Being 100% honest...how "system-transparent" is this product?

I no longer support 4th edition in any way, but I do support 1) Goodman Games and 2) crime in my fantasy game.

Can I port over the essentials to 3.x/Pathfinder/DCC RPG...?

Ogre,

It is Mrs. Stroh's birthday tonight, but I'll put together a page analysis for you tomorrow.

Hey, man, don't get in trouble with the wife! Take your time. :D

Doesn't need to be extensive--I just want to be sure I can buy this book without getting "4th edition taint" on me.

Esteemed Coves, Bravos and Maunders,

The best analysis is thumbing through the book at your local brick & mortar and seeing if it is something that might inspire you as a DM. Much of the meat is system neutral, but there are also a LOT of 4e stats provided. (Answering every DM’s burning question: How many hp does that harlot have, anyway?)

Page count wise we are looking at:

2 -16, Intro and mob mechanics. System-neutral.

17 - 21, Crime mechanics. 3.x - 4e bias. You would need to be comfortable with the concept of a target DC.

22 - 29, Stats for thief-takers of all sorts. 4e.

30 - 38, “Random” events. System-neutral.

39 - 40, Mob war mechanics. 4e.

41 - 50, Campaign seeds. System-neutral.

51 - 70, Adventure seeds for the 3 tiers. 4e stats.

71 - 78, Made men, stats for mob NPCs. 4e.

79 - 82, Vulgar Tongue, a thieves’ cant dictionary. System-neutral.

83 - 90, Slum geomorphs. System-neutral.

91 - 92, Neighborhood generator. System-neutral.

93 - 94, Crime Templates, Boon generator, mob record sheets. System-neutral.

So, certainly not 100% system transparent.

However, if stats are the hurdle, I’d be happy to write up a conversion for the DCC RPG. (It helps that it would take, tops, an afternoon.) I need to finish off the next two adventures but after that I could take a little time to make the conversion doc.

pfft -- A couple saves and you're cured. No big whoop.

Also, even though I have no outlet for using this book for the next year or so, (seeing the breakdown on what's in it) I'm getting more and more interested!

This looks very good! When will we get it in the UK?

Or is there a PDF now?

Cheers

No, sir. With all due respect to you, my friend Gnomie, I will never embrace 4th edition. I tried--for two long years I tried repeatedly--to love those rules, but I can't.

Anybody wanna buy some gently used 4th edition rule books? [/thread derail]

Rich,

Thank you for your interest!

Joseph sent the book to print a couple weeks ago. Then it is off to distributors and stores. Around the time the book hits the shelves he'll make the pdf available.

Understood (with a crazier amount of emphasis than the forum code will allow).

...But you're not better now??? I was sure you had a higher Con than that, Ogre...

I shook off the 4th edition dominate person effect and seem to be rapidly recovering. As part of my therapy, I play lots of 3.5/Pathfinder/Trailblazer in an attempt to bring me 'back from the brink' as it were.

Now, let's see....where was that Cthulhu mythos tome I was reading...?

GM: Ponders actually thumbing though Crime Pays rulebook. "Okay. Roll dice."
Player: "I got a 14!"
GM: "You're dead. Want to play again?"

The above represents my own DCC RPG conversion. Took me about a minute and you wanted to spend an afternoon on this? What, you get paid by the hour? :P

But which die? Was that a d14? d16? These things take time!

All of them die, of course. TPK!

Oh ... that kind of die. Clearly I hadn't thought through the entire design process.

LOL...love the "DCC RPG conversion" and dice conversation. :)

Crime Pays just shipped from the printer...with distributor transit times and such, it will hit stores early April. I will post an exact date once we have the book in the warehouse and some distributor orders on hand.
