Thieves World

Post by Blood Axe »

I was looking through my shelf of books and came across several of Robert Asprin- Thieves World books. The setting seems like it would make a great campaign, like the Lankhmar setting.
To defend: This is the Pact.
But when life loses its value,
and is taken for naught -
then the Pact is to Avenge.

There've been 2 treatments of Sanctuary and the Thieve's world setting.

Green Ronin did the latest of them (couple of hardbacks and a module IIRC) that provide a pretty in depth look at the city and it's inhabitants. You can still purchase these in PDF format. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php ... o=&x=0&y=0

Chaosium did the original in 1981 with a boxed set. It's pretty lightweight and doesn't cover the amount of history that the later GR set did as their were fewer stories to work with. You can still find these on Ebay now and then but they are not available at any of the PDF websites.

I prefer the earlier work since it gives you a lot of room to grow the NPCs and leaves a lot of things unanswered (i.e.there's a map of the main sewer lines but not much other detail for it).

If you enjoy the gritty feeling of Sanctuary you should check out the Black Company series by Glen Cook. Green Ronin also did a setting book for these but I'm only seeing the physical copy available through retail https://greenroninstore.com/products/th ... ratch-dent or

I have both the Green Ronin d20 stuff and the Chaosium stuff (the box, plus some of the FASA adventures). The Chaosium set is great and one of my most prized gaming possessions. A perfect blend of just enough detail, it's stat-ed for multiple systems, has great maps, it's easy to reference during play and it really captures the tone and feeling of the first few anthologies, before TW kind of went off the rails (for me at least).

There was a pdf floating around on the interwebz somewhere awhile back that might be worth tracking down, but the boxed-sets have gotten ridiculously expensive on E-bay from what I just looked at, but you can get lucky like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/THIEVES-WORLD-A ... 2847973200 (at least for the next hour or two).
