Just how old are you by the way ?... Nahhhhh that's not the right question.

So here is the REAL question:
When did you first play in a bona fide role-playing game ?

Summer... '95 or so... picked up the revised AD&D 2nd edition books and taught myself and some others how to play having never really heard of such a thing as a table-top RPG before then (just the Final Fantasy video games and others in the genre).

...I've played all the older editions though, mostly because I've played every game I could get my grabby little hands on just to see what it was like.

First game that was played where the Dm had done more than just look at the pictures was AD&D1e at my school friends house run by his dad. He was an amazing Dm.

I started playing in 1977 but I didn't play at Gary's house bring only fourteen and living in the UK!

I was introduced to the game by guys at the local war games club. The local war games shops, Miniature Figurines sold their own fantasy figures and the White Box set

I really started to get into it around '86 or so. Discovered the Elmore and Easley Dragon covers (get to meet Elmore every year at GenCon now, have him hit on my sister, and own SO much stuff from him)... and never looked back.

Young enough to "could have fallen" into 3rd Ed. But old enough to appreciate the nostalgia of Menzter. Which also means unfortunately also old enough to throw up on the 4th Ed. so called "Red Box". *puke*

Irony is that I hardly play D&D anymore even though I grew up on it, my last purchase was the 1st printing of 3rd Ed. Players Handbook when it came out. I think they've lost their connection with their true die-hard fans imho.

89! Red Box, but voted AD&D, since that was just out when I started, didn't play it for a couple years though.

1983ish. I think I was ten.
I didn't know there was a difference between red box and AD&D, and I also didn't care.

Early 80's for me with the Moldvay boxed set.

The day after Christmas, 1975. My friend got a copy of the OD&D boxed set and hadn't even finished reading the whole thing when we decided to set up a game and give it a try. It helped that we already were familar with Chainmail and wargames, so many of the terms made sense to us.

I'm pertty sure we messed some stuff up, but we had a blast. Oh, and not at Gary's house. Not that time.

1992 I think. A friend of mine showed me a book on the bus and it captivated me. I have absolutely no idea what book it was, but I went out and bought the 2nd edition books right away (it was definitely not them).

I guess I should answer my poll too:

Picked up the D&D red box in 1982 and never stopped DMing still!
It helped a lot when I learned English along the way, I still remember when I understood that a "shield" was an actual piece of equipment, not just a "magic spell"!!

Started with Red Box in '83. I was 10.

I answered the poll "in the 21st century", but now that I think about it, that seems wrong. I met this kid (who later became a good friend) in 7th grade and we would talk about video games. Eventually, he brought up D&D and I was intrigued. This must have been in 1998.

Anyway, he brought the 3rd edition books over one night and I rolled up a Rogue. I remember infiltrating a castle to steal a ruby. The next day, he handed me the DMG and said, "Your turn."

Started with the Rulescyclopedia, which was 2e times. THAC0!

My uncle handed down the Holmes Basic and all of his first edition AD&D hardbacks to me in 1980.

I started in 1982 with AD&D when I was in graduate school.

1983 Moldvay edition. Palace of the Silver Princess.

1978/7th Grade - Holmes Blue Box. Quickly Mashed in AD&D...Moved to AD&D fully within about 18 months....

1979, 1st day of my freshman year at high school; the kid seated next to me in class had a AD&D1E Monster Manual. I asked if I could see it (having no idea what it was, just that it looked cool and I wanted to know more) and he was nice enough to let me. I've been hooked ever since.

Good grief guys, exact same thing here, down to dates and grade. I remember I was in the library at school, and I overheard a friend talking about what I later learned was a Rod of Lordly Might. Something electric went off in my head, and I knew I had to learn more...

1982. I was a freshman in high school. AD&D

Oddly enough my first exposure to rpgs was Gamma World. Not D&D. My brothers and I were in to AH & SPI games as teens. The local game shop had a copy of Gamma World shelved along side Squad Leader, luftwaffe and Panzer Leader. My older brother mistook it for some kind of PA squad level game. When we got home and opened it. We didn't know what to make of it. I tried running it once- and it was set aside. That was around 78 maybe?

A couple years later, another gamer in my class saw I was reading the Fellowship, and asked me if I had heard of D&D. The rest - for better or worse - historry, as they say.

I'm not that much older than you... I might still count as a "youngun", especially thanks to Coleston the Cavalier being a freshman in high school a couple years before my birth.
