiting on his master hand and foot. Alfred the lawyer sat in his office working on a legal case he had first thing Monday morning. The second story office he rented overlooked the city center where he could see the Festivals comings and goings. Stacy the cutpurse had been working the townsfolk making their pockets lighter. A good haul would give her plenty of coin for weeks to come. Marcus the mercenary had finished his last contract and had come to town looking for more work and besides the ale was always good in Marksburg. Saladin the wizards apprentice had stopped to grab a bite to eat after having gotten some material components for his master.
Suddenly from overhead came a rush of wind as 4 giant butterflies fluttered down from the sky. A torrent of glittering choking material rained down onto the crowd from the wings of the butterflies. Diggy, Baldrick, Stacy, and Saladin were all knocked unconscious by the choking material but made their saving throws. Alfred was safe in his office. Petal was inside the vendors hall making a deal. Marcus and Nestor were both unaffected by the Butterflies.
Nestor feeling lucky from having won first prize with his hen decided to attack the butterfly nearest him with his pitchfork. Running up behind it he struck true but for only minimal damage. The damn thing was tougher than it looked. Markus the daring mercenary immediately charged the nearest Butterfly and sliced it in two with a natural 20. Nestor was bitten on the arm by the butterfly he attacked but lived. He then thrust his pitchfork into it with a killing blow but was pinned beneath it as it fell down on him. Stacy awoke from being knocked out and ran to the church for help but the priests saw what was happening and began to lock the doors shut. Stacy demanded their help but they declared they were helping those within the church. Stacy turned to see Nestor killing his opponent but being caught beneath it. She and Alfred both ran to free the trapped farmer.
Diggy awoke and charged after the Butterfly nearest him with his trusty pick he had brought with him all the way to town for some reason. Saladin was useless and couldn’t seem to wake up from the material that dusted off the butterflies. Petal took advantage of the commotion and decided to take a closer look at what all the other vendors had brought with them. They were all clustered at the large double doors of the vendors hall looking at the terror being wrought in the courtyard before them. Petal made a couple of fine discoveries before being caught by an alert vendor. He screamed for help, “help thief” he cried, but a quick witted Petal simply demonstrated that she was helping pack up the belongings of the vendors who had left them out and unattended.
By this time most of the townsfolk had been knocked unconscious by the butterflies but some soldiers had managed to take down one of the butterflies after losing four of their own. With only two butterflies left Markus ran to help the soldiers with the one they had surrounded. Diggy drove his pick into the mouth of the butterfly in front of him as he was about to face certain death. Markus was grievously wounded in helping the soldiers but succeeded in cheating death. In the weirdest moment of the day, Saladin rose from beneath the table he had collapsed under, and threw his dagger into the head of the last butterfly and bringing it down for good.
Luckily for Baldrick his master had choked to death on whatever the butterflies had rained down upon the crowd. His indentured servitude was up as the man holding his contract was dead with no known kin.
Next week the Unknown 8 pick classes and decide what to do with themselves in the aftermath of such trauma.
