Is ddc for me?
Hi everybody,
While searching out some old school games to play I came across the ddc rules. Right now I am considering ddc or LL.
Just have a few questions to see if they would be for what I have planned.
Basically looking for a lighter rpg to dungeon crawl with. I used to play dnd and adnd and wfrp waaay back in the day.
There would only be a few of use playing, mostly dungeon crawling, not as much rpging. We would be using minis and some 3d terrain I've been building.
Was just wondering if the game would be good for random dungeons, not as much judging, more hack and slash take the gold and level up.
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks
Jason

Re: Is ddc for me?
DCC is for everyone. It's the perfect mesh of OD&D, Moldvay Basic, and d20/3.x.
Re: Is ddc for me?
I've run dungeon-crawl type campaigns using LL and then DCC with the same group: LL with "Barrowmaze" and DCC with "Palace of the Silver Princess" (and we've since moved on to "Castle Amber"). They do prefer the DCC system. It was a little more working teaching them the DCC rules, but I introduced the uniquely DCC systems gradually over several sessions, and it wasn't so bad. It would be easy to mix-and-match between systems; before we switched from LL to DCC I had introduced deed dice and luck points into the LL campaign, and in our DCC campaign we still use the LL initiative rules (though with d20 initiative rolls).

Re: Is ddc for me?
I sincerely like both games. But LL is a much simpler game, probly better for those with little to no rpg experience. Its also free to download.

Thanks for all the replys
I have downloaded LL, but was looking for something just alittle different.
Most of the players have tried, and liked Warhammer quest. I like certain aspects, but it never really wait I was after.
I have looked at 4e as well, but it was way to much "stuff".
I think I'll just have to get the ddc rulebook, if not just for the read and all the artwork. It's always hard to resist a new ruleset

Re: Is ddc for me?
I am currently running DCC and have recently ran LL (well, actually B/X but same difference).
I love both.
My players love DCC more.
One player I have, isn't a massive fan of old school D&D. He was and still is a massive fan of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (before the latest Fantasy Flight version). He is really enjoying DCC. I am just running the Goodman Games modules and we are all enjoying them.
We are all grizzled and seasoned players. DCC is something fresh and fun.

I was a WFRP GM for 15+ years. I switched over to DCC last year & I didn't find any increase in difficulty level. DCC & WFRP are similar in a lot of ways.

Whfrp is a neat game. The Career Compendium is now print on demand. It was once selling for $100 to $125. Now its $30 or $40.

Re: Is ddc for me?
I started running DCC late last year and my initial first choice was going to be Labyrinth Lord as well. I still love LL but I'm glad I made the switch. My group consists of 5 mid-to late 30's guys and my 10yr old daughter. Everyone LOVES DCC.
The guys are veterans of D&D from 1st to 3.5 and 4th edition. My daughter has played Moldvay and Lab Lord. Everybody picked up DCC easily and the guys all like the subtle differences to the game. Nobody has had an issue with the Race as Class thing either. In the last couple of games the Played with a Wizard has realized how AWESOME they are. He said he hated wizards before but now he is very excited to use magic!
Also, the group loves to play Zero funnel adventures, and they keep asking me to run another funnel just for the fun of it.

Well, if you like D&D and WFRP, then you might find DCC to your liking. It has a D&D core, but also lots of funky things that you have in WFRP, including corruption, brutal criticals, luck points (kind of like fate/fortune points, but not that almighty).
Vorpal Mace: a humble rpg blog with some DCC-related stuff.

Re: Is ddc for me?
DCC RPG is awesome for Warriors, and the magic is fun and dangerous. I finally have a reason to play a warrior and not suck compared to a caster.

Labyrinth Lord.
Worth looking into. Lots of material easily converted to DCC.

Re: Is ddc for me?
Yep, LL is a great game with a lot of great support materials. It's basically a clone of the old Moldvay edition Basic/Expert set rules (plus an optional Advanced Edition Companion volume that adds all the cool stuff in from AD&D-style play, without adding in all the finicky extra rules many of us ignored), but has a number of fantastic modules and settings for it that could easily be filched from for DCC games. For example, there's the wonderful two-volume Barrowmaze megadungeon, the gonzo and weird Anomalous Subsurface Environment setting/megadungeon (currently standing at two volumes with more on the way), the fantastic Red Tide setting and accompanying volumes by the inestimable Kevin Crawford, the first volume of Michael Curtis' Stonehell megadungeon (a perfect example of packing a LOT into very little space book-wise), the excellent Lovecraftian Fantasy Realms of Crawling Chaos supplement (worth the price of admission for the random artifact creation tables even if you didn't want Cthulhuesque critters, races, etc. too), ad nauseum.
The great thing about the various OSR retro-clones and neo-clones is that at least 90% of the material from any of them is interchangable and usable between systems, often with little tweaking. I've got DCC, LL+AEC, Adventurer Conqueror King System, and Astonishing Swords & Sorcerers of Hyperborea, and a slew of supplements and modules for all of them (as well as modules and supplements for OSRIC and Swords & Wizardry too). It's simply a smorgasbord of lovely material ripe for plucking, using, and hybridizing.

Re: Is ddc for me?
I think that DCC is a great game for pretty much anyone. The core system isn't hard and the basic options are pretty standard fantasy-genre types. The artwork is outstanding and the modules are much better than standard RPG modules.
One neat thing about DCC is that you can play by the letter of the rules or tweak them in a modular manner in order to fit your style. For example, I don't like "mercurial magic" much so I don't bother. Is it "by the book" DCC? I guess not, but it works fine for my group. What I'm trying to say is that you can start with DCC and just ignore any parts that don't like. If the charts and tables vex you, just use a constant effect instead.
