What is the reduction of the arcane check penalty for mithril armor?

I don't think there is. It jut doesn't burn elves.

It seems they forgot to add that to the chart. Also it should be "Arcane" not "Spell".

I actually think the iron thing is needless complication. What happens to elves locked in iron manacles? Why doesn't a normal iron sword cause more damage to the elf?

Here's how you could houserule it - so you're attacking an elf and hit with a sword that does 1d8 damage. You roll 2d8, taking the highest die as the damage done.

or better still: elves who take wounds from iron weapons roll on a lower die size to hit the next round, as they find the wounds hinder them. Maybe iron-manacled elves take no damage but cannot cast magic.
