I found a neat Blog entry giving a review of DCC. I wasn't sure where to put it, but it seemed like it would be cool to have a thread that had a list of Blogs and reviews for the game.

Here's my review, though obviously you guys know I like the game. I'm gonna try to post play reports and homebrew stuff as it emerges.

Thanks for the game!

Thanks.

I've read quite a bit more than when I posted that, and my opinion has only improved.

One might imagine that reading items like spell results tables would be a bit....boring....in an RPG book, but that is definitely not the case here. The more I read, the more I find myself wanting not only to play, but to run, this game. And that is a fantastically good feeling to get from a game product.

I am still uncertain what a persistent campaign model (as opposed to episodic play) would look like with these rules, but I am no longer certain that this is a problem. Certainly, there will be a great deal of spontaneity, unexpected happenings, and fun.

I'll be posting some more to my blog when I've finished reading the book cover-to-cover, and again when I've had a chance to run the full rules using Barrowmaze as a testing ground.

I've been in Campaigns and episodic RPG sessions. I think the people I play with like having adventures (episodic) with other things like building forts and stuff on the side. These days I don't have time to make the next epic Dragonlance style campaign. I did read a blog comment somewhere that someone playtested this game and it reminded them of Paranoia (a game I love) and that they do not see this as a campaign RPG. I don't think that is fair unless you base it on the funnel which is only the beginning of this game. I think this game can work for my style of play for sure.

I ran the introductory adventure "The Portal under the Stars" last week. We had a blast. You can find my (brief) actual play review of DCC here.

Thank you for the review, Johann, and welcome to the forums!

My favorite part:
My players were shocked when the first casualty occurred after about five minutes of play and after a few more deaths, they really pulled together and started to think.

They largely neutralized the next couple of threats, got cocky, and lost a few more characters. In the end, 5 of 16 made it to the secret treasure chamber where intra-party conflict took another two lives.
... and wow. Those Trinity articles are impressive.

As for the continuing blogroll, there are some great new posts up:

Crowking has authored a very in-depth analysis of the 0 to 1st level transition here

http://ravencrowking.blogspot.ca/2012/0 ... ngeon.html

And Caveman / Neradia has a new post up:

http://neradia.blogspot.com/2012/04/huz ... ssics.html

I'm impressed with the thought and depth that goes into these articles. Thank you!

What does it say? I don't read Italian? Oh, never mind, it's Spanish and I google translated it...

My D&D blog has been DCC RPG-centric since the Beta, and some of that stuff is being re-written for Crawl!

Speaking of, there was a meme on the blogophere and google+ about on 80's "zine"-ing your blog. I did just that here, if you want to check it out: http://dakdm.straycouches.com/an-osr-zine-meme

I warn you, though, it's not very interesting.

Oh dear ... that is going to get painful. I was just digging through our old didactic zines ... but smoke 'em if you got em!

I'll post some TINs up on Choose Death later today.

Oh ... I get it. We aren't actually posting old zines. Whew. That could have been embarrassing.

Heh, I seriously doubt anything you've written is going to be embarrassing... as for me, one my players (Count Spatula) wants me to dig up all my old D&D notebooks and pictures, everything, and do an art show with the stuff (she's a pretty established local artist) and... err, no way man... though I am curious to see the stuff. Hell, I wouldn't share anything I did in College (my art sucked and the reason I dropped out and got into computers instead.)

I was test piloting http://www.box.com to share PDFs, and they include an "embed" option to share PDFs along with downloading/sharing. http://www.issuu.com allows you to share PDFs by embeding them too. I'm sure there are others.

Incredibly thorough review, Daniel! Thank you!

The GoT drinking game is brilliant ... as long as you don't have to work the next day. These are the ones that would kill me:
  • You get two characters mixed up. (Bonus drink if you have no idea who the character is but it is clear you should)
  • A character on the show drinks.
  • A character is betrayed.
Yikes.

I've been running a DCC campaign for several months, started up not of after the demo first hit. I've been detailing new monsters and subsystems I've implemented in my game, as well a campaign log. I'm just starting to switch everything over the full rules, it's a fun process.
